51. Treasure hunts(寻宝)have excited people''''s imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson''''s Treasure Island.Kit Williams,a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues(线索)found in a book when he wrote a children''''s story,Masquerade,in 1979.The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “red herrings”,or false clues,to mislead them.

Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years.Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time,he found it by logic(逻辑),not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words:“One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII''''s six wives.Even here, however,Williams had succeeded in misleading him.Ken knew

that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridge shire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been

digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him.He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill,in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses

in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.

Even then his search had not come to an end.It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to

write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there.Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982,he found the treasure. It was worth £3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable. What is the most important clue in the story to help Ken Robertsfind the hare?

It would be difficult to have a society like ours without public goods such as defense, transportation, and other services.

A public good is one that a person can use without reducing the use of it for another person. One of the best examples of a public good

is national defense. One person can benefit from our national defense without reducing another person''s benefits. In fact, it is difficult to keep any person in our society from enjoying the benefits of national defense.

The market system does not work well in producing public goods. This is because a person who refuses to pay for a public good cannot be kept from using it. Suppose that the neighbors in a high crime area decide to hire a police force. Each neighbor, except Mrs. Smith, agrees to pay S 100 a year for it. Mrs. Smith refuses to pay because she knows that if all the others pay the $ 100, the police will guard the area anyway. So Mrs. Smith can enjoy the services of the police force without paying $100.The market system has no way to deal with this type of problem. For this reason, we cannot ask each person to make a direct payment in the form of product price. Therefore, we collect money for public goods by using taxes.(1). As you are students of English, it’s very possible that you’ll be interested in England. That’s where the language was first spoken. But England is often called by other names. This often confuses people and I wonder if you know what these names mean. So, now I would like to tell you about this matter of names. I believe that you have heard people use the names—England, Britain or Great Britain. Let’s see what each of these names means.

If you look at a map of Europe, you’ll see a group of islands—one

larger island off the northwest coast, one smaller and many tiny ones. These make up what is called the British Isles (不列颠群岛). The largest island of the British Isles is Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland (爱尔兰).

Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the Word “England” is used instead of “Britain”. Why so? In ancient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in These different countries spoke different language. Over many years the three countries became one. England is the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So the English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island. There’s another thing that confuses people: sometimes you may hear people say “the Untied Kingdom of Great

Britain and Northern Ireland”. That is o fficial name of the country. Northern Ireland is only one sixth of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of “England”, “Britain”, “Great Britain”, and “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. Now do you know what each of them means?(1). English was first spoken in ( )

A.

Britain

B.

England

C.

D. Ireland

(2). Britain is divided into( )

A.

England, Britain, and Wales

B.

England, Scotland, and Wales

C.

Wales, Scotland, and Great Britain

D. Great Britain, Wales, and Scotland

(3). According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

A.

Wales is the richest of the three

B.

Scotland is the largest of the three

C.

Sometimes English is used instead of Britain

D. Britain is the only name of the largest island of British Isles

(4). The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is ( )

A.

part of Britain

B.

part of British Isles

C.

the official name of the whole country England

D. the largest country of all mentioned in the passage

(5). Which of the following is an independent country?

大学英语期末考试写作必背范文

Is It Better to Buy or Rent? The price of housing has kept increasing in recent years, which causes a big headache for people living in cities. A lot of people cannot afford to own a real estate property, so they choose to rent instead of buying an apartment. This group of people does not want to bear burden of mortgage so that they opt for a practical solution. Renting an apartment makes them have a place to stay and thus they can focus on work as well as personal life. Some other people, however, believe that an apartment owned by themselves makes them feel safe and relieved, so they are willing to sacrifice some other aspects of life to borrow money from the bank to buy an apartment. As far as I am concerned, to buy or to rent is all about it will be better to rent first and wait for the good timing when the price is going down to buy. Topic 2: On Job Hopping It seems that nowadays, very few young people are willing to stay in a job position for long, let alone for the whole life. They change jobs constantly. This results from several factors. Firstly, young people like fresh things, and it is easy for them to be fed up with old routine work. So when they stay in a position for a while, the excitement will fade out. They are quite realistic and not willing to waste time in a job they are not interested in. Thirdly, some young people are not satisfied with current salary, believing they deserve better pay. In my opinion, constant job hopping will not benefit young people in their career development. Every job has its own merits and young people can certainly learn something from it as long as they are patient and wise enough. Every job experience is valuable down the career path and young people shall be able to make the most of it. Topic 3: Online Social Network Modern people will be no stranger to online social network. Facebook, Renren and Kaixin001 are probably the most populous networks among Chinese netizen. In these networks, people interact with each other, be it a stranger or a friend, and have a lot of fun in the virtual world. This phenomenon could be a result of the fast development of the Internet and people's great interest of the virtual world. I think it is a very good new platform for people to keep in touch. But it should not be overused. Firstly, some people are addicted to it, which makes them want to get online 24 hours a day. When people spend too much time on one thing, they will naturally have not enough time for study and for work. Secondly, online social network change people's behavior of interacting with others. In virtual world, you just click the mouse and type in words instead of having a face-to-face talk. This will not benefit people's long term friendship, and even harm their interpersonal relationships in real world.
