问：罗老师好！我们现在读大三第一学期，开设了“翻译理论与实践”这门课，课后的笔译练习比较多。一做起翻译练习来，就自然想起要查查词典，英英词典、英汉词典或汉英词典等。请问有什么好的词典可以推荐介绍给我们？谢谢！
答：好的，我可以按英国、美国和中国的三大词典系列给同学们推荐介绍，大家可根据个人的实际需要来选择。但在这里我有一条忠告，就是在做翻译练习的时候不要过多地依赖词典，而要在阅读分析原文上面多下功夫，要深入理解原文词句在上下文当中的具体内涵。如果过多地依赖词典，对着词典照抄照搬，那么对原文的阅读和分析、理解和想象就会减少，这样翻译出来的东西往往质量不高，表现在篇章连贯性差、用词不贴切不传神等方面。总之，我们要善用词典，用得好，帮大忙；用不好，真倒霉。
1．英国词典系列
1.1 Oxford English Dictionary (简称OED，世界最大、最权威的学者型

2．文学翻译的语言表达问题
从事文学翻译必须使用文学语言，重视语言风格，做到译小说像小说，译诗歌像诗歌。下面介绍英文小说或散文翻译的几个侧面：
（1）文学语言具有准确、形象、生动、自然等特征，译者应根据原作的艺术意境和语言特色，在译文里寻找适当的语言形式，使之文情并茂。
例1：Daffodils all along the hedgerow swung like yellow, ruffled birds on their perches.
清风徐徐，沿着灌木篱笆旁的水仙花轻轻地摇摆着，颇似栖息的鸟儿掀动着金黄色羽毛。
例2：With tangled emotions, Syson noted the plum blossom falling on the profuse, coloured primroses, which he himself had brought here and set. How they had increased! There were thick tufts of scarlet and pink, and pale purple primroses under the plum trees.

（3）凭借自己的审美体验，深刻理解原作的艺术美，进而形神兼备地再现这种美。

翻译练习：
1．注意叙事层次
About twenty minutes before his fall, that is at about 9:10 a.m., Tusker has dragged Bloxsaw into his garage, locked him in, then told Ibrahim that he was dismissed and could clear out right away. He had paid him off. That was 9:15. (Parl Scott: Staying On)
2．注意如诗如画的情景描写
Magic willow-covered islands seem to float on the grayish moistness, and you do not know whether the mountains have gone up to meet the clouds or the clouds have come down to meet the mountains. (Lin Yutang: Moments in Peking)
3．注意人物形象的刻画
She was quite a child, perhaps seven or eight years old, slightly built, with a pale, small-featured face, and a redundancy of hair falling in curls to her waist. (Charlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre)
问: 英语里的否定句式不少,而且有些很难理解。在翻译中遇到这样的否定句，我们往往束手无策，请问罗老师有没有什么好办法？
答：说得对，对中国人来说，英语里的否定句式不仅难理解，有时简直就是陷阱。但不管遇到何种否定句式，首先要弄清楚否定的对象是什么。我读过倜西、董乐山等人编写的《英汉翻译手册》，书中有一节写的就是“否定的陷阱”，全面归
纳了英语里难以理解的否定句式，所举英文句子不仅丰富，而且汉语译文极为贴切地道。现摘引如下，供同学们学习参考。
否定的陷阱

1．not…because
（1）Political analysts were convinced that many Basques did not vote because they feared retribution.
有些政治家分析家认为，许多巴斯克人没有投票，因为他们害怕投票后会受到惩罚。
（2）Ford official s contend that the new contract does not effectively violate the guidelines because increased productivity will result in savings.
福特公司的负责人说，新合同实际上并没有违反那些指导原则，因为生产率的提高将带来好处。
（3）He replied that he would not discuss a private article because any paper on that subject should be properly written.
他回答说，他不愿意谈论任何私人性质的文章，因为有关这个问题的任何文件，应当由有关方面草拟。
以上三个例句是合乎中国人思路的，所以比较好理解，但下面的一些句子情况就不同了：
（1）Thatcher said, “I do not say this because I believe that we should be in any way provocative towards the Soviet Union or anyone else.”
撒切尔说：“我这样说，并不因为我认为我们该对苏联或其他任何人采取任何挑衅的态度。”
（2）I do not want to support a candidate because of blackmail and intimidation.
我不愿在讹诈和威胁之下去支持某一个候选人。
（3）West Germany was not rejecting the proposal because it was not a signatory of the four-power agreement on Berlin.
西德之所以拒绝这个建议，并不是因为它不是四国柏林协议的签字国。
（4）Washington, replying, wrote, “If my wishes would be of any avail, they should go to you in a strong hope that you will not withhold merited promotion from Mr. John Adams because he is your son.”

（5）Don’t be inflexibly devoted to a system just because it worked elsewhere.

6．cannot … too
（1）He cannot be praised too much.

