1.Scientists say we are all born with a knack for mathematics. Every time we scan the cafeteria for a table that will fit all of our friends, we’re exercising the ancient estimation center in our brain.

Stanislas Dehaene was the first researcher to show that this part of the brain exists. In 1989, he met Mr. N who had suffered a serious brain injury. Mr. N couldn’t recognize the number 5, or add 2 and 2. But he still knew that there are “about 50 minutes” in an hour. Dehaene drew an important conclusion from his case: there must be two separate mathematical areas in our brains. One area is responsible for the math we learn in school, and the other judges approximate amounts.

So what does the brain’s estimation center do for us? Harvard University research er Elizabeth Spelke has spent a lot of time posing math problems to preschoolers. When he asks 5-year-olds to solve a problem like 21+30, they can’t do it. But he has also asked them questions such as, “Sarah has 21 candles and gets 30 more. John has 34 candles. Who has more candles?” It turns out preschoolers are great at solving questions like that. Before they’ve learned how to do math with numerals and symbols, their brains’ approximation centers are already hard at work.

After we learn symbolic math, do we still have any use for our inborn math sense? Justin Halberda at Johns Hopkins University gave us an answer in his study. He challenged a group of 14-year-olds with an approximation test: The kids stared at a computer screen and saw groups of yellow and blue dots flash by, too quickly to count. Then they had to say whether there had been more blue dots or yellow dots. The researchers found that most were able to answer correctly when there were 25 yellow dots and 10 blue ones. When the groups were closer in size, 11 yellow dots and 10 blue ones, fewer kids answered correctly.

The big surprise in this study came when the researcher compared the kids’ approximation test scores to their scores on standardized math tests. He found that kids who did better on the flashing dot test had better standardized test scores, and vice versa It seems that, far from being irrelevant, your math sense might predict your ability at formal math.

44. From the first two studies, we can learn that estimation center .

A. is divided into two separate mathematical areas

B. can help figure out numerals and symbols problems

C. functions independently in both kids’ and adults’ brains

D. works better when symbolic parts are injured or undergrown

45. What most surprised Justin in the study of 14-year-olds?

A. The variety of math abilities in different students.

B. The link between technology skills and estimation skills.

C. The difficulty of the task as the number of dots increased.

D. The connection between estimation skills and formal math ability.

46. What could be the best title for the passage?

A. Born with a Sense of Math.

B. Go beyond What You Can Learn.

C. Symbolic Math and Estimation Math.

D. Our Brain一a Born Mathematician.

2.Fikiri K iponda’s path from accountant to marine (海洋的) conservationist was sparked by a chance encounter. After securing his dream job, Kiponda decided he wanted more. He wasn’t quite sure what he was looking for until he ran across some turtle hatchlings.

He di dn’t know it was turtle. Fortunately enough he got the right person to ask and he got motivated. That person was Nkindi, a staff member at the Watamu Conservation project who later

invited him to volunteer on the project. He later left his accounting job and fully devoted himself into the world of sea turtles. Now,he runs and spends his time nursing critically endangered sea turtles back to health.

Sea turtles have been around for nearly 110 million years and are now considered highly endangered. Their preservation rests on activities of conservationists such as Kiponda as these turtles face numerous threats and signs of their extinction in the next 50 years.

Local fishermen traditionally catch them to supplement their own low catch rates and sell them for their oil. As changes are made to accommodate more hotels for tourists, there is less available beach land for turtle nesting.

Kiponda’s passion has now spread to his community, changing their attitude towards sea life preservation with his “by-catch releas e programme.”

Through this program, fishermen are now paid for returning turtles accidentally caught in their fishing nets. The healthy ones are tagged and released into the marine park while he takes care of sick and injured turtles back to health.

Before the launch of pioneering spirit like this, turtles caught by fishermen were used for their meat and their oil extracted (提炼) for its medicinal properties.

“Releasing the turtle back into the ocean is a very good feeling, like, you feel like you’ve done so mething concrete and I guess everybody would love to do that...so I guess it’s unique work.”

4.The next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) may be sitting right beneath you, at least if furniture maker Ikea has any say in the matter. The Swedish furniture company’s “future-livin g” research lab in Copenhagen is conducting a survey to understand what people want when it comes to smart furniture.

AI is now walking into more aspects of people’s daily lives. Self-driving cars are just around the corner, and AI robots can play and beat the best players of strategy games. As smart home technologies have become more ubiquitous, products ranging from smart electrical outlets(插座)to smart smoke alarms are flooding the market. Therefore, it’s not surprising that Ikea would

be moving in the same direction.

Exactly why people would want their sofa or bed frame to speak to then, track their daily movements or offer help is not yet clear. Though Ikea’s the new survey doesn’t directly answer that question, it does provide a hint of what people would feel comfortable with. Most participants wanted a more human0like form of virtual(虚拟的)assistants, as opposed to one that is more robotic. In terms of the ideal gender(性别)of the assistants, the most popular choice was neither male nor female. Few wanted a religious form of AI.

