The Indian medicine man might have been more appropriately called a plant doctor. To the Indian, medicine was not so much a science as it was an art. Indian herb doctors would sometimes go to their graves without revealing their secrets of the healing powers of plants.

Medicine men often journeyed several days from their camps to search for soothing herbs and roots such as prickly ash, ginseng, pine gum and wintergreen. Care was always taken to make the proper sacrifices to the plant spirits.

Plants were never gathered carelessly or with haste. Ceremony preceded each harvest. Fires were built and tobacco was burned as sacrificial incense. A song was sung as each plant was gently pulled from the ground.

The herbs were prepared and stored with as much care as was taken when they were harvested. They were dried, cut and placed in special leather bags. Only certain Indians were allowed to handle the sacred medicines.

Unfortunately, some of the herbs had more magic in them than medicine. But many plants were effective in curing all kinds of ills. For example, boneset tea and prickly ash bark were prescribed for colds and fevers. Stomach troubles were often treated with wintergreen and slippery elm. Sassafras roots soothed the discomfort of mosquito bites. Fortunately for the early Indians, contagious diseases were almost nonexistent until the Europeans came to North America. 66.Another good title for the passage would be ____

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times to span the gap. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English… Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundre ds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often. He replied, “ Failure? I have no failures. Now I know 50,000 ways it won’t work.”

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?

Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking abo ut what your real goal may be. Think about this question, “ If I do succeed in this, where will is get me?”

This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win’em all”.

Why would an animal commit suicide? It seems a strange question, and yet it is one that has intrigued some people for a long time. For there is a kind of rodent, called the lemming, which periodically commits mass suicide, and no one knows just why!

These small creatures, which inhabit the Scandinavian mountains, sustain themselves on a diet of roots and moss, and live in nests they burrow underground. When their food supply is sufficiently large, the lemmings live a normal, undisturbed rodent life.

However, when the lemmings’ food supply becomes too low to support the population, a singular migration commences一一the lemmings leave their burrows on mass, forming huge hordes. Great numbers of the rodents begin a trek across the Scandinavian plains. The journey may last weeks. The lemmings devour everything in their path, continuing their destructive march until they reach the sea.

The reason for what follows remains an enigma for zoologists and naturalists. Upon reaching the coast, the lemmings do not stop. They swim by the thousands into the surf. They stay afloat for only a short time before they tire, sink and drown. Thousands upon thousands of the little animals die in this rush to the sea.

A common theory for this mass suicide is that the lemmings do not realize that the ocean in such a huge body of water. In their cross-country journey, the animals must traverse many small lakes. They may assume that the sea is just another such swimmable obstacle. But no final answer has been found to the mystery.

So his skill and his beautiful trees were famous everywhere. One day the farmer went into the town to visit his brother, and was surprised at the trees that grew quite well. "Look, my brother," said the gardener. "I will give you an apple tree, the best from my garden, and you, and your children, and your children's children will enjoy it." Then the gardener called his workmen and ordered them to take up the tree and carry it to his brother's farm. They did so, and the next morning the farmer began to wonder where he should plant it. "If I plant it on the hill," he said to himself, "the wind might catch it and shake down the delicious fruit before it is ripe. If I plant it close to the road, passersby will see it and take away the apples--but if I plant it too near the door of my house, my children may pick the fruit." So, after he had thought the matter over, he planted the tree behind his barn (谷仓). Time passed, but the tree had no fruit the first year, nor the second-then the farmer called his brother. When the gardener came, the farmer said angrily, "You have cheated me, and given me a useless tree instead of a fruitful one. This is the third year and still it brings out nothing but leaves! That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter (笑声)Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day," says Dr. Kataria. "Everyone is naturally good at laughing-it's the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives." There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over l,300 in the world. Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed-and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results! (1)The first Laughter Club was started in __________. A. India B. America C. Britain D. The first is the 173-meter-high Great Pyramid of Giza, the largest of all the pyramids in Egypt. The second is the Great Sphinx of Giza, a sculpture with the body of a lion and the head of a man, which stands 20 meters tall and 73 meters long. The origin of the Great Sphinx of Giza goes back 5,000 years, Although many sphinx sculptures have been found over the years, researchers believe that the Great Sphinx which guards the pyramids in Giza was actually the first one to be made (around 2600-2500B.C.). The head of the Sphinx represents Khafre, the Pharaoh who ruled Egypt at the time. About two thousand years later, around 570 B.C., sand had covered all but the head of the Great Sphinx. The people living in the area had forgotten the history of the statue, so they imagined that the head represented the sun god Ra and began worshiping it. The son of Pharaoh Amenhotep II heard the head speak to him in a dream. The Sphinx’s head made him promise to clear the sand from the statue’s body. The son, Thutmose, kept his word and did what he was told in the dream. He also built walls around the statue to prevent the sand from covering it again. After all of the sand was cleared away, Thutmose made a large stone tablet that told the story of his dream. He placed this tablet between the two front feet of the Sphinx, where it stands to this day. For hundreds of years, the Sphinx attracted people both as a religious monument and as a work of art. But eventually, the desert sand once again covered the Sphinx, leaving only

Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D.(分数:10.00) __________________________________________________________________________________________ 解析: The most thoroughly studied intellectuals in the history of the New World are the ministers and political leaders of seventeenth-century New England. According to the standard history of American philosophy, nowhere else in colonial America was So much importance attached to intellectual pursuits. According to many books and articles, New Englands leaders established the basic themes and preoccupations of an unfolding, dominant Puritan tradition in American intellectual life. To take this approach to the New Englanders normally mean to start with the Puritans theological innovations and their distinctive ideas about the church—important subjects that we may not neglect. But in keeping with our examination of southern intellectual life, we may consider the original Puritans as carriers of European culture, adjusting to New world circumstances. The New England colonies were the scenes of important episodes in the pursuit of widely understood ideals of civility and virtuosity. The early settlers of Massachusetts Bay included men of impressive education and influence in England. Besides the ninety or so learned ministers who came to Massachusetts churches in the decade after 1629, there were political leaders like John Winthrop, an educated gentleman, lawyer, and official of the Crown before he journeyed to Boston. These men wrote and published extensively, reaching both New World and Old World audiences, and giving New England an atmosphere of intellectual earnestness. We should not forget, however, that most New Englanders were less well educated. While few craftsmen or farmers, let alone dependents and servants, left literary compositions to be analyzed, it is obvious that their views were less fully intellectualized. Their thinking often had a traditional superstitious quality. A tailor named John Dane, who emigrated in the late 1630s, left an account of his reasons for leaving England that is filled with signs. Sexual confusion, economic frustrations, and religious hope—all came together in a decisive moment when he opened the Bible, told his father the first line he saw would settle his fate, and read the magical words: come out from among them, touch no unclean thing, and I will be your God and you shall be my people. One wonders what Dane thought of the careful sermons explaining the Bible that he heard in puritan churches. Meanwhile, many settles had slighter religious commitments than Dane s, as one clergyman learned in confronting folk along the coast who mocked that they had not come to the New world for religion. 作牵洠楡?湥?慷?潴挠瑡档映獩?尠(分数:10.00) (1).The author holds that in the seventeenth-century New England(分数:2.00) A.Puritan tradition dominated political life.