当然，若要追根到底，可能要归咎于古代印欧母语，不过此话太长。
8． absent
（1）He explained his silence by his absence at the battlefront.
他说，他所以那时没有表态是因为他不在场，到前线去了。
（2）The long absence in New England, he explained, “put my business so much behind-hand, that I have been in a continual hurry ever since my return.”
他解释道，由于去了一趟新英格兰，长期不在家，所以“手头积压了许多事情要处理，自从回来以后，我一直在日以继夜地干。”
（3）The Secretary is absent in New York.

9．I don’t think that…
这种套子可有两种译法，一为“我不认为……”，一为“我认为……不……”。但在绝大多数场合以第二种表达法为宜。
（1）In this context, our own answer was not very strong. I don’t think it came across as a ringing affirmation of a commitment to a country that is so vital to us.
就这样一种背景而言，我们自己的答复是不够有力的。我认为，我们的答复不像是响亮地表示要坚决履行对一个与我们休戚相关的国家所承担的义务。
（2）I don’t think that Russian policy is formed that way any more than our policy is formed.

Editorial for IEEE Transactions On Power Electronics, January 2013 ORIGINALLY, this editorial was planned to be written in late 2012, but in the last year we have been working intensively with IEEE to reduce time from submission to final publication, and this editorial was written in the summer of 2012, and we are already in the process of finalizing the January issue 2013. This also means that we have two editors for this issue— Prof. B. Lehman, Northeastern University, is fully taking over the duty of Editor-in-Chief as of date January 1, 2013, and Prof. F. Blaabjerg, Aalborg University, is resigning from the job at that date. We have only 100–150 papers waiting for publishing, and keeping in mind 45–50 papers are needed for each issue, this is a short and manageable backlog. By making the electronic versions of manuscripts available so far ahead of time, papers become available for a longer time, and there is a good chance for more citations, which should increase the impact factor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS (TPEL). TPEL remains an outstanding Journal and it contributes dominantly to the power electronics technology and research development globally. The TRANSACTIONS performance is positioned very well in the global Electrical Engineering (EE) journals publications as it is among the top 10 most cited EE journals. In the last year, many indicators of our quality continued to improve: users of the TRANSACTIONS continue to be very satisfied with the paper quality, our reputation in power electronics is rising all over the world by having a fast review process, papers in the TRANSACTIONS are being cited more heavily, and we have continued to print useful future research on important and emerging industrial applications. Our publications are followed very carefully all over the world, and almost every month the TPEL has papers listed between the top 100 downloads from IEEE Xplore registered monthly. It is also worth remarking that the papers are mostly technology papers and not so much review papers. Power electronics has never been as important as it is now. Globally, people talk about global warming and the lack of energy resources. As a result, a number of large R&D programs have been initiated to come up with sustainable solutions based on power electronics. Excellent examples of power electronic emerging research topics and applications include energy effi- ciency, e-mobility and airplanes, micro- and smart-grid, renewable energy, e.g., wind power and photovoltaic, lighting—fields where power electronics are unavoidable. 英文资料翻译原文 Boiler management: General management principles and operating procedures are well known and must be always followed to avoid boiler mishap. With many small package boiler,the automatic control sequence usually ensures that the boiler fire is initially ignited from a diesel oil supply,and changed over to the usual source when ignition is completed.With good management ,to facilitate subsequent starting from cold,the fuel system of large boilers will have been flushed through with diesel oil when the boiler was on light duty immediately prior to being secured.When burning such diesel fuel it is essential for safety that only the correct(small) burner tip should be used.It should be kept in mind that if fire does not light,immediately shut off fuel and vent furance. Complete ignition of fuel in the furance is essential.The burner flame,the smoke indicator and the funnel should be frequently observed.With satisfactory combustion,the flame should appear incandescent with an orange shade at the flame tip,and a faint brownish haze should show at the funnel.If on fist ignition the flame is uncertain,badly shaped and separates from the primary swirler ,momentary opening or closing of air register may correct. The PH value of the boiler feed water should kept between 8 and 9 and the boiler density less than 300 ppm but,if water samples show a heavy concentration of suspended mater,short blow-downs of 20 seconds duration should be given until the sludge content is seen to be reduced.The boiler should be blown down when the oil burner is operating,the water level lowered and then restored to prove the functioning of the low water cut-out and the oil burner start-up equipment.the boiler scum valve should also be operated at this time to keep the water level clear floating scum. Fuel burner components and igniter electrodes should be cleaned weekly and the furance examined to ensure that there are no excess carbon deposits. Tubes in the exhaust gas section of the boiler should be brushed through at about six-monthly intervals,and those in the oil-burning section periodically examined and cleaned as necessary with a wire bristle brush.With correct feed water treatment,blow-down procedures and sludge contents in water samples at a stable level,it should not be necessary to wash out the water side of the boiler more than once every three or four months. Boiler fires may be out of for long periods when a ship is at sea and the boiler steaming maintained by heat input from waste heat recovery plant.This operation is free from hazard,but feed water and boiler water treatment must be maintained to prevent internal deterioration or scale formation.Water level controller must be kept operable to protect external steam-using plant from water “carry-over”danger. If a boiler is isolated from the steam-using system it must be kept either in closed dry storage with a suitable internal desiccant,or completely full of treated water,or under a low steam pressure preferably maintained by a steam-heated coil.
