The Chinese Lunar New Year of 2018 will fall on February the 16th. But there is a prelude(序幕) called the Laba Festival before the Spring Festival. It has been a long tradition that Chinese people eat Laba porridge and garlic to celebrate the event on this day. The festival is celebrated on the eighth day of December according to the traditional Chinese calendar.
Laba porridge is the most important dish for the Laba Festival. In general, it is made by rice, nuts, grains and dried fruit. The Laba Festival is used to respect our ancestors and gods and pray for the next year’s harvest. A folk tale said that Sakyamuni(释迦牟尼) once spent six years in learning Buddhidt doctrine(佛法) in a forest without eating anything. He was nearly hungery to death when a shepherdess went by and provided some porridge for him. Thanks to the generous shepherdess, sakyamuni recovered from the hunger and achieved enlightenment when he was 35. Therefore, the Laba Festival also makes people remember the day on which Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, reached enlightenment and became immortal(永恒的).

Yang Mingqi said she felt frustrated when she saw her score report last term. She used to be a top student.

Last year, a set of photos got millions of hits. It’s about freshmen at Peking Uni versity who looked at their mobile phones during a break after the military training, on Aug. 25, 2015. Chinese new college students are usually asked to take part in the military training which is a fundamental form of higher learning covering defense education. These photos revealed a fact that more and more teenagers are glued to cell phones in their free time.
Experts warn that overuse of cell phones could distract people’s attention and lead to a weakened cognitive ability called “digital dementia”, Yanzhao Evening News reports. Su Zhiwei, in Hebei Province, said heavy users of cell phones are more vulnerable to cervical spondylosis, failing eyesight, as well as poor performance in memory and writing according to his studies. A driving school in Hebei Province has opened reading zones to encourage students to put aside their cell phones during breaks to help keep their attention span during driving practice.
At the same time, Chongqing Technology and Business University has made it easy for students to read newspapers or magazines on campus and called on students to prevent from depending on handheld devices too much. “it’s time for us to pay more attention to our inner lives,” 27-year-old Wang Chong says, “Reading has become an important part of my life.” In the past year, many Chinese like Wang have spent money buying books ——both offline and online.
