A cute mother,Mrs. Dashwood
Mother is an eternal theme.They often reveal their warmth and tender when people talk to their mother,even can't help themselves smiling.In the world,there are many kinds of mothers,some strict,some loving,some silent,some optimistic.etc,they always love their children whatever they are.There is a verse said by Tagore:Mother,you are the perfect match of mother,intimate and friend!This is the greatest mother.Here is a good example,Mrs. Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility,written by Jane Austen,an English novelist,is a cute mother.She is a good mother to care about her children and a nice friend to understand them as well.
Mother is the first teacher of children,so she should pay an attention to taking a good example for them,which can express mother's concern with the education of children.Mrs.Dashwood did a good job for herself and children."The constant attention of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dashwood to his wishes,which proceeded not merely from interest,but from goodness of heart,gave him every degree of solid comfort which his age could receive."(P.1) As the niece,also a child of the old man who is the owner of the Norland Park,Mrs. Dashwood positively cared for and looked after
well the old man instead of treating him coldly and rudely like many other women,which taught her children that the younger generation should have the filial piety for the elder and respect for them.Meantime,she told her children to be a polite and a cultivated person."So acutely did Mrs. Dashwood feel this ungracious behaviour,and so earnestly did she despise her daughter-in-law for it"(P.5) Her daughter can learn to be a good personality from the hatred and scorn feelings for bad person of Mrs. Dashwood.
Mrs. Dashwood was afraid of having no comfortable life for her daughters after Mr. Dashwood died and always wanted to seek a cosy life for them and prevented them from being mistreated by others."Mrs. Dashwood had been informed by her husband of the solemn promise on the part of his son in their favour,which gave comfort to his last earthly reflections.She doubted the sincerity of this assurance no more than he had doubted it himself,and she thought of it for her daughters' sake with satisfaction,though as for herself she was persuaded that a much smaller provision than 70001,would support her in affluence."(P.14) But her daughter-in-law "took the first opportunity of affronting her on the occasion "(P.24) and often said something bad about her daughters,finally she couldn't tolerated and left with the Norland Park with her daughters for "Mrs. Dashwood could neither pretend to be unconscious, nor endeavor to be calm.She gave her an answer which marked her contempt,and instantly
left the room,resolving that,whatever might be the inconvenience or expense of so sudden a removal,her beloved Elinor should not be exposed another week to such insinuations."(P.25) Maybe this seemed to be serious,but Mrs. Dashwood was just like the old hen in the "Eagle-grabs-chicks game",which is that the eagle would grab the chickens to eat while the hen protects them,it was so cute of her.Mrs. Dashwood did vigorous effort to create a free and relaxed life for them and encouraged her daughters to make friends with others after coming to the new place and starting a new life.She didn't restrict the activity of daughters provided they could enjoy a good time,which is entirely different from those whom request their children not to go somewhere or do something.When Lady Middleton invited girls to have dinner with her,"and Marianne,though always unwilling to join any of their parties,was persuaded by her mother,who could not bear to have her seclude herself from any chance of amusement,to go likewise."(P.163)Mrs.Dashwood caught chances to make her daughters have more social contact with friends and encourged them to experience different feelings and be farsighted by going around a bit.Therefore,after knowing Mrs.Jennings' invitation with her two daughters to go home,she "persuaded that such an excursion both her daughters,and perceiving through much the heart of Marianne was in it,would not hear of their declining the offer upon HER account;insisted on their both accepting it directly."(P.177),even though she herself was
loath to part with them.How sweetheart she was!She always kept thinking about her daughters even if they weren't by her sides,therefore,she was so anxious when she heard Marianne was very sick,"had no voice to inquire after her,no voice even for Elinor"(P.394),but after knowing that Marianne was Ok,she "shedding tears of joy,though still unable to speak,embraced Elinor again and again,turning from her at intervals to press Colonel Brandon's hand,with a look which spoke at once her gratitude."(P.394)At this moment,an excited and moving scene was showing.Mrs. Dashwood conducted as a child and revealed her sorrow and joy naturally without pretence,which can be seen that she was so sincere and cute.It's obvious that Mrs. Dashwood are really concerned with her daughters' character,social life and knowledge.
Mrs. Dashwood wasn't only a considerate mother,but also a more liberal friend for she understood feelings of daughters,trusted and supported them,never forced them to do something they hate.Although she felt the hidden love of Elinor for Edward and realized the crazy love of Marianne for Willoughby,she never stopped or interferred them at her request based on her own opinions,on the contrary,she was quite happy to receive if her daughters was satisfied,even encouraged them to pursue happiness bravely."Like him!"replied her mother with a smile."I can feel no sentiment of approbation inferior to love."(P.17)She was just a close friend and supported her friend,Elinor's choice when she said this words
with confident and naughty.What's more,"Mrs. Dashwood was acting on motives of policy as well as pleasure in the frequency of her visit at Delaford;for her wish of bringing Marianne and Colonel Brandon together was hardly less earnest,though rather more liberal than what John had expressed.It was now her darling object."(P.448)At this moment,she wasn't a mother any longer,but an intimate who knew clearly the condition of two lovers and positively helped her friend,Marianne to get happiness,like a young girl full of passion and energy.How interesting she was!
