Why does a large education nation like China have so few world renowned scientists as the US? Educationists from China and the US try to find out the answer to questions like this at a forum on the basic education strategy.

The forum, held recently, was jointly organized by the Education Development Research Center of the Ministry of Education in China and the Postgraduate School of the University of Pennsylvania in the US. It aims to find out similarities and differences that exist between two countries in their educational system.

While some educationists in China keep a doubtful eye to the country's educational system in recent years, their American counterparts give a positive answer to the basic education in China, saying that it is still one of the best in the world.

An American educationist told reporters that basic education in the US was criticized in recent years due to its political tendency. On the contrary, Chinese government's stress on basic education and qualified teachers has set a good example. At primary and middle school, pupils in China did better in math and science lessons than the US pupils. However, few grow to be world "masters". Why? Educationists attributed this to China's stress on examination rather than students' interest.

Deputy Director of the postgraduate school of Pennsylvania University said American teachers encourage students to focus on their strong points. In China, students are driven to study to pass the entrance examination test and they do not pay much attention to their own interest.

At the forum, director of the Education Development Research Center Mr.Zhang said in the future, the research center would make its middle and long-term basic education strategy by taking some references from other countries including the US. When a tornado hit a small town nearby, many families were left homeless. After- ward, all the local newspapers carried stories of the families who suffered the hardest. One day, a picture touched me. A young woman stood in front of a mobile home.

A young boy, seven or eight, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching at her skirt was a little girl who stared into the camera with confusion and fear. The article below gave clothing sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves.

I took the picture home, explaining their situation to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan. "We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing," I said. "We'll share what we have with them. " I bought three large boxes and placed them in the living room. Meghan watched as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods, food, soap, and other things. While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up discarded toys and games."I'll help you find something for the little girl," I said. The boys placed the toys they had chosen into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much-loved doll, and hugged her tightly to her chest. She paused in front of the box that held the toys. "Oh, honey," I said. "you don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much. " Meghan nodded, eyes glistening with held-back tears. "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she'll make that little girl happy, too. " Swallowing hard, I stared at Meghan for a long time, wondering how I could teach the boys the lesson she had just taught me. I suddenly realized generosity was giving what you cherished most.

I, who had wanted to teach, had been taught. The boys were open-mouthed, as their sister placed her favorite doll in the box. Without a word, Brad went to his room and came back with one of his favorite action figures. A slow smile spread across Brett's face.Amazed, I realized the boys had also recognized what Meghan's gesture

meant. Holding back tears, I pulled three of them into my arms. I removed my old jacket from the box and replaced it with the new one that I had found on sale last week. I hoped the young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did. 46. Which word can be used to describe the toys and games that the boys first put

into the boxes?

A. Unwanted

B. Second-handed

C. Valueless

D. he could do the same thing as his sister

49. The mother in the story was_______.

A. good at teaching

B. moved deeply by her daughter

C. unsure about real generosity at first

C. We should help troubled people with old clothes.

D. We should help those people in trouble with our favorite.

Oslo (Xinhua) -- The Norwegian Government is doing its utmost trying to control the development of its petroleum industry. Norwegian parliament issued a new law limiting exploration to the region south of the southernmost parts of the long coastline;meanwhile the authority deliberately restricts the output of the petrochemical companies(though the standards have already been raised); and accordingly, the number of native workers should make up a certain percentage of all their labor force, and companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But, the truth is, the petrochemical companies still have solutions and have no difficulties in getting over the problems. Thus, the public doubts that the Government will be able to control the situation and hold things back for long. As one Norwegian politician said last week, "We will soon be changed beyond all recognition. "

Ever since the war, a project of development in the area--north of the Arctic Circle has been carried out by the Government. During the past few years people have witnessed a great success and improvement. Tromso has been built up into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and healthy industry. But the petroleum industry has already intentionally started to draw people south, and within a few years the whole northern policy could be in ruins.

The effects of the petroleum industry would not be limited to the north, however. The service industry and the tourist industry are losing most of their

workers to the petroleum industry. The lower prices of commodities imported probably will threaten the existence of some smaller industries.

The real argument over petroleum industry is its threat to the Norwegian mode of living. Peasants and fishermen do not make up most of the population, but they are important part of it because Norwegians see in them many of the qualities that they regard with pride as essentially Norwegian. And it is the peasants and fishermen who are most critical of the petroleum industry because of the damage that it might cause to the countryside, to the sea and the whole environment.

51. The Norwegian Government would prefer the petroleum industry to________.

A. sell the petrol it is producing abroad

B. slow down the rate of its development

C. provide more jobs for foreign workers

D. develop more quickly than at present

52. What can be inferred from saying "We will soon be changed beyond all recognition"?

A. petrochemical companies will press on the government to alter the laws.

B. The society will experience a big change with the petrochemical companies.

C. The society will be changed greatly by the development of the petrochemical companies.

D. petrochemical companies will experience a boom that the Norwegian has never

seen.

53. According to the passage, the petroleum industry might lead to______.

A. the development of northern industry

B. the development of northern new towns

C. the failure of the northern development project

D. a growth in population in northern part

54. All over the country of Norway, which one might be the effect of the development

of the petroleum industry?

A. a large reduction in unemployment

B. a growth in the tourist industry

C. a reduction in the number of existing small industries

D. the development of a number of service industries

55. Why are the Norwegian peasants and fishermen important part of the population?

A. They form such a large part of Norwegian population

B. Their lives and values represent the spirit of the Norwegian people

C. The Norwegian society benefits a lot from them.

D. They regard petrol as a threat to the Norwegian way of life

A video clip was shown ahout the-worst drought that the southwest of China has experienced in the recent six decades, which affects more than 50 million people seriously. Over 20 million people are trapped in the hopeless situation of lacking drinking water, while 40 million hectares of farm land expects no harvest at all.Ironically, however, it's common to see that the taps are left running in the toilets in our school. Worse still, students always use more water than needed to brush their teeth, wash their, faces and dishes, causing a great waste of water. Therefore, we appeal to students to save water resources and make good use of every drop of water.
