Mark Eklund was in the first third grade class I taught at Saint Mary's School in Morris, Minn. He was neat in appearance, but had that happy-to-be-alive

attitude that made even his occasional mischievousness (恶作剧) delightful. Mark liked talking. I had to remind him again and again that talking without permission was not acceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was his sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving: “Thank you for correcting me, sister!”

One day in class, I asked pupils to list the names of the other students on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then I told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and I listed what everyone else had said about that student. On Monday I gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling.

Several years later, after I returned from vacation, my father met me at the airport.

“Mark was killed in the war,” he said.“ The funeral is tomorrow, and his parents would like it if you could attend.”

I had never seen a serviceman in

a military coffin (军用棺材) before. As I stood there, Mark's father said, “We want to show you something. They found this on Mark when h e was killed.” He took a wallet out of his pocket. Opening the billfold (皮夹), he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. “Thank you so much for doing that,” Mark's mother said. “As you can see, Mark treasured it.”That's when I finally sat down and cried. I cried for Mark and for all

his friends who would never see him again.

51.What troubles the teacher was that ________.

A.Mark didn't do well in his lessons B.Mark talked too much in class

C.Mark was badly dressed

D.Mark was often late for class

52.What was the author's attitude towards Mark?

A.She didn't like him because he didn't obey the rules.

B.She thought he was a bad student.

C.She liked him though he was naughty.

D.She thought he was ready to correct his own mistakes. 53.What did the author ask the students to write on the paper? A.Mistakes each student had made.

B.Things each student liked doing.

C.The habits of each student.

D.The strong point of each student

54.Why did Mark's parents want the author to attend Mark's funeral? A.They wanted her to see Mark for the last time.

B.They wanted to show her the lists.

C.They wanted her to know how sad they were.

D.They wanted to thank her for what she had done for Mark.

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only

when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.

The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities, others lose heart at the first sight of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Since we can't remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do_so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.

55.People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because ________.

A.they regard working as their greatest enjoyment

B.they believe that work is superior to relaxation

C.they are traveling fast all the time

D.they are becoming busier with their work than ever before 56.According to the author, the most important character for a good manager is his ________. A.strong will to hold out stress

B.knowing the art of relaxation

C.high sense of responsibility D.having control over performance

57.Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the passage?

A.We can find quite a few ways to

avoid stress.

B.Stress is always harmful to people's health.

C.It's easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work. D.Different people can bear different amount of stress. 58.In the last sentence of the passage, “do so” refers to “________”.

A.expose ourselves to stress B.find ways to deal with stress C.remove stress from our lives D.establish links between diseases and stress

C

When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer's claims, the first step is to present the warranty, or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favor, assuming he or she has a just claim. Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker does

not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear” is better than “This stereo does not work”. The store manager may advice the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and firmly as possible. If a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go to a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumer's rights.

59. When a consumer finds that his or her in it, the first thing he or she should do is to ________.

A. complain personally to the manager

B. threaten to take the matter to court

C. write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchase

D. show some written proof of the purchase to the store

60. How can a consumer make his or her complaint more effective, according to the passage?

A. Explain exactly what is wrong with the item.

B. Threaten to take the seller to court.

C. Make polite and general statements about the problem.

D. Avoid having direct contact with the store manager.

61. According to the passage, which of the following is suggested as the last alternative that consumers may turn to?

A. Complain to the store manager in person.

B. Complain to the manufacturer.

C. Write a complaint letter to the manager.

D. Turn to the Consumers’ Rights Protection Organization for help.

62. The p hrase “live up to” in this context means ________.

A. meet the standard of

B.

realize the purpose of

C. fulfill the demands of

D. keep the promise of

D

Judging from recent surveys, most experts in sleep behavior agree that there is virtually an epidemic (流行病) of sleepiness in the nation. “I can't think of a single study that hasn't found Americans getting less sleep than they ought to,” says Dr. David. Even people who think they are sleeping enough would probably be better off with more rest.

