When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes often. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.

People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing and reading, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.

People who are farsighted face just the opposite problem. They can see things that are

far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts. Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the side of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can not see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.

50.We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ________.

A. we think about our eyes

B. we cannot see clearly

53.To see a small thing at night, it is better to look ________ .

A.with wide open eyes

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things: they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle, compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine(常规) work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, and how to know what they know or do not know.

54.According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by _.

A.listening to skilled people’s advice

B.asking older people many questions

C.making mistakes and having them corrected

D.doing what other people do

55.Which of the following does the writer think teachers should NOT do?

A.Give children correct answers.

B.Allow children to make mistakes.

C.Point out children’s mistakes to them.

D.Let children mark their own work.

56.According to the writer, teachers in school should ________.

A.allow children to learn from each other

B.point out children’s mistakes whenever found

C.give children more book knowledge

D.correct children’s mistakes as soon as possible

57.The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are ________.

A.different from learning other skills

B.the same as learning skills

C.more important than other skills

D.not really important skills

D

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget

bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which

will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately

after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or possibly erase(抹

去),the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested

that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.

Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can ruin people's lives . They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,”

said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve

a lot of that suffering."

But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

58. The passage is mainly about _________.

A. a new medical invention

B. a new research on the pill

C. a way of erasing painful memories

D. an argument about the research on the pill

59. The drug tested on people can __________.

A. cause the brain to fix memories

B. stop people remembering bad experiences

C. prevent body producing certain chemicals

D. Wipe out the emotional effects of memories

60. We can infer from the passage that ___________.

A. people doubt the effects of the pills

B. the pill will stop people's bad experiences

C. taking the pill will do harm to people's health

D. the pill has probably been produced in America

第二节(共5小题,每题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从下框的A-F选项中选出能概括出每段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项是多余项。(说明:E涂AB;F涂AC)

A Suggestions on having interviews

B Be yourself

C Listen before talking

D Use your eyes and smile

E Focus your energy

F Qualities of good communication 61.

Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is unspoken. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes. Your good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include physical appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the ability to hold the interest of others. What should we do so that our communication will be effective? Here are my suggestions.

62.

Firstly, the trick is to be consistently you, at your best. The most effective people never change character from one situation to another. They’re the same whether they’re having a conversation with their close friends, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for

a job. They communicate with their whole being.

63.

Secondly, whether you’re talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them. Don’t break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, then look directly at those in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The best type of smile and eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not forced.

64.

You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can’t learn anything when you talk. When you attend a meeting, a party or an interview, don’t immediately start throwing your opinions. Stop for a second. Absorb what’s going on. What’s the mood of the others –are they down, up, happy, expectant? Are they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what’s happening with others, you will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk.

65.

How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the meeting – yours and the other’s. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself. Focus on the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy comes across when we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved with your audience and your message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagr ee with you, but they can’t question your belief.

Time is more important than money

People often say :” time is money “ but in fact , time is more important than money , why ? because when money is spent , we can earn it back , but when time is lost , it will never return .

The time we have is limited , every second is precious , but there are a lot of people who don’t know the importance of time , they kill away the time chatting smorking drinking or glambing . they didn’t realize that wasting time is simply wasting their valuable life .

In a word , w e should get into the habit of saving time , we can’t leave what can be done today till tomorrow .