As with marriage of sons and daughters,"some mothers might have encouraged the intimacy from motives of interest"(P.15)such as the mother of Edward,always requested Edward to marry with "Miss Morton he would have a woman of higher rank and larger fortune"(P.443),even threatened him to cut off their mother and child relationship.Finally,the results brought by her own decisions was very terrible."and she has actually been bribing one son with a thousand a -year,to do the very deed which she disinherited the other for intending to do.She will hardly be less hurt,I suppose,by Robert's marrying Lucy,than she would have been by your marrying her."(P.433) While Mrs. Dashwood like an intimate who are aware of friends' deep secret and feelings,was quite minded and didn't decide her daughters' marrige based on common view,all decision of her centered on the happiness of her daughters."It was contrary to every doctrine of her's that difference of fortune should keep any couple asunder who were
attracted by resemblance of disposition."(P.15)Therefore,she was very excited that Edward released his marriage with Lucy and chose to live with his real lover,Elinor.On the other hand,she deeply felt the misery of Marianne caused by the betraying from Willoughby and blamed herself for the misery." 'Rather say your mother's imprudence,my child,'said Mrs. Dashwood;she must be answerable."(P.416)Everytime she conducted as a close friend and showed that she really knew and understood the sorrow and joy of her daughters,no blame,no complain,no coldness, she just gave her concern,understanding and support to her daughters all the time and companied them silently and sincerely.
Besides,Mrs. Dashwood was romantic,optimistic woman and treated others sincerely and passionately,which made her cuter.She was willing to see her daughters enjoy the love and happiness,"To her it was but the natural consequence of a strong affection in a young and ardent mind."(P.61)So she can feel the sorrow and joy of her daughters and encouraged them to live happily and optimistically."Remember.my love,that you are not seventeen.It is yet too early in life to despair of such a happiness."(P.19)Husband died and she had to support the family by her own,the life isn't so comfortable,but she never worried and complaited about that and treated people by side with open arms.When she knew that Edward would be marry with Lucy and Edward visited her,she "conforming,as she trusted,to the wishes of that daughter,by whom she then
meant in the warmth of her heart to be guided in everything,met him with a look of forced complacency,gave him her hand,and wished him joy."(P.424)She always treats and accepts with everything with breadth of mind,which makes her look charming.
As a mother,Mrs. Dashwood was very considerate about all sides of her daughters like other mothers in the world,while she can understand and support her daughters like an intimate all the time,which is beyond many mothers' thought and ability.This is the reason why they can live and communicate with each other without gap and misunderstanding and indicate strong family affection naturally.Maybe women who have already been mothers or are going to be mothers can learn from Mrs. Dashwood,the cute mother to be a good mother and good friend of your children.

The book I have read named Sense and Sensibility, which was written by Jean Austen. Jean, a women writer, was rare at seventeenth century. People knew her from a book, which was written by her nephew fifty years later, about her life. Then her works was gradually highly praised by many people and had a great influence on the following centuries. The novel is about the daughters of Miss Dashwoods. After theur father dies, the family estate passes to their elder brother John and the girls and their mother lead a difficult life. The story happened in the end of nineteenth century. It was a story about Miss Dash woods seeking for love and finally living a happy marriage. The novel follows the sisters to their new home, where the romantic stories happen in two of the girls. And make a evident contrast in their characters. Elinor, who was the sister, was a girl of sense. While her sister—Marianne was a girl of sensibility. Einor understood the world by sense. And her sister understood the world by sensibility or sentimentality. Through the event in the novel, Elinor and Marianne find a balance between sense and sensibility. First I want to talk about the writing skills of this novel---irony. Here is an example in which Austen describes the first impression created by the arrival of the Miss Steels at Barton Park: The young ladies arrived: their appearance was by no means ungentle or unfashionable. Their dress was very smart, their manners very civil, they were delighted with the house, and in raptures with the furniture, and they happened to be so doatingly fond of children that Lady Middleton’s good opinion was engaged in their favor before they had been an hour at the Park. She declared them to be very agreeable girls indeed, which for her ladyship was enthusiastic admiration. How can we make of Miss Steels? Are we simply thought highly of them as Miss Middleton? They were first thought to be pleasant, clever, well-mannered girl. Yet Austen is in fact using a sharp ironic wit to highlight their shortcomings. It is that first phrase “their appearance was by no means ungentle or unfashionable” that begin to reveal. Why has Austen choose to use double negative here?
