1.About the author

Somerset Maugham 萨默塞特.毛姆: He was born in 1874 and died in 1965. He was a British writer, whose novels and short stories are characterized by great narrative facility, simplicity of style, and a disillusioned and ironic point of view. His partially auto biographical novel Of Human Bondage <<人性的枷锁>>(1915) is

generally acknowledged as his masterpiece and is one of the best realistic English novels of the early 20th century.

英国著名小说家,剧作家,散文家, 于1874年1月25日出生在巴黎。8岁时母亲去逝,10岁时父亲死于胃癌。他的拉丁语和希腊语成绩突出,但有一只脚畸形,不擅长体育运动,口吃。毕业于医学院,是一名同性恋。最著名的作品《月亮与六便士》the Moon and Sixpence《人性的枷锁》《刀锋》The Razor’s Edge《面纱The Painted Veil 》以间谍生涯为素材的作品《艾兴顿Ashenden》.最重要的间谍活动曾在瑞士充当英国军情六处的间谍,试图扶持克伦斯基临时政府,阻止俄国革命.

Many people say: I can’t believe that. I can’t believe that man is that bad.” But just look at the way people treat each other, you will know the cruel side of man. Nations will go to war when practically nothing is to be gained. People will kill for greed and for personal power. (人类甚至会为贪婪,权利去杀人)

Thomas Hardy said, cruelty is the law pervading(遍及) all nature and society; and we can’t get ou t of it. We just forget that we are part of the nature. Death and decay(衰退)will remind us that we are the part of nature, we have to face the law of the nature(自然法则):cruelty

Step 3 Prediction (5 minutes)

Ss look at the title, and then predict what the text is about, or what kinds of plot are possible under such a title.

Upon first seeing the title, readers may think: It is a story about how people helped their friend in need. However, when they finish reading it, readers will find it is an entirely different story: Those who appear to be friendly may turn out to be so evil – minded as to be ready to strike a cruel blow a t a friend in need.

Step 4 The Outline of the Text (5 minutes)

This passage shows us a wealthy merchant, appearing to be kind and gentle to everyone, turned out to be such a cold-blooded man as insulted and fooled his friend, a needy and helpless man to death; and moreover, he appeared so indifferent to that man’s death. By this, the author aims to point out that one’s appearance is always deceptive; therefore, we shall not judge people only by appearance.

The 2nd Period

Step 1 Text Organization (15minutes)

Part I: It is no easy job to judge people for they aren’t always what they appear to be. Part II: 2-3. kind and gentle, Edward Burton ,a wealthy merchant, seemed as if he could not bear to hurt a fly.

Part III: 4-51.As it turned out, Burton was cold-blooded enough to send a friend to certain death.

▲War is a permanent feature of human history. Statistics show that in more than 3,500 years of recorded history, only 286 have been warless. ▲the Pool of Peace:a huge mine crater in Ypres which is now filled with water. On June 7, 1917, during the third major battle at Ypres, Allied soldiers detonated 19 mines laid underneath German defensive positions for the purpose of removing German soldiers from the Messines Ridge. 读《面纱》后感 面前这本书,面纱,The Painted Veil, by W.S.Maugham, 阮景林译,重庆出版集团,年出版。 第一次听到这本书,是有一次跟宿舍老大聊QQ,老大说,他 最近翻译的一本书出版了,叫做面纱。我当时不是很在意,因为 在宿舍的时候,老大就经常拿着英文文稿,在慢慢的翻译;除此之外,他最大的乐趣就是足球了。老大能在6人宿舍狭小的空间里,连续颠球个,对于不会颠球的我来说,简直奉他为偶像。 第一次读毛姆的小说,是年初坐火车时读的《月亮和六便士》,读完之后很喜欢,也非常感谢推荐我读这本书的人;当然还推荐了《刀锋》(我还没买),但是手里却有《面纱》——年1月1号,那天有一个晚会,据说晚会上要准备一些礼物,对于我这样不擅长 也不喜欢交际却喜欢看书的人来说,只能买书当做礼物了。那天 在第三极逛了逛,随便买了两本书,而后就看到这本《面纱》了,倒不是别的吸引了我,只因为不小心看到翻译者居然是老大,想 到在宿舍时,他在琢磨是不是应该把hold翻译成“把持”、那个 句子翻译出来后有“把持不住”的字样时,我们就取笑“把持不住”这个短语...那样的日子真的很快乐。 买《面纱》这本书的时候,我不知道什么时候才会去读它,甚至担心像蔡康永《丢书》(《有一天啊宝宝》)里说的那样:“‘得到的时候,好珍惜喔...’翻着某些书,心里还是忍不住会这样想,

