Table manners in France

J: Hello, everyone!the TV program that you are choosing is channel V, welcome to our show—Talk About Yourself .you know ,different countries have different manners, so today, we are talking about the manners of the world.

J: Let’s welcome our members today-Peter,Tiantian,Angle and so on…

First of all, let’s talk about the manners in France.

hello,###,do you remember that we learned the manners in our English class? I still believe that table manners in France are strange. People have to eat anything with forks and knives. Could you please tell us more about the rules when we are eating meals in France?

M1: If you are invited to a French house for dinner, first of all , you have to be there on time. If you are even ten minutes late, you should call to explain. While eating , you should hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand. If you haven’t finished eating, cross your knife and fork on your plate with the fork over the knife.

J:ok. i think we should obey the rules. and if we want to go to our friend’ s home for dinner, what rules should we keep?

M1: you should send flowers on the morning of the day when you are invited so that they can be displayed that evening. You are supposed to dress well.

J: oh yes,I know a little French. I especially love flowers, and French people want to keep their house very beautiful. I want to know something we should pay attention to as well.

M1: Don’t begin eating until the hostess says “ bon appétit”.

You’re not supposed to put your bread on your plate you’re supposed to put it on the table. It’s rude to put your hands in your lap. You should keep your hands but not your elbows on the table. You should finish everything on your plate.

J: we have learnt the manners of France, and we know their manners are different from those in our country. If we don’t know them, we could make mistakes, for instance,we usually eat fruit without cutting first, but in France it is wrong, and we aren’t used to putting the food on the table.

Table manners in Britain

J: as we all know , Englishmen are very famous for their politeness. and ##,just tell us what you know.

M4: In Britain , if you go to a formal meal, you should keep the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right all the time. You

should eat with your mouth closed. You can’t let any of the food fall off the plate. You should use the knife only for cutting. You can’t take the food across the table. You shouldn’t scrape the plate. While eating , you should keep your elbows off the table. You should put your napkin on your lap. Remember never speak with your mouth full. You are supposed to cutlery from the outside to the inside.

Table manners in the USA

J:as we know, the USA is a relaxing place to have fun,but there have lots of manners or not?let’s listen to the ##,he will give us a great answer.

M5: Most Americans enjoy entertaining at home, but they don't enjoy formal dinners.

M6: Before arriving at your host's home, you may want to make sure of three things. First, be a few minutes late, about five to ten minutes if possible. Never be early, as the host may not have everything prepared yet. you shouldn’t be more than 20 minutes late ,either. Your host may begin to worry about whether you are able to attend the dinner or not.

J:oh yeah, may in westen countries ,people are used to inviting their friends to their home, but everyone should be a bit late.it means that you know the manners, but in easten countries it is very important to be on time,if you bring a gift to the host is best.

Could you please tell us what should we do if we are invited to our friends’house in the USA?

M5: , it is not necessary to bring a gift in most informal gatherings,.

If you like, you can bring some fruit or sweets, or, some flowers for the hostess. These are thoughtful gifts. Do not bring alcoholic beverages. Above all, do not spend a lot of money, and never give money. As we say in English, "It's the thought that counts you should wear comfortable clothing as well.

J: it is thought that counts, therefore, everyone should know what things the host needs, and when you are eatting food, maybe there are different rules from the following courtries, let’s listen to ## M6: Your host in his home will usually tell you where to sit. At formal gatherings, name cards are sometimes provided, or you will be told where to sit.

When you are having soup, make the least noises. And you mustn’t pick up your soup bowl so as to drink away the last drops of your soup.

If you don’t want any more food , you should say “no thank you ”to the hostess as she offers you more. At the table , make the least noises when you are eating. However , it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the persons next to you.

And smoking is not allowed at the table.

M5:When the meal is finished , the guests put their napkins on the table and stand up, the men should help the ladies with their chairs. J:Well, that’s all about manners in western countries. Now let’s get to know something different in Eastern countries.

Table manners in Korea

J: Korea is a country where people pay more attention to the traditions. Especially when you eat at the dinner table. For example , the elder people are supposed to start eating

M2: you shouldn’t eat too slow or too fast , you can’t lay down your chopsticks until the elders do it when you finish eating. J:I think it is very polite to the elders, we should learn from the Korean people. and what about the table manners in Kroea?

M2: You should have soup first . It is different from China that people are not allowed to pick up the bowl to eat. Don’t make sound while eating. Don’t let the spoon and chopsticks bump into the bowl to make any sound. Each person should have his

own individual dish, he is supposed to move some food from the

shared plates onto his own plate.

. After finishing eating, try to place all your dishes in the same way as they were at the start of the meal.

Table manners in Japan

J: all right. It seems that some manners in Korea and China are the same. What about in Japan?###

M3: In Japan, you say "itadakimasu" ("I gratefully receive") before starting to eat, and "gochisosama (deshita)" ("Thank you for the meal") after finishing the meal.

Blowing your nose in public, and especially at the table, is considered bad manner.

it is considered bad manner to burp.

it is pretty impolite if you stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl.

meals are traditionally held sitting on the tatami floor around a low table. Also during the tea ceremony and other traditional events, a person sits on the floor.

J:a-ha,only I know we should say kaidong in Japanese, the rules you said is important,I hear that there are so many rules when people eat .and please tell us the table manners in Japan.

M3: After finishing eating, try to place all your dishes in the same way as they were at the start of the meal.

When drinking alcoholic beverages, it is a Japanese custom to serve each other, rather than pouring the beverage into one's own glass. You are supposed to periodically check your friends' cups, and serve them more once their cups are getting empty. Likewise, if someone wants to serve you more alcohol, you should quickly empty your glass and hold it towards that person.

When you eat rice, Take the rice bowl into one hand and the chopsticks into the other and lift it towards your mouth while eating. Do not pour soya sauce over white, cooked rice.

Oh , that is very interesting.

Table manners in China

J:it is time to talk about manners in our countries ,don’t think you are a Chinese you know all the manners, but we have never tell a forigener what he should do .

M4: in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares. And sometimes the Chinese host use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or plate. This is the way to show politeness. You’d better eat whatever the host brings to you and say how yummy it is. If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say a polite thank you and leave the food there. Don't stick your chopsticks upright in

the rice bowl. Instead, put them on your dish. Make sure the spout of the teapot is not facing anyone. Don't tap on your bowl with your chopsticks.

J:Above all, today we have known plenty of manners in the world, and we should be careful in many English-spoken countries.when in Rome,do as the Romans do,after all!ok,today’s program is very successed, and see you next time.

Bye-bye!
