Chapter One Introduction

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1Overall Statement of Thesis

The literary work Jane Eyre has many descriptions of characters’ inner feelings, the author often use metaphors to reflect the characters’ inner feelings. In this novel, feelings or emotion metaphors play a very important role in understanding the characteristic of the characters in the novel and the development of plots. So how to deal with the descriptions of emotion in translation becomes the problem. Three representative Chinese versions of Jane Eyre (Song Zhaolin’s version, Huang Yuanshen’s version, and Wu Junxie’s version) are chosen as the corpus to study the translation of emotion descriptions.

Emotion is one of the most central and pervasive parts of human experience. Emotion is the feeling that is usually abstract, ambiguous or difficult to express. Therefore, In order to describe human’s emotions vividly, people usually use metaphors to express their inner feelings or their emotions. On this condition, there are emotion metaphors. The contemporary cognitive metaphor theory thinks that metaphor plays an important role during the process of emotional conceptualization (Lakoff&Johnson, 1980, pp.15-21). In this case, this paper tries to study the emotion metaphor translation from the perspective of cognitive metaphor theory. Comparing the differences and similarities of emotion metaphors in source language and target language, then analyzing and explaining the causes of the same and different expressions of emotion metaphors in these two languages.

After analysis and explanation the causes of similarities and differences in these two languages’ emotion metaphors, the next step is about how to translate emotion metaphors into target language. Emotions can be divided into natural emotions and social emotions, most natural emotions are pervasive among human beings. While social emotions are influenced by historic and cultural factors, they are usually different in separated nations. That is to say, after comparison and analysis, this proposal research finds out that there are the same and different expressions of emotion metaphors in English and Chinese. It is easy to deal with the same expression
