Analysis on Fast Food Culture and Its Double-side Effects to the world from the Development of American Fast Food

Ⅰ. Introduction

Fast food is becoming more and more popular around the world these years. It is estimated that there are more than 100 branches of McDonald‘s and KFC only in Beijing. But the word ―fast food‖is very modern, fashion, and hard to be found in many dictionaries until 1955. Such a conception was introduced from foreign countries. The appearances of the fast-food arouse a new thing named ―fast-food culture‖, and also the debate about this culture by people.

In the current society, the fast food culture has already developed to be a kind of common culture which becomes a mainstream. Compare with dinner, the fast-food is a seasoning, a new current. As if eating becomes an burden while the speed of people‘s daily lives running faster and faster, thus the fast-food becomes very popular to the people who worked day and night.

Living in a so fast-paced life nearly almost no time to spare, it is obvious that people are paying little attention to the importance of have a healthy life .one of which is hygienic nutritious food. Burgers, pizza, fried stuff with cheese, French fries and all such food items which can be prepared and served quickly are named as fast-food and have a large group of consumers from all age groups. Fast food is basically on-the-go food, quickly made, and served within minutes for the people who lead fast-paced lives. Fast food joints and kiosks easy spots for people to either have their fast food or just get their take-away meals while on their way to work or go to school. Today, many people eat fast food instead of home made food. The reason is that fast food is fast, cheap and convenient. From the terms of age, not only the young people eat fast food, but also the middle-aged or some elderly; from a gender perspective, not only men eat fast food, but also women; from the class point of view, not only the poor, but also middle-level white-collar workers, as well as high-level officials. In a word, fast food is very popular for nearly all the people.

On the one hand, fast-food industry can not only improve the development of economic, but also provide jobs for people. It provides a large profit for the government. On the other hand, the emergence of fast food has a negative effect on the environment and human health. Because the French fries are fried by animal fat with high cholesterol, it ends to arouse fat and risk of cardiovascular disease. Since fast food has become a culture, it certainly influences the society and people‘s life. As analysis of this phenomenon can descry that the purpose of the U.S. fast-food production and supply system is pursuit of ―efficiency and profits‖, although the fast food operators and food suppliers have made a fortune, the environment, animals, workers, consumers have to pay a heavy price. People can only stand in the different position to do a description of the facts and in hoping that to look on the fast food and the fast food culture correctly.

Ⅱ. Brief history of American fast food

A. The Origin of Fast Food

One of the great pioneers of the fast food industry was a man named Carl Karcher. He was a farm boy who grew up in Ohio. At the age of 24, he moved to California, working at his uncle‘s factory.Like most Americans, he wanted to work hard and have a great life. In 1939, Carl wanted to go into business for himself a nd purchased a hot dog cart. He began his ―curb service‖ of selling hot dogs on the street to customers as they drove up in their cars. People did not want to have to get out of their cars to eat and so Carl‘s business flourished. Within five months after Carl bought the cart, he was able to buy a second one and continue his dream. Before long, he opened a drive-in restaurant call ed ―Carl‘s Drive-In Barbeque‖. At this same time, this new way of eating in one‘s car was becoming the biggest thing ever. It was considered really cool to go to a drive-in restaurant for a burger or hot dog. Waitresses known as ―carhops‖ usually dressed very attractively delivered the food to each car. For teenagers, this was the place to be especially for guys. And form then on, fast food became more and more popular.

B. Famous Brands of Fast Food

1. McDonald‘s

Jesse G. Kirby, the founder of an early drive-in restaurant chain named ―Pig Stand‖ in Texas, stated ―People with cars are so lazy they don‘t want to get out of the m to eat!‖ (快餐历史,2005). Even the rest of the United States was catching on to this ―drive-in fever‖. Only it was a seasonal thing for many states due to the cold weather in the winter.

During that time, two brothers named Richard and Maurice McDonald left their home in New Hampshire and seeking jobs in southern California. At first they tried opening a theater but it was not a success. Then they caught on to the new craze of eating at drive-in restaurants and they opened one in 1939, in Pasadena, California, calling it ―McDonald‘s Famous Hamburgers‖. In former, The McDonald brothers grew tired of having to hire new carhops and short-order cooks all the time, so at the end of the 1940‘s, they f ired everyone in their restaurant. They even were tired of replacing glassware, dishes and silverware so they decided to close the restaurant and re-opened with a ―new‖ McDonald‘s, one that did not use any dishes, silverware or glasses. Everything switched over to paper and plastic. There was no longer a need for short-order cooks as each employee hired only had to learn one specific task, i.e. make the French fries or make the burgers or deliver the food, etc. Food was made with a ―Speed Service System‖ designed by the McDonald brothers and it revolutionized the restaurant business. 2. The Emergences and Expansion of KFC