《卡塔丽娜》读后感 羊年岁暮读完了毛姆的最后一个长篇《卡塔丽娜》。毛姆的悠长叙事,风趣幽默和人文情怀汇聚其中。 和他推崇的奥斯丁一样,毛姆的叙事也是娓娓道来,不紧不慢。不像大仲马那样滔滔不绝,让人不得不饕餮般一口气吞下;也不像小仲马那样有许多冗笔,索然无味。或许英国作家的文风就像英伦衣装一样,精致典雅,长短合宜。我喜欢的萧伯纳、切斯特顿,还有阿加莎婆婆,无不如此。很高兴又遇到了毛姆,有机会读读原文看吧!文中卡塔丽娜一家的市井生活有烟火气,女修道院主和主教的言行又充满宗教的严肃,甚至还有圣母的神秘和慈悲,切换和结合得非常之好。有的人擅长写绅士淑女,却只能写绅士淑女。毛姆笔下的小人物小而不丑,女修道院主和主教等高贵而有缺点的人也很鲜活。可见作者对人物有爱。 毛姆的警句很多,不像王尔德那样闪闪发光,而是都融合在文中,让人分不清是作者的智慧还是书中人的俏皮,只觉得读来十分适意。还记得《剧院》中女主的哲学感悟吗?好像满满是她个人的感情色彩,又好像真是那么回事。本书中对宗教、文学、爱情,还有语言的感慨,也都如此。最后关于“天主的幽默”,很大胆,但是跟希腊的“盲目的命运”和“得尔斐的神谕”不同,所谓用谜语让人误解,又得到有益的教化这样,还是悲天悯人的情怀。

《刀锋》写一个人人得其所哉的故事,《月亮与六便士》和《人性的枷锁》基本上也是皆大欢喜。本书也差不多。中间转折,卡塔丽娜从民女变成名伶,别开生面。让我想到《剧院》里的朱莉娅。戏剧人生,比起民女、修女和主妇,更适合可爱的卡塔丽娜。当然作者没有让这虚构的少女改变历史,也没让朱莉娅当哲学家,这正是对人物恰如其分的爱呢。 毛姆是多喜爱西班牙啊。既有对场景的描摹,又有对文学作品《堂吉诃德》的致敬,更不用说对西班牙语的格外赞美。有机会想领略一下西班牙的历史和文艺。

