A

In the Spotlight

11-year-old Aaron Conley, a child actor, has performed various roles more than 300 times. He now plays the part of Young Simba in the musical The Lion King.

When chosen for a part, Aaron must struggle with the demands of both his acting career and his schoolwork. It’s not easy to control the two very time-consuming activities.

In fact, going to school became difficult when Aaron began receiving acting jobs in New York City. Many child actors went to private schools that allow them to have flexible schedules. These schools are expensive, though, so Aaron attended public school. But the regular school schedule was difficult to follow since Aaron sometimes needed to leave in the middle of the school day for play practices or performances. Eventually his mother decided to teach Aaron at home. He still must complete schoolwork just like any other student. But now he has a flexible schedule and often completes his lessons before and after performances.

Aaron arrives at the theater early to prepare for his performances. He dresses in his costume (戏装) and special makeup to make him look like the young lion he plays. Aaron, acting in at least four shows every week, takes his job as seriously as the adult actors he works with in this professional theater environment.

His acting job is not limited to stage performances, though. Sometimes he also has to attend cast parties, or events where he signs autographs (亲笔签名). Child actors and their families make many sacrifices. One of the biggest sacrifices that Aaron’s family has made was moving from Mississippi to New York City. Aaron needed to live close to his acting jobs. This meant leaving behind family and friends. Also, because of his busy acting schedule, Aaron isn’t always able to participate in activities, which makes it difficult to make friends in a new place.

Night after night, show after show, Aaron Conley is reminded of the difficulties of his job, but he loves what he does. And that makes it worth the effort.

56. Aaron goes to public school in New York City because ______.

A. it is much cheaper

B. he can study at home

C. its schedule is flexible

D. there is less schoolwork

57. What is probably the most difficult part for Aaron?

A. Trying out for musical performances.

B. Attending cast parties and other events.

C. Putting on costumes for each performance.

D. Balancing his acting career with schoolwork.

58. In Paragraph 4, the author mainly talks about ______.

A. what Aaron does on his job

B. why Aaron must wear makeup

C. what part Aaron plays in a show

D. how Aaron works with other actors

59. Which word best describes Aaron’s attitude towards his acting job?

A. Patient.

B. Attentive.

C. Devoted.

D. Cautious.

B

More than 2,000 years ago, early Greek

geographers wrote about a distant continent called

Anti-Arktikos—“opposite of the Arctic”at the top of

the earth.

Although almost all of Antarctica is covered with

snow and ice, and its average annual temperature is far

below freezing, it is a desert. This may seem strange

because we often think of deserts as hot places filled

with sand. But Antarctica receives very little

precipitation (降雨量)—and this is what makes it a desert.

Plants and animals that live in Antarctica have to be tough. A few kinds of plants—some mosses, for example—grow in the 2 percent of Antarctic land that is free of ice. Some grow only during the summer months. Animals that survive year-round on the mainland are small and stay close to the ground—tiny insects such as mites and microscopic worms. Penguins (企鹅) and seals live on Antarctica only part of the year.

Some early visitors to the continent were hunters and explorers. Today more than 3,000 people from around the world—scientists and people who help them—work in Antarctica. It is not an easy place to live in, but it is a perfect laboratory for scientific study. Astronomers like the cold, clean, dry air because it allows their telescopes to see clearly into deep space. Biologists study life on and around Antarctica to learn about how animals and plants adapt to extreme temperatures and severe conditions. Geologists dig in Antarctica to find out what the land was like millions of years ago. Glaciologists (冰河学家)drill in the ice to discover climate changes throughout the ages.

With its huge icebergs, blue and silver landscape, whistling winds, and chilly seas, Antarctica can seem like another planet. The land and its icy cover have been compared with the Moon, Mars, and Europ(木卫二). Possibly no place on Earth is stranger or wilder—or more beautiful—than

Antarctica. Certainly, there is no other place we know of that is quite like it.

60. According to the passage, how is Antarctica similar to other deserts?

A. It is freezing there.

B. It rains and snows little there.

C. Few animals and plants live there.

D. Sand covers most of the land there.

61. Scientists are drawn to Antarctica because ______.

A. it is an excellent laboratory

B. it is an unusual place to live in

C. they enjoy hunting and fishing there

D. they can study frozen plants and animals

62 Which is the best title for the passage?

A. Frozen Desert

B. Natural Laboratory

C. Heaven on Earth

D. Bottom of the World

63. The author most likely wrote this passage to______.

A. advise readers to travel to Antarctica

B. ask readers to protect the environment

C. inform readers of an extraordinary place

D. introduce readers to a different way of life

In our wired world, technology develops at a rapid pace. Every day, a new gadget (设计精巧的工具)arrives and promises to bring us the future. In the race for faster computers and more powerful gadgets, it’s easy to forget about yesterday’s high-tech wonders.

Unfortunately, many times used computers and gadgets end up in landfills (垃圾场). To make gadgets work, materials like lead and mercury(汞)must be used. When mercury and lead end up in a landfill, they spread poisons into the earth, water, and air. This is called e-waste—and it’s becoming a big pollution problem around the world.

Big problems call for big solutions, so adults and kids are working hard to clean up e-waste. You can help, too.