KFC, shorted from Kentucky Fried Chicken, is a chain of fast food restaurants based in Louisville, Kentucky. KFC has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Yum Brands since 2002. The company was founded as Kentucky Fried Chicken by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952. The company adopted the abbreviated form of its name in 1991. Starting in April 2007, the company began using its original appellation of Kentucky Fried Chicken again for its signage, packaging and advertisements in the United States as part of a new corporate re-branding program; newer and remodeled restaurants will have the new logo and name while older stores will continue to use the 1991 signage. Additionally, the company continues to use the

abbreviation KFC freely in its advertising. Internationally the company is still known as KFC.

KFC primarily sells chicken in form of pieces, wraps, salads , sandwiches and so on. While at first it is only focus on fried chicken. KFC also offers a line of roasted chicken products, sides and desserts. Outside of North America, KFC offers beef-based products such as burgers or kebabs, pork-based products such as ribs and other regional fare. The popularity and novelty of KFC made it famous and popular throughout the world. The fast food like KFC is also developed in the whole world. (https://www.360docs.net/doc/ce13254307.html,)

Ⅲ. The Development of Fast Food Industry

There are several reasons for fast food popular. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time, you just go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food is ready there in time. Second, you can either eat it there or take it away. Third , the environment of fast food restaurant is both clean and comfortable. Forth it has excellent service, and the quality of food is guaranteed. However, it terns of nutrition, it is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutrition value.

Most people think that it is the McDonald brothers who start the fast-food craze in America, but in reality, it is the White Castle hamburger chain that actually started fast food history in America. J. Walter Anderson opened the first White Castle in 1916 in Wichita, Kansas, and people liked the cheap hamburgers, fries, and colas he offered. However, fast-food did not really become common in America until after World War II, when Americans first began to fall in love with their cars, and had leisure time and more money to spend on eating out.

The real heroes of fast food history in America are Richard and Maurice McDonald, the two brothers who created the first McDonald‘s restaurant in 1948 in San Bernardino, California. They wanted their restaurant to be more efficient and cost-effective, so they designed a simple menu in a small building without any tables, so people took their food and ate in their cars. By 1953, the brothers had decided to franchise their idea, and two franchisees opened in Downey, California and Phoenix,

Arizona.

As the McDonald‘s became more successful, others began to take notice and copy their example to make their own fast food history in America. Keith Cramer started an operation in Florida that would turn into Burger King. And Ray Kroc, a blender salesman, was so impressed with McDonald‘s that he asked the brothers if he could sell their franchises. He opened his own McDonald‘s in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1954, and eventually he bought out the brothers and became the owner of the corporation. Kroc was the driv ing force behind the food chain‘s fantastic growth throughout America in th e late 50s and early 60s. Wendy‘s was created by Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio, where the first restaurant opened in 1962.

Becau se of this ―Speeder Service System‖ that the McDonald Brothers created, entrepreneurs from all over the country went to the new McDonald‘s in California to see how the restaurant operated. Then they went home and built imitation restaurants of their own, f or example, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy‘s Old-Fashioned Hamburgers, Dunkin‘ Donuts, Kentucky Friend Chicken (KFC) and so on. The number of new restaurants was countless. Even Carl Karcher, the man who began with one hot dog cart, opened his own fast food chain too, known as Carl Jr.‘s.

Today, fast food chains have spread all around the world, and have spread American culture right along with them. There are many more popular chains, like Carl's Jr., Arby‘s, Domino's and Dairy Queen, indicating that fast food isn‘t always about hamburgers. In fact, pizza, Chinese food, and just about any type of food imaginable are now available for take-out at fast-food chains across the globe. Fast food history in America is really the foundation of fast food as we know it today, and that history has made millionaires out of many of the people who first stated the fast food concept.

Ⅳ. The Types and Culture of Fast Food

A. Types of Fast Food

Fast food is food cooked before it is sell and kept warm, or reheated to order. Many fast-food restaurants are part of restaurant chains and standardized foodstuffs

are shipped to each restaurant from central locations. But in many place, especially in China, There are also simpler fast-food outlets, such as stands or kiosks, which provide food in small shelter or on chairs for customers. As the developing world gets richer, a quicker, more convenient lifestyle is taking hold. Fast food becomes a symbol of this modem lifestyle. Fast food chains increase currently all over the world. Most of these places work on a simple principle—there is a long counter to display a list of the items available, and behind which several people are serving. Individual queues form in front of each assistant. You can order what you want and receive them immediately.