第22卷 第4期 零陵师范高等专科学校学报 Vol. 22 No.4 2001年10月 Journal of Lingling Teachers College Oct. 2001 78 论毛姆的绅士情结* 边冬燕 (北京师范大学中文系,北京 100875) 摘 要:通过对毛姆的作品的分析,发现毛姆的绅士情结主要来自其文化生存环境和他内在的精神追求。文章指出这个两个方面是深深的矛盾着的。  关键词:绅士情结;英国文学;毛姆 中图分类号:I106.4 文献标识码:A 文章编号:1008-1720(2001)04-0078-03    作为20世纪英国最负盛名的小说家,毛姆是当之无 愧的。他观察世人的角度是奇特的,坐在英国文化背景之上,毛姆犀利的看着世人,尽管他过着世上最矛盾的生活。在斑驳异趣的毛姆小说中,你总能感觉到他摆脱不掉的英伦绅士气质和一颗耽于飘荡世俗之外的心。  毛姆对于“绅士”二字的情有独钟,在他的许多小说里都有体现。无论是直露或者是暗隐在文字之外,毛姆总试图通过他的叙述向世人展示他的对于绅士世界的体味和感悟。绅士作为英国社会最突出的特征,深深植入毛姆的内心世界。然而,毛姆本人的经历又使他想摆脱这种绅士氛围的纠缠。笔者认为:绅士作为一种文化现象(现实因素),与毛姆的内心世界进行着交锋,使他陷入矛盾与痛苦之中。  一  在他大多数作品中,毛姆大量的描绘了一些虚伪的绅士。这些绅士,仪表堂堂,穿着考究,然而却是衣冠禽兽。小说《A friend in need》中的Burton老绅士,笑容慈祥,温文尔雅,并且其孱弱的身体总能激起人们的同情心。然而,这位在别人眼里走路都怕踩死蚂蚁的绅士,亲手杀死了他的朋友。Burton先生名义上帮助他一个穷困潦倒的朋友在自己的公司谋职。实际上公司既没空位,Burton先生也不想帮他,却故意让朋友为这个不存在的职位丧了命。更让人惊异的是Burton先生谈及此事不仅毫无悔意,而且深为自己的做法感到自豪。  《人性的枷锁》使毛姆一举成名,然而它存在的意义,无论是对于毛姆本人,还是对于人生的意义来说,都不仅仅是昙花一现的荣誉或者是流于凡世的畅销。它向人们展示了青年PHILLIPS的人生历程,他不做作,不骄矜,在人生的路途中真诚的活着。  *收稿日期:2001-05-20 更为关键的是:Phillips不是绅士,而且他鄙视绅士的作为。人生对于他来说是真实而纯洁的。所以,他选择了和那个时代背道而驰的路。正是怀有了对于人生的真诚和对于人性优美的向往,Phillips鄙视乡绅伯父的虚伪。坎特伯雷的公学是培养绅士的地方,因而,在Phillips的眼睛里,它是邪恶而没有生气的。伦敦会计所虚伪的绅士环境也是他极力摆脱的。甚至他所期盼的爱情,也在女人爱慕绅士的虚荣中遭到无数次的打击。他所需要的真诚的人生理念,纯洁的爱情,都残酷的破灭了。 但是Phillips最后找到了自己的所愿。这是自我对于绅士社会的胜利。带有毛姆色彩的Phillips拼命偏离绅士社会,而宁愿安于推销员这样平淡度日的生活,这说明毛姆看中的是心灵的安宁。Phillips某种程度上就是毛姆,他渴望像Phillips那样的生活,平淡而安然。尽管他对所处的环境充满了失望和不屑,然而对于现实生活中的毛姆来说,却永远做不到Phillips那样的选择。  毛姆在Phillips那里做了人生最初对于绅士社会的叛逆。虽然蜚声文坛,可是他并没有因此而完全融入到绅士社会里去,相反,它表现在《月亮和六便士》《刀锋》里的形象意味着他的心离绅士社会越来越远。  《月亮和六便士》虽然取材于保罗。高更的经历,但它同样体现着毛姆本人的人生追求。斯特里克兰德过的是典型绅士生活。可是他并不能适应觥筹交错的社交生活,在名流绅士之中,他像个呆子。40岁的时候,他离开那个社会,寻求艺术上的安慰。在遥远的塔西提,他将沉积在心中的郁闷和激情一并爆发在对艺术的狂热追求之中,达到了艺术的高峰。而现实中的毛姆却永远不可能做第二个斯特克里兰德,他曾不止一次的对罗宾说,自己太不幸福,太不幸福。这种喟叹大约就包含了自己不能完全逾矩的遗憾。无论如何,Phillips有一个亮丽的开始,斯特克丽兰德所带给他的只是一种怅然与落寞,尽管厌倦了绅士生活,可现实中他还得做得像样,在某种程度上来说,这由不得他。毛姆是个天然矛盾的人物,斯特克丽兰德使他更进一步的靠近了矛盾的深渊。  在《刀锋》里,莱雷的探索则使毛姆有了暂时的心理安宁。莱雷由于参加了战争,目睹了死亡,使他在看待他所处的上流社会的时候,带有了一种不完满感。战争中所受到的巨大的生死震动使他再也不能回到战前的上流社会的生活情境中去。他在力图寻找一种终极关怀,使自己的心灵获得真正的安宁,彻底摆脱生存环境带给他的逆反力。为了寻求终极关怀,莱雷离开了家乡,离开了他心爱的姑娘,毅然走遍天下,寻找人生的终极关怀。莱雷终于在东方文化中找到了自己的信仰,这使他笑着面对人生,成为了美国街头上的一个出租汽车司机。  二  毛姆的矛盾,使得他不可能做莱雷和斯特克里兰德那样彻底的叛逆者。一方面,毛姆认识到现实的所谓绅士环境虚伪,肮脏,并且想极力的摆脱它,但是另一方