The trick to stopping e-waste is to catch it before it gets into the landfill. That’s what the students at Cityside Middle School in Zeeland, Michigan, US do. They organized a computer drop-off event, asking people to bring out their old computers, printers and other accessories (配件). Craig Greshaw, the school’s computer teacher who helped organize the event, believes that knowing about computers goes beyond surfing the Web. With the school gym filled with old computers, the students were ready for the next step in cleaning up the high-tech trash: turning old computers into new ones.

That’s where RePC in the US steps in. The Seattle company takes e-waste and turns it into e-gold. “Almost every part of a computer can be reused or recycled,” says Mar Dabek, owner of RePC. Sometimes you can make a new computer from the parts of the old one. It is called refurbishing. Buying a refurbished computer is a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

Recycling old computers is big business. Many other companies like RePC have computer

64. Many computers and gadgets most likely end up in landfills because ______.

A. computer companies produce lots of low-quality products

B. it is cheaper to buy new products when people replace old ones

C. school technology education fails to teach students about recycling

D. the development of new technology makes present gadgets out of date

65. When donating a computer, people should ______.

A. delete all the programs from the computer

B. keep all the computer accessories together

C. choose a big company to drop of the computer

D. send a list of accessories to the company in advance

66. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. People around the world are recycling computer accessories.

B. To stop e-waste is to find a new need for the old equipment.

C. Tech gadgets as well as computers can be recycled and reused.

D. Computers and electronic gadgets are often dumped in landfills.

67. How is the article organized?

A. By explaining cause and effect.

B. By making comparison and contrast.

C. By analyzing problems and solutions.

D. By giving main idea and supporting details.

Happiness may be the primary goal of human existence. Everyone from writers, philosophers to the average person on the street thinks a great deal about happiness. What makes happiness so important?

Not only does happiness feel good, but it appears to provide a variety of psychological and physical benefits. Happiness plays a significant role in enhancing (增强)good health, strengthening the immune (免疫的)system, promoting longevity, improving productivity and performance. Happy people work hard, play hard, have an active social life (and a social conscience), experience good health, and live longer.

Humans experience happiness from a wide range of things, from traveling to an attractive destination to redecorating one’s home, from winning a game of soccer to eating a delicious meal. Simply watching a favorite television show or laughing at a funny joke can lighten a blue mood. While the happiness produced by such experiences tends to be short lived, certain conditions do promote a more long-lasting and durable state of happiness as a lifestyle: a wide social network, believing in a meaningful reason for one’s existence, and establishing goals and working to achieve them.

Surprisingly, income is not a primary factor in determining a person’s level of happiness once the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter have been met. More important is one’s social netwo rk. Being socially active may be more effective in increasing one’s immunity to illness than a vaccine (疫苗). Misery may love company, so does happiness. Having close friends and family is vital to one’s overall level of happiness. Even sharing one’s home with an animal companion can make a person happier.

Happiness is not an innate characteristic but may actually be developed as a habit. Scientists suggest that incorporating new habits and practices can go a long way in increasing one’s state of happiness. While people generally do not transform their basic character, people can learn to become happier by participating in a variety of activities, including socializing, reading funny books, keeping a gratitude journal, engaging oneself in pleasurable activities, such as sports, hobbies, or the arts, focusing on positive outcomes, and performing acts of kindness for others. Apparently, doing something to make someone else happy will make you happy, too.

68. In Paragraph 2, by stating “and a social conscience” the author wants to ______.

A. point out that a social conscience leads to good health

B. emphasize that it’s important for people to play and work hard

C. point out that having a social conscience can promote longevity

D. emphasize that a social conscience is a part of an active social life

69. In the last paragraph, the underlined word “innate” most probably means ______.

A. unique

B. inborn

C. strong

D. physical

70. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Puppy Food

A puppy is a precious, new addition to many families.

The excitement and joy it gives us will live on in our

memories. But to ensure a long and energetic life, your

puppy must have the proper nutrition right from the start.

__71 With all the different varieties on the market

in all of their attractive packaging, a dry food formulated (按

配方制造的)specifically for puppies is best for the

development of their teeth. A further benefit is that it is less

expensive than the canned variety.

Contrary to the belief of many first-time puppy owners, it is not always the best idea to purchase food that is extra high in protein, calcium (钙), or vitamin levels. One example is that over supplementation and even extra helpings of food can lead to hip dysphasia (发育不良). 72 If you have a “small-breed”(小型犬) puppy, buy a food labeled as such. Similarly, the same would be true for “large-breed”, active dogs, and so on.

Don’t feed table scraps (剩饭)to your puppy frequently. It will make your puppy become selective about dog food. 73 Dog biscuits and other treats are fine, but they should not be a main part of a puppy’s diet.

__74 Each puppy is unique, however, so if your puppy is not hungry that often, feeding twice a day is acceptable. After ten to twelve weeks of age, feed your puppy twice per day. __75__ Pick up the plate with the remaining food, because if you let your puppy eat too much and too often by keeping food accessible at all times, he or she may become overweight and have health problems as an adult. Like humans, your puppy will not enjoy the food as much if it is there at all times.

A. Young puppies should be fed three times a day.

B. Puppy food is rich in nutrients, such as protein and calories.

C. You might ask yourself what kind of food is best for your puppy.

D. Set feeding times for your puppy so you can monitor his or her diet.

E. Allow your puppy to eat as much as he or she would like in fifteen minutes.

F. In addition, a high intake of calcium is associated with bone disease in many dogs.

G. Also, it can cause an upset stomach or other health issues due to an unbalanced diet.