The beginning of our sleep-deficit (睡眠不足) crisis can be traced to the invention of the light bulb a century ago. From diary entries and other personal accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries, sleep scientists have reached the conclusion that the average person used to sleep about 9.5 hours a night. “The best sleep habits once were forced on us, when we had nothing to do in the evening down on the farm, and it was dark.” By the 1950s and 1960s, that sleep schedule had been reduced dramatically, to between 7.5 and eight hours, and most people had to wake to an alarm clock. “People cheat on their sleep, and they don't even realize they're doing it,” says Dr. David. "They think they're okay because they can get by on 6.5hours, when they really need 7.5, eight or even more to feel ideally vigorous."

Perhaps the most merciless robber of sleep, researchers say, is the complexity (错综复杂的状态) of the day. Whenever pressures from work, family, friends and community mount, many people consider sleep the least expensive item on his programme. 'In our society, you're considered dynamic if you say you only need 5.5 hours' sleep. If you've got to get 8.5 hours, people think you lack drive and

ambition."

To determine the consequences of sleep deficit, researchers have put subjects through a set of psychological and performance tests requiring them, for instance, to add columns of numbers or recall a passage read to them only minutes earlier. "We've found that if you're in sleep deficit, performance suffers," says Dr. David. “Short-term memory is weakened, as are abilities to make decisions and to concentrate.”

63. People in the 18th and 19th centuries used to sleep about 9.5 hours a night because they had ______.

A. no drive and ambition

B. no electric lighting

C. the best sleep habits

D. nothing to do in the evening

64. According to Dr. David, Americans _______ .

A. are ideally vigorous even under the pressure of life

B. often neglect the consequences of sleep deficit

C. do not know how to relax themselves properly

D. can get by on 6.5 hours of sleep

65. Many Americans believe that _______ .

A. sleep is the first thing that can be sacrificed when one is busy

B. they need more sleep to cope with the complexities of everyday life

C. to sleep is something one can do at any time of the day

D. enough sleep promotes people's drive and ambition

66. It can be concluded from the passage that one should sleep as many hours as is necessary to ______ .

A. improve one's memory dramatically

B. be considered dynamic by other people

C. maintain one's daily schedule

D. feel energetic and perform adequately

E

Once it was possible to define male and female roles easily by the division of labor. Men worked outside the home and earned the income to support their families, while women cooked the meals and took care of the home and the children. These roles were firmly fixed for most people, and there was not much opportunity for women to exchange their roles. But by the middle of last century, men‘s and women’s roles were becoming less firmly fixed.

In the 1950s, economic and social success was the goal of the typical American. But in the 1960s a new force developed called the counterculture. The people involved in this movement did not value the middle-class American goals. The counterculture presented men and women with new role choices. Taking more interest in childcare, men began to share child-raising tasks with their wives. In fact, some young men and women moved to communal homes or farms where the economic and childcare responsibilities were shared equally by both sexes. In addition, many Americans did not value the traditional male role of soldier. Some young men refused to be drafted as soldiers to fight in the war in Vietnam.

In terms of numbers, the counterculture was not a very large group of people. But its influence spread to many parts of American society. Working men of all classes began to change their economic and social patterns. Industrial workers and business executives alike cut down on “overtime” work so that they could spend more leisure time with their families. Some doctors, lawyers, and teachers turned away from high paying situations to practice their professions in poorer neighborhoods.

In the 1970s, the feminist

movement,or women’s liberation, produced additional economic and social changes. Women of all ages and at all levels of society were entering the work force in greater numbers. Most of them still took traditional women’s jobs as public school teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. But some women began to enter traditionally male occupations:police work, banking, dentistry, and construction work. Women were asking for equal work, and equal opportunities for promotion.

Today the experts generally agree that important changes are taking place in the roles of men and women. Naturally, there are difficulties in adjusting to these transformations.

67.Which of the following best express the main idea of Paragraph 1?

A. Women usually worked outside the home for wages.

B. Men and women‘s roles were easily exchanged in the past.

C. Men’s roles at home were more firmly fixed than women’s.

D. Men and women’s roles were usually quite separated in the past.

68.In the passage the author proposes that the counterculture ________.

A. destroyed the United States.

B. transformed some American values.

C. was not important in the United States.

D. brought people more leisure time with their families.

69.It could be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. men and women will never share the same goals.

B. some men will be willing to exchange their traditional male roles.

C. most men will be happy to share some of the household responsibilities with their

wives.

D. more American households are headed by women than ever before.

70.The best title for the passage may be ________.