There are many types of fast food restaurants, the most wide spread type is serving hamburgers, such as the McDonald‘s. But the fast food chains not only serve hamburgers, but also chips, pizza, ice-creams, soft drinks, soda and so on.

Burgers and sandwiches perhaps are the most popular fast food items that might have attained popularity with the big-names, and now they are available at every corner and every eatery or every single food joint. Burgers with vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian patties are available to look for healthier options like burgers with grilled patties and lots of greens. Use of ketchup, mayonnaise, excess butter, fat, should be avoided due to the excessive amount of fat or sodium in some cases. Hot dogs are another popular fast food item available easily at negligible prices. Cold drinks and soda that often accompany these fast food items also belong to the same category.

Even salads are a part of fast food but what matters the ingredients of the salad are and the dressing that has to be picked out wisely. Choose salad dressings with too much butter, oil, mayonnaise, cheese, yogurt or any other fatty substances are harm to the body. People could use the green salads with grilled or roasted portions of chicken instead of using ingredients like fried chicken in the salad. Tacos, nachos, and vegetarian and non-vegetarian wraps are also some of the popular fast foods, which are very popular with the fast food generation.

Another category in the fast food section is the Chinese fast food, which includes an assortment of noodles, rice, and crispy fried nuggets that are sold either at

proper food joints or even roadside kiosks. India also has its share of fast food with samosa, vadapav, parathas, and various types of chat. Most of the fast food items sold anywhere in the world have the same issues – lack or a relatively lower percentage of essential nutrients and presence of excessive fats.

B. Variants

When talk about fast food, people will think of KFC and McDonald‘s, but there are many other kinds of fast food in China. Meanwhile Chinese takeaways/takeout restaurants are particularly popular. They normally offer a wide variety of Asian food (not always Chinese), which has normally been fried. The customer chooses the size of the container they wish to buy, and then is free to fill it with their choice of food. It is common to combine several options in one container, and some outlets charge by weight rather than by item. Many of these restaurants offer free delivery for purchases over a minimum amount. Nowadays, Chinese fast food is also very popular. It can be reached perhaps anywhere. So it is very convenient.

Generally speaking, Chinese fast food is divided into eight categories which are quite different from each other. Each category has its certain specialities which give people different taste. But no matter what category the food belongs to, it should have four characters. They are color, flavor, taste and shape. According to these, the food will be judged as good or bad. A so-called excellent dish should be very colorful, delicious, nutritious, and good-looking in its shape.

In United States, Pizza is a common fast food category, but nowadays it has developed to several categories. Such as Domin o's Pizza, Sbarro and Pizza Hut. Menus are more limited and standardized than in traditional pizzerias, and pizza delivery, often with a time commitment, is offered.

Fish and chip shops are also a kind of fast food which popular in the Uniteirsyd Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Fish is battered first and then deep fried. A

Dutch fast food meal often consists of a portion of French fries with a sauce and a meat product. The most common sauce to accompany French fries is mayonnaise, while others can be ketchup or spiced ketchup, peanut sauce or piccalilli. Sometimes the fries are served with combinations of sauces, most famously special: mayonnaise, with ketchup and chopped onions.

C. Fast Food Culture

Although those pizza, cheese burgers and fried chicken are part of American fast food culture, they do not represent the best on. The fast-food giant McDonald‘s has been accused of causing obesity. And yet, the growing number of its chain stores is still increasing around the world. In the West countries, McDonald‘s and KFC might be considered very familiar, but in China their food is a luxury for many people, some poor families cannot afford it.Having meals has become a part of our routine. Although the fast food has became the better choice because of its time-saving and convenience, 2/3 Americans do not want to go to these kinds of fast food restaurants. The experience of fast food connects with the high consumption in the present modern community. General economic status and standard of their cultural characteristics decide that today‘s society can only be a cultural industry, and the culture of fast food is a typical of the culture industry. No matter you like this kind of culture or not, the fast food has already became a special way to meet people‘s life demand. Therefore, it has been a quite deep connection between the fast food culture and people‘s life.