Just as with human friends, most wanted AI friends that were like them, affirming their own worldview. They wanted an AI assistant that was reasonably intelligent-that could collect data to predict what a person wanted before he or she asked, and that could prevent someone from making mistakes.

This is not the first time that Ikea has set foot in the field or futuristic technologies. In addition to wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that never rust(生锈), the furniture giant has also pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best meal. To decide on how intelligent you want your next sofa or bookshelf to be, you can take Ikea’s survey online.

4. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Beautiful.

B. Common.

C. Normal.

D. Environment.

5. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A. The differences between robot-like and human-like assistants.

B. What form of AI assistants people want.

C. What kind of friends people want.

D. The popular robots on the market.

6. Most people who received the survey wanted an AI assistant that could ________.

A. help them became smarter

B. communicate with them without troubles

C. have its own worldview

D. deal with their problems in advance

7. Which of the following products are from Ikea?

A. Smart sofas that can speak to you.

B. Smart beds than can track your daily movements.

C. Wireless charging cars.

In addition to wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that never rust(生锈), the furniture giant has also pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best meal.

5.When her classmates were having a good time, Molly sat at the picnic table alone. She remained awkward around her classmates. She seemed unsure of what to do or say, yet I could see her eyes longing for acceptance. Many students had already decided that her friendship would not be worth the energy required to overcome the awkwardness. Others teased her. Most ignored her except for one.

Brianna, the class clown, was making the other students laugh, as usual. “Brianna, do you see Molly down there? Would you mind walking down there and inviting her to come up here with the rest of us?”

Brianna sighed. I could tell she didn’t want to sacrifice precious minutes of her own recess (休息) to do what I was asking of her, but I also knew her heart. She often thought of others before herself— a rare character for anyone, much less a kid.

Knowing this choice was hard for her, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a D-buck, our class currency. Though bribery (行贿) was not the ideal way to handle this situation, I needed her cooperation.

“Here, I’ll pay you for your time.”

She offered an insincere smile, grasped the green paper, and headed down the hill.

As the rest of the children screamed and laughed, my eyes locked on Brianna as she neared the picnic table. Molly could be difficult, and I wouldn’t hav e been surprised if she sent Brianna back alone, refusing her invitation. When she encouraged herself to a standing position, I sighed with relief.

A minute later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Here, Mrs. D.” She handed me the D-buck.

“Why?” I asked.

“I shouldn’t keep this,” Her eyes fell to her feet, guilt radiating from her quiet voice. “I don’t want Molly to think I only went to get her so I could earn a D-buck. She’s my friend.”

A moment later, they were all laughing again, and who should I see among them, laughing for the first time that week? Molly.

4. According to the author, Molly .

A. felt awkward at being teased

B. had no energy to make friends

C. ignored the jokes from other kids

D. desired to be accepted by other kids

5. What distinguished Brianna from other kids?

https://www.360docs.net/doc/e517419906.html,st week, two companies, Kitty Hawk and Uber, announced their plans to bring flying cars to reality very soon.

Kitty Hawk president, Sebastian Thrun, announced Kitty Hawk’s flying car plans last Monday. According to its website, the car is electric-powered and will be able to travel at speeds up to 40 kilometers an hour. It says such a machine “does not require registration or a pilot’s license and may be flown in uncrowded areas for recreati onal purposes.” As of now, the car can only be flown over fresh water.

Kitty Hawk is making a list of people interested in buying the flying car. They must pay a deposit of $ 100. Those who get their names on the list early will receive $2,000 off the final cost of the car. However, Kitty Hawk has not yet announced the price. Its first flying cars are expected to go on sale by the end of this year.

Unlike the Kitty Hawk company, Uber does not plan to build its flying cars. Uber expects to launch flying taxis in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas, US by 2020. Like the Kitty Hawk car, Uber flying taxis will use electric power. Uber says its flying taxis could travel up to 241 kilometers an

hour. The company says that could reduce the travel time between San Francisco and San Jose, California from 2 hours on the road to 15 minutes in the air.

Riders could use the Uber app to book a flying taxi to take them to their destinations. The company has not yet said how costly air taxi travel would be compared to road taxi travel.

Sooner than you think, flying cars may appear in the sky. Much convenience as they will bring, just imagine having to avoid other flying cars. Also, what if your battery dies when you are in the air? And, how will you know where to land?