《面纱》读后感 本文是关于读后感的,仅供参考,如果觉得很不错,欢迎点评和分享。 《面纱》读后感 文/雷奥 ——那描画的面纱,芸芸众生称之为,生活。 读完这本书我有好多好多话想说。《面纱》是英国作家威廉· 萨摩赛特·毛姆的作品,是以前比我年长的朋友推荐给我的“女孩最值得读的书”,直到上一星期我才想起来读它。我是一个不怎么读书的人,本学期我只读过两本书,如果你是个爱读书的人,那我要向你学习;如果你也像我一样不爱读书,那我建议你从情节更有趣的书读起,当你已经感受到了读书的快感,你就可以读一些更深层次的书,比如我这学期开始读了一本《暗杀大师》,它能帮助我习惯读书的感觉,让我可以过渡到对我来说更难理解的书目。但最主要的是要读完,只单单翻几页是感受不到著作的伟大的。很明显,读书能给我们的学习和生活带来很多,只有亲身经历过你才能感受到。 回到书中的内容,书中对于“面纱”的解释是广义的,从我的理解,第一层面纱就是故事一开始凯蒂和汤森的婚外情。凯蒂冲动之下嫁给了沃尔特,却因为太过仓促,凯蒂并不了解自己的未婚夫,就连自己都不能说服自己嫁给沃尔特的原因,所以她更是想不到婚姻之后给他们带来的各种不和谐。凯蒂热情浪漫,沃尔特沉默寡言;凯蒂渴望幽默风趣,沃尔特生性腼腆无趣。凯蒂喜欢有风度有魅力的绅士,

沃尔特长相一般不通人情,他显然完全不符合凯蒂的期望,所以凯蒂对他没有一点爱。但是作为他的妻子,她要勉强自己被他爱着,陪着他做她自己不喜欢的事情,假装对他的生活充满兴致。这便是凯蒂为自己蒙上的一层面纱,也是接下来种种不幸的开端。 第二层面纱来自于汤森,他在凯蒂的眼里是一个完美的情人,英俊绅士充满热情,事业很成功,而且也十分疼爱凯蒂,在他的眼里凯蒂看到了未来。然而他的表相却只是对他实质的一种讽刺,他爱慕虚荣,花言巧语,所谓的成功乃是依靠妻子得来的,他成天只顾将注意力放在自己的精致打扮上,从而用它来吸引女孩子,成为沾花惹草的资本。得知事情败露的汤森却只是丢下凯蒂,将自己置身事外,害怕这些丑闻会成为自己登上总督位置的绊脚石,他早已忘记了当初和凯蒂远走高飞的誓言,因为他不想失去妻子这跟稻草。汤森凭着他强大的哄骗技巧将凯蒂骗到手,满足了自己的欲望,却全然不顾这一举动强烈的影响了其他几个人的生活轨迹。这是一张很随意,却又十分有危害性的面纱。 第三层面纱是属于沃尔特的,沃尔特在这本书里是一个可怜的角色,即使是临死之前也没有得到妻子的一点爱或者一滴眼泪。但是沃尔特并不傻,他一直是最清楚的那个,她知道妻子嫁给他不是因为爱他,也知道妻子不喜欢他过于亲密的接触她,他可以容忍妻子不爱他,但是他绝对接受不了背叛。当他面纱被揭开的那刻,即使他是多么的无情和残忍,至少对于我来说也只有惋惜和同情。他将妻子带到霍乱横行的湄潭府,从此以后他和她之间不再有爱,但这并不能说服他,

Somerset Maugham who was a famous British. His short stories mainly portrayed the British people’s life domestic and overseas. The ideas of escaping of the Western modern civilization and rebuilding of spiritual home, the pursuit of freedom and spiritual redemption found their vivid expression in most of his works. In the story Mr. Know All, the author created some figures full of flesh and blood by the vivid description of appearances, words and the unexpected plot. Like the narrator, Mr. Kelade and Mr. Ramsay. Through these remarkable distinctive figures he criticized the arrogance, vanity and selfishness in the human nature, specifically the narrator’s bia s and Mr. Kelade’s conceit and vulgarity. Additionally, he expressed the eagerness of Mr. Kelade to search for a sense of belonging. The story mainly tells about narrator’s experience on an on a ocean going liner sailing from America to Japan on the Pacific Ocean. The narrator had to share a cabin with a stranger Max Kelada who was not a British as the narrator had expected him to be despite he indeed has a British passport.
