二内容摘要

This activity offers students chances to practice a reading skill—induction and a writing skill—deduction. Students are supposed to induce the spirits of the celebrities, hard working, never giving up etc., by reading the introduction of them and write an essay based on the essence by citing the celebrity as an example. Students will learn to write narration with comments, which is widely used in essay writing.

By taking this activity, students will be able to

1)induce the spirits of a celebrity from his/her introduction;

2)write narration with comments.

2活动步骤

Preparation steps

The teacher asks students to work in pairs and search for an introduction of a celebrity on Wikipedia before class. Each pair should print two copies of the introduction and bring them to class.

In-class steps

1)Each student reads the introduction of the celebrity he / she has found with his / her partner

and works out one spirit of the celebrity from it. (8 minutes)

2)Each student turns to his / her partner and discusses the spirit with him / her to see to it that

they have not come up with the same one. If they got the same spirit, either of them should come up with another one. (4 minutes)

3)Students in pairs exchange the spirit and read the introduction to figure out the backup for the

spirit that has been worked out by his/her partner. (10 minute)

4)The teacher guides students to look though Text A and learn about the way to write narration

with comments. (8 minute)

5)Each student write an essay on the spirit his / her partner has induced by narrating the

experiences of the celebrity and making comments on them. (20 minutes)

The teacher should be observing the interaction and offer help when necessary. The teacher should also monitor and supervise students to ensure that they are truly involved in the activity as required and communicate in English. During the whole process of the activity, the teacher should take notes of any problem rises and cope with it in later class period.

Students would also be evaluated by

① The essence they work out (10%);

② The backup they find out (20%);

③ The essay they write (50%);

④ Self-evaluation (20%);

4活动效果

It may be difficult for students to write narration with comments without any backup and the topics given are probably not familiar to them or favored by them. This activity offers more autonomy to students that both the topic and the backup worked out by themselves. Meanwhile, they have obtained enough materials to refer to while writing, which solve students’ most tough problems in writing—having trouble getting started, coming across a mental block and having trouble coming up with relevant details to support a possible thesis. Writing, in this way, becomes easy and enjoyable.
