A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve, when Paul came out of his office, a boy was walking around the shining new car, admiring it.

“Is this your car, Mister?” he said.

Paul nodded, “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.”

The boy was astonished, “You mean your brother gave it to you, and it didn’t cost you anything?”

“Boy, I wish...” he hesitated.

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said jarred Paul all the way down his heels.

“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”

“Oh, yes. I’d love that.”

After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, and said, “Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?”

Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again.

“Would you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.

He ran up to the steps. Then in a little while, Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step and pointed to the car.

“There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day, I’m going to give you one just like it. Then you can see for yourself all the prettiest things in the windows that I have been trying to tell you about.”

At 9 am on Sept. 21, a fully loaded high-speed train left Beijing for Shanghai. Seconds later, when the screen showed the speed of 350 km/h, excited passengers held up their cameras and cellphones and took photos of it.

China’s new-generation high-speed train, the Fuxing, is now one of the fastest trains in the world, reported China Daily.

By the end of 2016, there were 2,595 high-speed trains running across China, which made up 60 percent of the world’s total high-speed trains, according to Xinhua News Agency. China has built more than 10 high-speed railways in Europe, Southeast Asia and South America, and is quickly becoming known as the leader of high-speed train technology.

Besides high-speed rail, China has improved people’s lives in many other innovat ive ways over the last decade.

Bike sharing, for example, is not new itself. But China has made it much more convenient and popular both in China and overseas. Leading Chinese bike-sharing firms Mobike and Ofo are now operating in foreign countries such as Singapore and Britain. Users in the countries were excited and posted photos of themselves riding the Chinese bikes on social media.

And back in China, if you’re riding your shared bike and stop to buy a bottle of water, don’t worry if you’ve forgotten your wallet. You could easily pay with your smartphone by scanning the seller’s QR code.

Cashless payment has grown into a lifestyle choice for Chinese people – even a street stall selling fruit has a QR code.

So what’s next for China? It seems that we still have many more great ideas to look forward to. As the country produced many graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in 2016, we can expect “lots of room for many more innovations to be birthed in China”, wrote the Financial T imes.

Almost one in seven of the world’s children live in risky areas with the most poisonous levels of outdoor air pollution, according to a UN report. Around 300 million children across the world have been detected in satellite imagery (图像) to be exposed to the severest outdoor pollution—six or more times higher than international guidelines suggested by World Health Organization.

The satellite imagery also confirms around two billion children live in areas where outdoor air pollution, caused by factors such as vehicle emissions, heavy use of fossil fuels, dust and burning of waste, is much severer than the standard set by WHO.

In China, the environmental protection authority released a study last month showing nearly one-third of the children have been threatened by potential risks from indoor air pollution. According to its findings, 26.8 percent of children in China are exposed to indoor air pollution attributable to solid fuels used for cooking or heating, 12.7 percent have no properly treated drinking water, 13.6 percent live in places where there are petroleum and other highly polluting factories within a radius (半径) of one kilometer, and 14.6 percent live in places where there are major highways within 50 meters.

Outdoor and indoor air pollution are directly linked to some deadly diseases that account for almost one in ten under-five deaths, which makes air pollution one of the leading dangers to children’s health.

UNICEF China is cooperating with the government to study the effects of environmental health on

children and will support the development of a Child Environmental Health Action Plan. “More needs to be done to protect children from the effects of air pollution, not only by governments, but by all of us. While reducing outdoor air pollution is the longer term goal, immediate steps can be taken to reduce indoor air pollution. Switching to clean fuels, ensuring air circulation, building energy efficient homes and schools, and stopping all cigarette smoking indoors are examples,” said Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative to China.

It includes airfare ($225), hotel ($170), dining out ($116) and dressing up ($95) and the gift. If you have weddings to attend this year, here are some tips for you to avoid breaking the bank. 1. Book flights in advance The moment you decide to attend a wedding is the time to check flight prices at the best time. Plane fares are higher in the summer, especially in July and August. Booking in advance will save you money, as will watch for sales on lower-cost carriers like JetBlue and Frontier. You can check Google Flights for a calendar of prices showing the cheapest days to fly from apps like Hopper to get real-time alerts when a fare is at its lowest price point. 2. Don't blow your budget on the gift If you've got the money, an expensive gift is lovely. But there's no need to take out loans to prove your love for the happy couple. Skip an expensive necklace by giving (an appropriate amount of) cash instead. To save on the gift, consider making one: A photo album or scrapbook of memories with the bride and groom shows how much you care. You could also share the gift with other guest(s) or even make gifts with DIY ideas by yourself to save money. 3. Use old dresses and suits You don't always have to be on a new dress for a wedding. While men have the option of repeating their suits, women are more likely to spend money on new clothes for the special occasion. But before you take out your wallet, consider reinventing something already in your