The fast food culture attracts the people‘s interest by its colorful form of attractive lines and eye-catching decorations.Consumption of fast food culture is the nature of relationships through market positioning. Because of the public sentiment, there is such a demand and it constitutes a fast-food culture version of this consumption. In the consumer society, the public desires expand unprecedented. The emergence of fast food culture making the public desire decline. Constantly requires promote the fast-food culture having great vitality to stand in the commerce society. It can be seen that the fast food culture and the public requires will be an

organic integration, and it will extend wider and wider.

Ⅴ. Double-Side Effects of Fast Food

A. Positive Effect

1. Improve the Development of Economics

Many people believe that fast food chain-stores limited native catering industrial development so that it badly affects local economy development. Many people admit that too many fast food multiple shops surely have harmful effect on local catering industry to some degree. However, the development of fast food multiple shops can prompt local economy development in many aspect. For example, fast food chain-stores` materials are coming from native land, which can improve native agriculture development. For example, in our country the KFC‘s materials of 76,000 ton chicken and potatoes are all produced by our country in 2009. Second, the tax from fast food chain-store increase government‘s reverence. In 2000, the direct tax from KFC is up to 1.2297 billion RMB, and the indirect tax is 2.5035 billion RMB. They become much higher in recent years. From these cases and figures we cannot deny that the benefits of fast food development.

F ast food has such a huge impact on people‘s society and economy. The variety of fast-food form has attracted many consumers, the vast majority of consumers are children and young people.Because the scope of fast food industry consumption extend, the impact on the economy will then increase. The managers of fast-food industry promote their products through media and advertising, so that there is people‘s love-hate relationship with fast food. In order to win a better performance, many of the leading fast food brands engaged in a fierce price war, which also stimulated the public‘s consumption, resulting in another wave of cost-effectiveness.

In the United States alone, consumers spent US$110 billion on fast food in 2000 which increased from US$6 billion in 1970. The National Restaurant Association forecasted that fast food restaurants in the U.S. would reach US$142 billion in sales in 2006, a 5% increase over 2005. In comparison, the full-service restaurant segment of

the food industry is expected to generate $173 billion in sales. Fast food has been losing market share to fast casual dining restaurants, which offer more robust and expensive cuisines. (According to the survey of John Eligon (2008-01-13) ―Where to Eat? A New Restaurant Genre Offers Manhattan More Choices‖)

2. Jobs and Labor Issues

As the number of fast food restaurants proliferates, job opportunities proliferate, too. Today, millions of workers are employed in the areas of food preparation and food servicing including fast food in the USA.Moreover, quick food culture gives us some beneficial enlightenment. First of all, fast food culture brings natives administration culture. Fast food chain-stores` employers choose native managers and labors, then the core company gives them training and cultivation. They, especially managers, are taught advanced administration experience which native catering industry can learn a lot from. In addition, fast food from foreign countries tries its best to adapt to local diet culture. Not only because its core company cultivates native people, but also the employers take pains to make quick food adapt to local people‘s taste and diet habit. For instance, in our country‘s KFC, there are Dragon Twister, Egg & V egetable Soup and Seasonal V egetable which aim at Chinese taste and will not be found in other countries. As we can see, fast food form other countries becomes localization in native culture.

It also has some questions. The most important one is labor costs. Employees are the backbone of the fast food industry. Proper training is necessary to the orderly and quick service that customers expect. Y et, employee turnover can be as high as 200% per year. With such a turnover, owner-operators of franchise and non-franchise restaurants have the daunting task of constantly training an entirely new workforce. Policies and procedures need to be explained to each new employee. For example, sanitation is crucial as knows, how to act in a robbery situation. Break and clocking-in policies must be observed. With the constantly changing workforce, an owner operator using an effective employee manual can quickly train new employees on what is expected of the employee and what the general practices and procedures are of proper employee conduct.

3. Globalization

In 2006, the global fast food market grew by 4.8% (Linda Stradley, 2008) and reached a value of 102.4 billion (Linda Stradley, 2008) and a volume of 80.3 billion (Linda Stradley, 2008) transactions. In India alone the fast food industry is growing by 40% (Linda Stradley, 2008) a year. McDonald's is located in 120 (Linda Stradley, 2008) countries and on 6 continents and operates over 31,000 (Linda Stradley, 2008) restaurants worldwide. On January 31, 1990 McDonald‘s opened a restaurant in Moscow, and broke opening day records for customers served. The Moscow restaurant is the busiest in the world. The largest McDonald‘s in the world is located in Beijing, People's Republic of China. There are numerous other fast food restaurants located all over the world. Burger King has more than 11,100 (Linda Stradley, 2008) restaurants in more than 65 (Linda Stradley, 2008) countries. KFC is located in 25 (Linda Stradley, 2008) countries. Subway has 29,186 restaurants located in 86 (Linda Stradley, 2008) countries, the first non-US location opening in December 1984 in Bahrain. Pizza Hut is located in 26 (Linda Stradley, 2008) countries, with 100 locations in China. Taco Bell has 278 (Linda Stradley, 2008) restaurants located in 12 countries besides the United States.

