Education: A Reflection of Society

Visiting schools anywhere in the world, you will probably notice a number of similarities. However, a school system in one country is not identical to the system in any other country. It cannot be exactly the same because each culture is different.

The educational system is a mirror that reflects the culture.

A case in point is that Japanese place importance on education but there are difficult exams for entrance to all better schools or universities. Results of these exams affect the entire family because there is high status or social position

for the whole family when the children have high test scores. Compared with Japan, education in the United States is also available to everyone, but not all schools are equal. It is Students themselves who decide if they go to college, no national exam determines this. On the other hand, there are problems with lack of discipline and with drugs and crime in some American schools.

It is clear that each educational system is a reflection of the larger culture-both positive and negative aspects of its economy values and social structure etc.

Overcrowding in Big Cities

Population growth is already causing unbelievable overcrowding. Due to this , many cities have problems with air pollution, disease, crime, traffic jam .Also, there isn't enough water, transportation or housing and even the worse, many people don't have access to health services or jobs.

Here are some creative solutions. First Garbage Collection, in some cities garbage is now recycled , which is not only good for the environment but provides jobs to the poorest people to improves their lives. Besides, Transportation is improved by affording an unusual system of buses in the center lane of wide major streets, which makes commuting more pleasant and also helps to solve the problem of air pollution. An agricultural operation and green space program also play their parts .

Clearly, overcrowding in big cities worldwide is the cause of serious problems. However, careful planning and creative thinking can lead to solutions to many of them. Curitiba is truly a "symbol of the possible."

My View on Job-hopping

People have different attitudes towards their work. Some prefer to stick to one occupation as their lifelong career. These people are of the opinion that one can never do his work well unless he is devoted to only one job in his lifetime. So if one changes his job frequently, he will

not get the necessary experience needed in his work.

Others, on the other hand, like to change their jobs at times. In their opinion, people work in order to make more money. If they have a chance to get a better paid job, they will certainly try to get this chance. Besides, if a person does only one job all his life, he will certainly be bored with it.

My idea is that interest is the most important if one wants to excel others in his job. So if a person is not interested in his job, job hopping is normal and even necessary. Otherwise, he will suffer from his work, and inevitably, he is not likely to succeed in his career.

How to Succeed in a Job Interview

Nowadays both the interviewee and the interviewer are attaching more and more importance to job interview. As far as the interviewers are concerned, they tend to feel it unscientific to evaluate the competence of the interviewees by just reading their written materials, such as the application forms, self-introductions, etc. A face to face interviewing is more reliable and informative. As far as the interviewees are concerned, they think that they also have the right to get to know the employer and the company in which they are going to work, e.g. what work they are going to do, how much money they can get etc.

For example, a clean and tidy appearance will surely attract the attention of the interviewers; a graceful manner is easy to leave a good impression on your would be boss. Nevertheless, be sure not to overstate but stick to reality; show your keen enthusiastic about the job and your strong desire for obtaining the job all the way.

Is Money All Powerful?

Many people believe that money is universal and it can make the mare go. But they do not realize that there are many things in this world which money cannot buy. For example, if a millionaire is on the verge of death because of a fatal disease, can he buy his health back with his wealth? The answer is of course “no”. Indeed, money cannot buy some of the most valuable things in the world such as honesty, loyalty,

friendship, etc.

It is also true that money cannot make a happy day long, nor can it make the unhappy day short. We sometimes hear such strange stories: some people once had a very happy family when they were poor and hard at work. At that time they helped each other and cared about each other. But when they became rich, disasters get in. Either the husband or the wife ceased to be faithful. From then on, they began to suffer from a tragic family life filled with hatred, quarrels, violence and sorrow. From such stories, we can draw the conclusion that money can not ensure happiness.

What is more, there is still another thing which money cannot buy: true love, which is based on nothing but love itself. An old man can get a very young wife because he is rich but it will be difficult to win her heart. This is another good case to show that money is not all-powerful.

Gong on a Self-Tour or a Package Tour?

When it comes to traveling, some people will choose to go on a self-tour while others want to go on a package tour.

Those who decide to go on a self-tour argue that they love the freedom and flexibility when they travel by themselves---you can stay longer if you enjoy the beautiful scenery there. Furthermore, you will have more chances to communicate with local residents or other tourists from all over the world, which will be an exciting and unforgettable experience. Those who prefer gong on a package tour maintain that you don not have to worry about time, route and accommodation, which enables you to concentrate on the beautiful scenery and enchanting local custom. Moreover, it is safer and less time-consuming than self-tour.

