II. Reading Comprehension

One silly question I simply cannot tolerate is “How do you feel?”Usually the question is asked of a man in action ----- a man walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He’ll probably say, “Fine, I’m all right.” But you have put a bug in his face, or in his walk, that he overlooked that morning. It makes him worrying a little. He looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, “How do you feel?”

Every question has its time and place. It’s perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask “How do you feel?” if you are visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train or sitting at his desk working, it’s no time to ask him that silly question.

When George Bernard Shaw, the famous British writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him, “How do you feel?” Shaw put him is his place. “When you reach my age,” he said, “either you feel all right or you are dead.”

1.According to the writer, greetings, such as “How do you feel?”____________.

3. George Bernard Shaw’s reply in this passage shows his ________.

A. silliness

B. cleverness

C. carelessness

D. politeness

4. “You have put a bug in his ear ”means that you have _________.

A. made him laugh

B. shown concern for him

C. made fun of him

D. given him some kind of warming

5. This passage can be entitled _________

A. Silly Question

B. Don’t Trouble a Busy Man

C. What Are Good Greetings

D. George Bernard Shaw’s Reply

More than 30000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year.

At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third floor window. Wearing a

seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half.

Therefore drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If

you do not, you could be fined up to£50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear

your belt. But it will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride

in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind.

However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collecting using a special vehicle; or if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before

you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember you may be taken to court for not doing so, and

you may be fined if you cannot prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it.

6.This text is taken from_________.

A. a medical magazine

B. a legal document

C. a police report

D. a government information booklet

7. Wearing a seat belt in a vehicle _________.

A. reduces road accidents by more than half

B. saves lives while driving at a speed up to 30 miles per hour.

C. reduces the death rate in traffic accidents

D. saves more than 15000 lives each year

8. It is the driver’s responsibility to ________.

A. make the front seat passenger wear a seat belt.

B. make the front seat children under 14 wear a seat belt

C. stop children riding in the front seat

D. wear a seat belt each time he drives

9. According to the text, which of the following people riding in the front doe not have to wear a seat belt?

A. Someone who is backing into a parking space.

B. Someone who is picking up the children from the local school.

C. Someone who is delivering invitation letters.

D. Someone who is under 14.

10. For some people, it may be better __________.

A. to wear a seat belt for health reasons

B. not to wear a seat belt for health reasons

C. to get valid medical certificate before wearing a seat belt

D. to pay a fine rather than wear a seat belt.

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876--1974) concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of a large number of people tend to e lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

11. According to this passage, your intelligence probably ________.

A. stays the same throughout the year.

B. varies from day to day

C. changes with the seasons

D. changes from year to year

12. Huntington based his conclusions on __________

A. records of changes in his own intelligence

B. work with peoples in different climates

C. records of temperature changes

D. all of the above

13. It seems that the cold of winter _________.

A. increases the ability to think

B. is the best time for thinking

C. is better for thinking than very warm weather

D. decreases the ability to think

14. One possible reason why spring is the best season for thinking is that _______.

A. all nature, including man, is growing then

B. it lasts longer than the other seasons

C. it is not too warm and not too cold

D. both B and C.

15. The two best seasons for thinking seem to be ________

A. spring and fall

B. winter and summer

C. summer and spring

D. fall and winter

When a family are traveling to the mountains or to the seaside, they can live in their motor home for a few days or weeks. 大学英语B阅读理解练习题及答案

Passage 1 Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the countr y. If one likes garden, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night. 1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city. B. All the people who work in London prefer to live in the country. C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London. D. Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside. 2. With the same money needed for ________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country. A. getting a small flat with a garden B. having a small flat with a garden C. renting a small flat without a garden D. buying a small flat without a garden 3. When the garden is in blossom, the one ________ has been rewarded. A. living in the country B. having spent time working in the garden. C. having a garden of his own. D. having been digging, planting and watering 4. People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that ________ if they had to live outside London. A. their life was meaningless B. their life was invaluable C. they didn’t deserve a happy life D. they were not worthy of their happy life 5. The underlined phrase “get away from” in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________. A. deal with B. do away with C. escape from D. prevent from 很多在伦敦工作的人喜欢住在伦敦郊外,然后每天乘火车、汽车和公交车去上班或上学。这也就意味着他们不得不早出晚归。