Globalization is that the world is moving away from self-contained national economies towards an interdependent, integrated global economic system. It refers to the shift toward a more integrated and interdependent world economy. Fast food is becoming more and more popular around the world these years. It is estimated that there are more than 100 branches of McDonald‘s and KFC only in Beijing. But the fast food sell in China which crude material is always manufactures in other countries. So if something changed in China, it is sure affects other countries. Fast food is already spread into the world, it is sure increase the knowledge between countries.

B. Negative Effect

1. Increase of Blood Pressure

Most of the food which can be quickly cooked always contain high amount of sodium, especially the fried food, which increases and aggravates the risks of high

blood pressure. According to the recommendations of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, 1,200—1,500 mg of sodium is the daily sodium requirement for adults. Keeping these figures in mind, you should also know that the regular table salt that we consume contains 40% sodium and a single teaspoon of table salt contains 2,300 mg of sodium. Although the body requires minimum quantities of sodium, too much sodium contributes to high blood pressure. Sodium can also contribute to build up fluids in case of people who are suffering from congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, or kidney disease. So before we have fried food, we should tell ourselves not have too much.

2. Effects of Cholesterol

Fast food which contains Cholesterol is very dangerous for people‘s health. Always eating meat contains that cholesterol can lead to the accumulation of bad cholesterol in our body. Cholesterol molecules which accumulate in the arteries can lead to clogging or thickening of the arteries, which is likely to cause an obstructed blood flow and affect the blood pressure. In case the artery, which carries blood to the heart, gets clogged, it can result in heart attack or even heart failure in extreme cases where blood flow is completely obstructed. So it is very dangerous for the aged to eat too much fast food.

3. Contain too much Trans Fat

Trans fat is considered as the most harmful type of fat because it not only raise cholesterol levels in the blood and leading to high HDL, cholesterol levels pose an increase risk of heart disease but also reduces the ?good cholesterol‘ (High density lipoprotein) levels. Recently, trans fat is found abundantly in various fast foods. It is very frightened. Most commonly trans fat is a commonly found in ingredients in all the processed foods. Foods that contain artificial trans fats contain up to more than half trans fat as compared to their natural fat counterparts.

4. Unhealthy Lifestyle

Fast food not only itself contain too much fat but also leading an lifestyle of eating stably, which will increase our weight and leads to other complications like the

increase in the cholesterol level as well, blocking of the arteries, the increased risk of coronary diseases, in addition to the general physical discomfort posed by the extra weight. Fast food is also addictive and so it is very difficult to give up on their greasy and fatty foods and carbonated drinks and switch to healthier options.

Thus constant and regular consumption of fast food can lead to an overall unhealthy condition. Malnutrition, obesity, increased risks of heart attack, hypertension and an overall unhealthy body are some of the things that follow a fast food addiction. So if people want to lead a healthy and fulfilling life it is best to cut down the fast food intake, switch to healthier options and supplement it with regular fitness exercises. Health is one of the most important aspects that need to be taken care of for being truly happy in life. So, it is a must to solve these problems.

Ⅵ. Conclusion

Throughout the world, American fast-food chains have become symbols of Western economic development, opening everywhere from Bulgaria to Western Samoa. and attracted a large number of consumers and the economic benefits. Fast food industry is decided by the development of social progress and economic development, it improves people‘s living standards and way of life. The fast food industry is an important industry of living environment and investment environment, and also an important component of the consumer leisure, tourism, consumption, shopping and spending. The competition in the fast food market is very intensely, but should be focused on one aspect: that is, to eat fast food with nutrition, health. High-calorie fast food as a high-fat food is not suitable for eating. Fast food does have double-sided effects on the development of economy and people‘s life. Though fast food still have so many shortages of this or that, This kind of food culture is true developed to be part of people‘s life, no matter the criticism of fast food is true or not, fast food is still to be a trend in the future.

Hence, sometimes intercultural communication can be stressful. The good news is that we can learn and adapt to such stress and. During intercultural communication we have to keep in our mind that the communication strategies we use with persons with whom we are familiar may not be effective with persons from other cultures.
