1. Preparing for college
When I went to Berkeley to take part in the entrance examination at university of California, I didn’t pass the exam of Greek, Latin and many other subjects. Therefore, I had to delay the day going to university for one year.
As for me, the elected were boys who were forced to learn what they had to learn. They had no interest in things outside their books. As this point, I was luckier than them, since my parents sent me to schools and let me learn music, drawing and so on. They gave me a lot of freedom and I could learn whatever attracted me.
To get me prepared for Berkeley, my father put me into the best private school in San Francisco and employed Mr. Noxon, one of the teacher there, to tutor me. Mr. Noxon taught me Greek, Latin, and English at school, and at his house he showed me the beauty and the meaning of the other subjects I had to learn for entrance. By his personal example and verbal instruction, I was greatly influenced. Besides, he purposely made me present at the conversation among his groups of friends on Saturday evening and through their exchanges of minds, I got the driving force to discover and to explore in my college.

2.The last world was love
When I was eleven years old, my mother and father had a prolonged quarrel. At that time, my father was 47 and worked as an assistant at a store. He worked 12 hours a day but didn’t earn much. My mother was a housewife and to me, she was a beautiful but moody woman. She always changed quickly from gladness to discontent, which bothered my father. In my family, there were other two members: my brother and my little sister.
Every time when my father got home from his work, the quarrel picked up. It had lasted for a long time before my brother pointed it out to me one day. Then one morning, my brother told me he couldn’t understand why and didn’t want him to go. However, he left all the same. After knowing that my brother had left, my parents didn’t mean to get him back.
One day, we received a letter from my brother, saying that he had found a job he liked and was going to college. The last word of the letter was love. Later, I had the chance to spend a few days with my brother and I found my brother was more mature than before.
Now, my own son is 16 and facing the same problems as my brother I’m prepared and know how to solve the problem.

3.Would you know a computer if you met one?
If you were asked whether you have ever used a computer your answer may be “No” or “In previous years”. In fact, many people have failed to realized that using computers directly or indirectly. The reason may be that they have a wrong conception of what a computer is.
In daily life, some computers you have used can be recognized more easily than others. For example, you will recognize the computer the registrar uses to enter the information of your chosen classes when you register for school. Moreover, the ATM is another identifiable computer. By comp

arison, you may not define the devices a supermarket cashier uses as computers, let alone the machine running the video game at the grocery store. Also, in the parking lot, you are indeed surrounded by many computers: in your car, you have multiple computers to control numerous functions when your car is being designed, the process involves repeated use of computers. One more example is that when you see a movie, many visual and audio sequences are made possible and life–like by computers. Finally, computers can do much more, including creating and printing newspapers, mornitoring patients, controlling a flight, measuring the ingredients of some products, routing letters for the post offices, and so on.
In one word, everyone uses computers everyday.

5.Shot actress-full story(1)
My wife and I lived in Claypole. I kept a watchmaker-and –jeweler’s shop next to Miss Porteus, the only actress in our village who speak to others. No one in the village knew about her. Her behaviors as well as her shops second totally foreign to us.
One day, I noticed the light in Miss bathroom was on from night till the next morning. At the beginning, we didn’t pay much attention. After it had burnt for three days, we decided to see if everything was right, through the bahroom window, I saw something unusual happened. We called the police, and after we broke down the door, we found Miss Porteus lying on the bathroom floor, shot dead.
Although I said nothing about death, the news spread quickly. We had reporters and photographers and detectives treading about the house and the garden all that day. And for the fist time, I missed going to the chapel that Sunday morning, the thick crowds made the tea shops and the sweet shops packed out. Families, dressed in their holiday clothes stared at Miss Portales’s window with mouths open. When I was out for a walk, everybody I knew would stopped me and asked some questions.

As it came out that Miss Porteus’s name was not Portues, a different story about her appeared. She was said to lack virtues. What was worse, my wife and I were said to be nosy parkers and I was even suspected of having wrongful relations with Miss Porteus. All these rumours collapse of yellow tie was found. It was very important because I thought his presence would made the rumours collapse of itself. It really did, and it was established beyond doubts left Claypole. Shortly after the end of the case, my wife died. A month later, I closed my shop and left Claypole. People in the town all knew what had happened to Miss Porteus, but no one knew how much I had suffered.
7.The open window
Framton Nuttel was undergoing a nerve cure, so he moved to a rural retreat. One day, he went to visit Mrs. Sappleton, an acquaintance of his sister. Since Mrs.Sppleton wa

s not available at that moment, he had to stay for a while with her niece, from whom he learnt a story about Mrs. Sappleton.
It was all about Mrs. Sappleton’s husband and two brothers. On the same day three years age, the three men and their went out for hunting, but they were engulfed in a piece of bog and never came back. From then on, Mrs. Sappleton was expecting them to return every day and she would never close the window through which the men went out till late in the night.
Hearing those and seeing the open window, Mrs. Nuttel felt somehow terrific. At this moment, the hostess turned up and began their small talks which were mostly about her husband and brothers. Mr. Nuttel wanted to change the topic but failed. Then the evening began to fall. When the three men and their dog appeared in the lawn towards the window, Mr. Nuttel thought he had seen ghosts and dashed off in panic, which puzzled the Sappletons. Once again, the girl made up a story to clear off the suspicion about Mr. Nuttel’s abnormal behavior. She was really a good story maker.

8.Button, button
One day, Mrs. Lewis found a package lying by her front door. She picked it up, carried it into the apartment, opened it and found a push-button unit in a wooden box. To the box sticked a piece of paper, reading “Mr. Steward will call in you at 8:00 p.m.
The doorbell rang at eight o’clock. It was Mr. Steward. He explained he was not a door-to-door salesman and just wanted to introduce the push-button unit. Besides, he gave the couple a key to the bell unit dome and added that if they pulled the button, someone in the world would die and in return they would get a payment of $50,000. Hearing those, Mr. Lewis thought they were fooled and drove the man out of the house.
Mrs. Lewis was curious about the unit. The next afternoon, she called Mr. Steward and inquired about it. However, she got almost the same explanation. Latter, when she found the unit still lying by the front door, she carried it into the kitchen. At dinner time, once again she mentioned the button. Obviously, she felt it tempting and implied if what the man had said was true. She would pull the button, which was turned down by her husband. The next day, when Mr. Lewis had gone to work, the wife took the unit out and pressed down the button on it. Nothing happened until it was before dinner when she received a call and was told her husband had died in a subway accident. At the very moment, she remembered Mr. Lewis’ life –insurance policy, which had a compensation of at most $50,000.

10.A horseman in the sky
One sunny afternoon of 1861, by a roadside of western Virginia, a soldier was lurking in a bush. He was lying in the angle of a road which went downward through the woods. Below, it was a high cliff and in the woods at the bottom of the valley hided five regiments of his comrades.
The young soldier was a Virginian called Carter Druse. Earlier, when a Union regiment had arrived at his hometown, he

left his family and joined the army. Upon leaving, his father told him to do whatever he thought to be his duty. Then because of his good performance, he won accolades of his fellows and his officers and therefore was selected for his present duty at the extreme outpost. However, he fell asleep at his post of duty.
When he woke up, he saw a statue of a man sitting on a horse at the edge of a rock. Under the blue sky, it was dignified, awe-inspiring and completely a work of art. However, when he was totally awake, he found it wasn’t a statue. He realized the significance if the situation and aimed his gun at the man. However, he had to give up when he saw the man turned his head and looked in the direction of him. After a short while, he clamed down and remembered the words of his father. Then he changed his aim to the horse and fired. The horse went over the cliff, together with the soldier’s father.
