What were you doing when the rainstorm came?

Good morning, dear judges.

I’m No.2 candidate.Today my topic is “What were you doing when the rainstorm came?”It’s my great honor to present my teaching plan here. My teaching plan consists of 7 parts.

Part 1 Analysis of teaching material

The lesson is a passage from Section B, Unit 5, Book B of PEP Grade 8. The topic is “Do you remember what you were doing?” It mainly talks past events and unforgettable things. Such a topic is closely related to students’daily life and will surely arouse students’learning interests.

Part 2 Teaching aims

I set three teaching aims according to the New Curriculum Standard.

1.Knowledge & skills

Students can master the new words: shocked, silence; new phrases: take down, at first.

Students can master the new sentence patterns.

2.Process & methods

Students can talk about past events and tell a story.

3.Emotion, attitude & values

Students can cherish and love the life.

Part 3 Teaching key and difficult points

Key points: usage of past progressive tense and conjunctions when and while.

Difficult points: How to talk about past events and tell a story.

Part 4 Analysis of students

Students in Junior High School have strong curiosity and thirst for knowledge, so I will try

my best to enrich the knowledge they want. Still they can’t express themselves fluently, so I will design different tasks for them to use the language.

Part 5 Teaching methods and learning methods

In this class, I will mainly adopt Task-based teaching method and Communicative Approach. The aim is to improve students’ enthusiasm and teach them to learn to play and play to learn. Students will use Autonomous learning method and Cooperative learning method. The aim is to make students active in class.

Part 6 Teaching procedures

Step 1 Lead-in

I will show students a video clip of Trump running for American president and ask them what they were doing when Trump was elected president of USA. The purpose is to improve students’ enthusiasm and lead in the topic.

Step 2 Pre-reading

I will let students have a free talk about important events in American history and then look at the title and the pictures to predict what the passage talks about. The purpose is to create a relaxing learning atmosphere and facilitate students’ learning of the passage.

Step 3 While-reading

In this step I design three activities.

Activity 1 Skimming: I will ask students to skim the passage and try to find out the main idea of each paragraph.

Activity 2 Scanning: I will ask students to scan the passage and complete the chart. Activity 3 Careful-reading: I will ask students to read the passage carefully and answer these questions:

1. What was Kate doing when the 911 attacks happened?

2. What was Robert doing when Martin Luther King was killed?

In this step students’ reading comprehension abilities will be improved.

Step 4 Post-reading

I will ask students to form groups of 4 and do a survey about what they were doing when Germany won the championship of 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Through discussion, students’ critical thinking and cooperative learning abilities will enhanced.

Step 5 Summary and Homework

I will ask students to summarize what we have learnt and I will make supplements saying that we should cherish the peaceful life because it’s very precious.

I will ask students to write a composition about what you were doing when Wenchuan earthquake happened.

The purpose is to check if students have mastered what we have learnt and cultivate students’ independent learning abilities.

Part 7 Blackboard Design

The blackboard design should be clear, concise and in good order.
