Wesla Whitfield, a famous jazz singer, has a unique style and life story, so I decided to see one of her performances and interview her for my newspaper.

I went to a nightclub in New York and watched the stage lights go up. After the band played an introduction, Wesla Whitfield wheeled herself onstage in a wheelchair. As she sang, Whitfield's voice was so powerful and soulful that everyone in the room forgot the wheelchair was even there. At 57, Whitfield is small and pretty, humorous and modest. Raised in California, Whitfield began performing in public at age 18, when she took a job as a singing waitress at a pizza shop. After studying classical music in college, she moved to San Francisco and went on to sing with the San Francisco Opera Chorus.

Walking home from rehearsal (排练) at age 29, she was caught in a random shooting that left her unable to move her body from the waist down. I asked how she dealt with the realization that she'd never walk again, and she admitted that at the beginning she didn't want to face it. After a year of depression she tried to kill herself. We all，at one time or another，have pretended to be a rock star，singing and dancing along to our favorite song. Most of us have done this in the privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults，in the privacy of our homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! The thirteen homes he has built so far would fit better in an art museum than the residential streets of Huntsville, a conservative town of about 35,000 people.

Living in these houses is a bit like living in a roadside attraction. “Almost every day, somebody knocks on the door and says ‘Is there any way that we could see？’”said Edie Wells, an artist who rents a room in the Bone House. Her home features a stairway made of bones, floors covered in wine corks (软木塞) and beer bottle caps. Wells said visitors are most impressed when they see a bathroom with its walls, floor and ceiling entirely covered with broken mirror pieces.

In addition, each house is highly energy efficient with plenty insulation (隔热材料), an on-demand solar hot water heater and a system that can collect and recycle rainwater to clean the toilet and wash clothes.

Phillips founded Phoenix Commotion 12 years ago with the aim of creating a new model for sustainable housing. For as little as $ 10,000 it builds affordable homes for single parents, low-income families and artists.

Many cities in the world are benefiting from the night activities of a group of people who call themselves guerrilla (游击队) gardeners. Armed with trowels, spades and a van full of flowers and plants, guerrilla gardeners turn abandoned urban land into a blaze of color. In city centre locations where there was mud, weeds and empty plastic bottles, residents often wake up to find that the wasted area has been transformed overnight with brightly-colored bedding plants.

In most British cities, local governments and police turn a blind eye to the effort of the gardeners, whose activities are always carried out under cover of nightfall. And so far, there has been nothing but praise from the astonished and delighted local residents when they find their neighborhood transformed in such a striking fashion.

Not only do the guerrilla gardeners beautify neglected places, they also return regularly to water the plants and weed the flower beds. They also make sure that at least some of the plants they bring are evergreens, which means that the area doesn't look depressing in the winter months.

The first guerrilla gardener in London was Richard Reynolds, whose day job is at an advertising agency. Mr. Reynolds, a graduate of Oxford University, began his efforts two years ago when he moved to a flat in a tower block in South London. From his balcony, he could see several empty concrete pots, placed by the local governments to contain plants but never used. He went out after midnight and filled the pots with plants, and then planted more flowers in the path leading to the entrance to the block.

He then set up a website to explain his plan and called upon more gardeners to join him. Cash donations flooded in and, more importantly, volunteers rushed to be part of the campaign. Within six months, there were five hundred people in London prepared to come out at very short notice to restore neglected parts of the urban landscape. There are now unofficial but carefully-organized groups in many cities in Britain and North America and there is also a website where would-be urban gardeners can find out the location of the next expedition.

As the proverb goes/says, “Good habits benefit you all your life.” Indeed, a good habit is to me what water is to fish.

Entering the high school, I took delight in having fast food and ate too much. Consequently, I was so heavily overweight that I suffered a lot from my awkward appearance. What made matters worse was the fact that my classmates played jokes on me at times. From then on, I made up my mind to avoid snacks and meanwhile to take up jogging to lose weight. Owing to the timely changes, it was not long before I did succeed in creating my new image. Only then did I start to appreciate the significance of forming a good habit.

To be honest, the change in my habit means a lot to me, which contributes to my success as well as helps me regain confidence.