In my opinion, I should go on a self-tour whenever I go traveling. To begin with, I want to visit not only the scenic spots but also the common people . Second, I enjoy making friends along the route; the communication with them came across during traveling are part of my life experiences. I am planning to visit Tibet this summer, and it certainly will be a self-tour.

How to Improve Our Writing Ability

When talking about learning English language, we always dream of improving our writing ability in an efficient way. I hope the following methods, based on my personal experience, can be helpful to all of you.

On the one hand, we should have a good mastery of English grammar and then learn the theory of writing by hear: We can learn important notions such as organization, unity and coherence. On the other hand, we should practice as much as possible. First of all we can practice writing single sentences, and gradually we can move on to paragraphs and passages. After that we should seek advice form teachers. After teacher’s correction we can know our weak points and then make up for them. Only in this way can we master the writing skills step by step.

From the above analysis, the best way to improve our writing ability is to combine theory with practice.

It is very common to see people ride motorcycles or even drive private cars and more and more families have telephone, computers and air-conditioners.

The modernization of family life brings us convenience and comfort. One may enjoy TV or radio programs, communicate with his friends through telephone or work with his computer while his washing machine, refrigerator and air-conditioner are running. And by car or motorcycle one can quickly reach wherever he wants to go.

In spite of this, these modern facilities also bring disadvantages. For example, radiation from TV sets and computers is harmful to our health; improper driving of cars and motorcycles becomes the major cause of traffic accidents. The quietness of a

family is often disturbed by a false dialing or an unwelcome phone call. But it is believed that these disadvantages will be disposed of with the improvement of modernization and our life will be more healthy and more comfortable.

My Favorite Activity

When asked about my favorite leisure time activity, I will not hesitate a moment to say it is public speaking. Whenever I have spare time, I will practice it, which makes me happy and excited, I first took part in a speech contest when I was in junior school. Although I have not got any prize that time, I began to love public speaking from then on.

Although some friends don’t like public speaking, I have been practicing it for several years. The reasons why I enjoy it so much are as follows. Firstly, after several years’ practice I am more confident, enterprising and easy going than before. In the second place, the hobby has helped me make good friends with many teachers and schoolmates. Moreover, it has made me think of various essential problems in depth--- I have become more careful, reasonable and responsible.

Just like many other people, public speaking has become part of my life. I believe I will enjoy it forever, and recommend it to others.

How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities In the past decades, there has been a tendency that more and more people flood into big cities from the countryside, which causes serious housing problems. To solve the problem the careful planning of the government and the cooperation of all the citizens are both needed.

On the one hand, the government should have an overall planning of urban development so that the reasonable and scientific disposition of every inch of land is at hand. Through turning the backward areas into advanced theme communities, we can significantly elevate the potential value of our land. On the other hand, the citizens should make great efforts to cooperate with government by moving

according to the overall planning, raising constructive suggestion or taking part in the actual construction.

All in all, only when the government ant the citizens join their hands in efforts, can we hope to solve the housing problem satisfactorily.

Getting to Know the World outside the Campus

As university students, we should attach much importance to the knowledge of the world outside our campus. In this way, not only can we be aware of what the society requires us to do after graduation, we can also be made to improve our efficiency and enrich our campus life. Once we step into the society, we will be able to adapt ourselves to the new but sharply different environment more quickly than otherwise.

There is more than one way through which we can get to know the outside world. Firstly, we may get updated information from books, periodicals, newspapers, radios, TV and via Internet. Secondly, we may get in touch with society by doing part-time jobs, such as tutoring, working in a restaurant, or delivering newspapers.

As for me, I will not miss a single opportunity to get to know the society. As summer vacation is around the corner, I plan to be a volunteer to provide service to the society. Although I won’t be paid, the most important thing is that I can learn a lot about society.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Private Tutoring

Of course, there are advantages in private tutoring. That is why parents employ tutors for their children. First, many parents, for various reasons, missed the chance of obtaining a good education. When their children meet with difficulties in study, they are helpless. Thus, private tutoring is the only solution. And as private tutoring is usually one-to-one, the teacher knows the weak points as well as strong points of the pupil, and teaching is, in most cases, directly to the point. Private tutoring benefits a lot of pupils.

On the other hand, private tutoring certainly has its own disadvantages. For one thing, it takes up so much of the pupil’s time that they can hardly find enough time for rest and entertainment, which are essential for their physical and mental health. For another, some teachers, busy “shifting” from one family to another, tend to neglect their regular teaching duties. What is more, some teachers are eager to help pupils to do well on the test, offering the so-called tips for test-taking rather than help them acquire what is most needed.

As I see it, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Greater emphasis should be laid on classroom teaching and practice, on the improvement of teaching quality and on the tapping of the pupil’s potential. Only in this way can a new generation be healthily brought up.
