People say that “travel is the best teacher”and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming Dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587—1641). His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encouraged a love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country s land and geography.

Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age. When he was 18, however,Xu's father died. He now was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as tradition required. But his mother refused to keep him at home. For many Chinese families, rice is an important part of almost every meal. Where does rice come from? Yuan Longping and his team work to grow rice on the farmland.

Food was a big problem in China in the past. This is because China had 22% of the world's population, but only 7% of its farmland. In the 1960s, China suffered (遭受) a serious famine. Millions of people died because they had no food. As an agronomy (农学)teacher, Yuan was very sad to see this. “How can I help them have enough food?” he thought. He decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice (杂交水稻). It has high output.

At that time, other scientists didn t think hybrid rice had much value. But Yuan and his team worked on it every day. They took very good care of their rice seeds.

At last, in 1973, they grew a new type of hybrid rice. This rice is strong. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can fight disease, too. Its output is much greater than common kinds of rice. With the new type, about 70,000,000 people could have food every year!

On April 19th, 2019, a pottery(陶器) show was held at Wuhan Optical Valley Experimental School. Many pieces of pottery in different sizes were shown at the school. Some were a bit broken, but all of them were beautiful works of art created by the students.

At the end of last year, the school started a project that called on teachers to collect disused pieces of pottery which people don't want them anymore or broken pieces of pottery from the countryside. So far, they have collected about 3,000 pieces.

Some researchers explain how most people form their social groups with people of their age. Especially, as children and teenagers, even adults, people make their friends based

on distance more than anything else. Even in a classroom, the students may not make friends with those who have similar personalities(性格) and interests. It's the people they really sit next to. Clearly, who stands nearest to you has the greatest influence on you.

Over the past ten months, I've paid Ryan, a famous writer of several bestselling books, to help me with the book I'm writing. Working with him has shown me just how low my standards for my work are. For example, every time I send him a draft(草稿), he shows me how it could be much better, and he holds me to that standard.

It's not that my working ability was born low. It's because that I don't know what I don't know. Working with Ryan has made me realize what is possible and what it takes to create something powerful.

Like Ryan, my business partner Richard has wonderful ideas and far different experience than I have. He has written 36 New York Times Bestsellers. Richard always performs at high levels, and he is also very strict with me because my performance is a reflection(反映) on him. It's not a bad thing because it creates high pressure to help me make great progress and push me to learn more.

In a word, you need to stay with those people who can help you realize your level and potential(潜力). Staying with people who have higher standards is the fastest way for you to change. If you don't change your environment, your progress will be very slow. Who you stay with has huge importance.

David walked down the street. All he wanted to do was to play basketball with Jim. But his mother told him to return his sister's books to the library on his way to Jim's house.

In his eyes, books and summertime just don't go together. He thought he had read a lot during the school year. And he had never set foot inside a public library. Today he'd just drop the books off in the outside return box, but it was locked. He had to go inside to return them.

David walked inside the building a few minutes before closing time. He put the books into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the toilet, he'd be on his way to meet Jim. He walked out of the toilet. The library lights were turned off. He was locked—in a library!

David tried to use the telephone, but he couldn't find one. As the sun began to set, he searched for a light and found a little one on a desk. He used a pencil to write a note on a big piece of paper. It read, “I'm locked inside. Please call for help.” He put it on the front door. Surely, someone passing by would see it. He then turned his attention to the library itself.

He was surprised to discover that this place was not so bad. Rows and rows of books! When he saw a book about Michael Jordan on the desk, he picked it up. He opened the book and began to read. He felt that being locked in the library didn't seem to be such a terrible thing.

Is there a connection between music and language?

According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, let's look at two examples.

A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. In his study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room.

The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra. When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the broken parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again. Music improves attention, memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better.

Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it's also good for us in many other ways.

During the summer holiday, some students might have been busy with traveling, summer camps and all kinds of courses. But a special group of Chinese middle school students decided to taste the hardship of life outside school.

Twelve students in a big city sold vegetables at a local market together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan. Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.

“Compared to traveling, such social practice connects us and makes us learn how tough our parents are,” said Dalin,18, to the City Morning Post. Dalin, a senior high graduate, and her 12-year-old brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.

They learned to work hard to sell their veggies. Every morning they had to wake up at 3 o'clock. Some of them went to the farmer's market to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market to take up a temporary stall (临时摊位). To lower the cost, they learned to bargain (讲价)with the sellers.

At about 6:30 am, they began to sell vegetables. They peddled (吆喝) loudly to attract(吸引)customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.

For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. When the vegetables are too heavy, they should give customers an extra plastic bag.

Buying Is Doing?

How important is shopping to you? How much time do you spend buying things? And how much time do you spend organizing these things in your home? In the future, how much time will you spend in movie theaters, at amusement parks, at shopping malls, or at convenience stores? When you add it all up, you will probably see you spend a lot of your life consuming(消费)things. Consuming products is not necessarily bad. However, if we spend too much time doing it, we should look at it carefully.

Imagine that you have a week off from school. You don't have to go to class. However, in this week, you cannot spend any money—no shopping, no movies, no eating out. How would you spend your time?

What things would bring you happiness? Perhaps you would take a walk with your best friend. Perhaps you would help a child read. Or you might spend time with your family.

When we look back, it is likely that non-consuming experiences like these will be our most important memories. Why? Non-consuming activities are active, not passive. They don't come in a package. You make the experience yourself. For example, when you have a conversation with a friend, you are actively creating an experience. The conversation that you have with your friend cannot be experienced or recreated by anyone else. However, if you watch a movie with a friend, you will each have a package experience. It requires no action and little interaction between the two of you.

The environment we live in encourages us to have packaged experiences. We feel that we must consume because we believe that buying is doing. However, we can start a personal revolution (变革) against consumerism. How? By consuming less. We can ask ourselves what experiences bring us the greatest satisfaction. Then we can organize our lives so that we have more of those kinds of experiences.

()1. If consuming products takes too much time, we should ________.

A. spend less money

B. think about it carefully

C. organize our things

D. go to convenience stores

()2. The Chinese meaning of “passive”in the fourth paragraph is ________.

A. 主动的

B. 快乐的

C. 消极的

D. 盲目的

()3. The underlined word “It”in Paragraph 4 is about ________.

A. shopping

B. reading a book

C. talking with friends

D. watching a movie

()4. According to the passage, the writer believes that ________.

A. we can say no to consumerism by consuming less

B. buying things can bring us the greatest satisfaction

C. the environment seldom influences our shopping choices

D. consuming experiences will be our most important memories ()5. What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?

A. To introduce some ways of enjoying our spare time.

B. To encourage people to have more active experiences.

C. To explain reasons behind people's shopping behavior.

D. To share his personal experience in consuming products.

【英语】中考英语阅读理解经典题型带答案

【英语】中考英语阅读理解经典题型带答案 一、初三英语阅读理解(含答案详细解析) 1.根据短文理解,选择正确答案。 A Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟). Don't argue with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them You can't express(表达)yourself well if you are angry. Go to some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter. Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree(有分歧) on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other.