12. What may Kitty Hawk’s flying car be used for at present?

A. Accelerating the speed.

B. Having fun.

C. Advertising the company.

D. Fetching water.

13. What do we know about Kitty Hawk’s flying car from the third paragraph?

A. It costs two thousand dollars each.

B. It can travel over water.

C. It offers $100 to its potential buyers.

D. It hasn’t gone to market.

14. In what way is Uber’s flying taxi similar to Kitty Hawk’s flying car?

A. They travel at the same speed.

B. They are electric-powered.

C. They are supported by the Uber app.

D. They require a flying license.

15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph of the text?

A. To call for public donations.

B. To introduce some advantages.

C. To promote interest in science.

D. To talk about possible problems.

B 13. D 14. B 15. D

7.Apple and Microsoft each launched new products. One company astonished everyone. The other made people sleepy. Can you guess which was which? You probably guessed wrong. Because Apple, famous for its creative products, was the tech giant whose new product caused a collective shrug(耸肩). While Microsoft, which stole a move out of the Apple Playbook, won cheers from high-end, creative-class consumers like business analysts, media designers and music producers.

As Hayley Tsukayama remarked at The Washington Post, the Surface Studio, one of Microsoft's new products, is really just a super-sized version of the Surface Books product that Microsoft has been selling for years. But if you've ever watched science fiction movies like Minority report--where Tom Cruise seems to operate pictures and data hanging on mid-air by touching them, spreading his fingers to increase on details, and sending files and information sliding from one folder to another with a click of the fingers, you can see how Microsoft is trying to show the same experience.

Meanwhile, apple's new products were almost like some fine promotions for its Apple TV. They boast(炫耀)that the new Macbook Pros has a smaller size and more functions, and a new touch screen bar on laptop keyboards where function keys used to be.

So what's going on? In many ways, Apple is focusing on attracting the average consumers who have been attracted by Microsoft. And Microsoft is focusing on targeting the high-end professionals Apple has historically been associated with. You can even see this is the companies' ad campaigns:

Microsoft's ads stress imagination and creativity, while Apple,s commercial chief performance and convenience of its Macbooks.

So Apple is trying to control the world of devices and laptops from the top down, starting with the high-end market and moving on to appeal to a broader base of consumers. Microsoft, having already strengthened itself within the bigger low-end market, is now attempting the opposite with

a bottom-up strategy. Will these succeed? Time will tell...

12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Microsoft's new products made a big hit.

B. Apple's products aim at high-end consumers.

C. Apple and Microsoft developed the same products.

D. The design of Microsoft's products is original and unique.

13. Why does the author mention the science fiction movie in Paragraph 2?

A. To show how trendy Microsoft’s new products are.

B. To tell us Microsoft's new products can be used in movies.

C. To encourage more people to see the science fiction movie.

D. To show Microsoft’s new products are inspired by the movie.

14. What can we infer from the last two parts of the text?

A. Apple is changing its focus on consumer groups from average to high-end ones.

B. Microsoft is changing its focus on consumer groups from high-end to average ones.

C. The two companies are adopting different business strategies from their own before.

D. The two companies are facing fierce competition with each other.

15. In which section of a newspaper can we most probably read this passage?

A. Leisure and Entertainment.

B. Economics and Business.

C. Culture and Education.

D. Life and Fashion.

8.A dragonfly barely an inch and a half long appears to be animal world’s most productive long distance traveler - flying thousands of miles over oceans as it migrates from continent to continent - according to a newly published research.

Biologists who led the study say the evidence is in the genes. They found that populations of this dragonfly, called Pantala flavescens, in Texas, eastern Canada, Japan, Korea, India, and South America, have genes so similar that there is only one likely explanation. Apparently —somehow — these insects are traveling distances that are extraordinarily long for their small size, breeding (繁殖) with each other, and creating a common worldwide gene pool.

But how do insects from different continents manage to meet and hook up? Ware says it appears to be the way their bodies have ev olved. “These dragonflies have adaptations such as increased surface areas on their wings that enable them to use the wind to carry them.”

Dragonflies, in fact, have already been observed crossing the Indian Ocean from Asia to Africa. “They are following the weather,” says Daniel Troast, who analyzed the DNA samples in Ware’s

lab. “They’re going from India where it’s dry season to Africa where it’s wet season, and apparently they do it once a year.”

Wetness is a must for Pantala to reproduce, and that, says Ware, is why these insects would be driven to even attempt such a dangerous trip, which she calls a “kind of suicide.” The species depends on it. While many will die on the route, as long as enough make it, the species survives.

For the moment, the details of this extraordinary insect travel are an educated best guess. Much more work is needed to bring many loose ends together. Ware and Troast hope that scientists can work on plotting those routes.

12. What proves Pantala flavescens are the world’s longest-distance flyers?

A. Scientists have tracked the dragonfly across the world.

B. There are many Pantala flavescens in various continents.

C. The same dragonfly was found both in Asia and America.

D. Pantala flavescens in different continents have similar genes.

13. What helps Pantala flavescens fly over so long distance?

A. Their special body shape.

B. Their ability to use wind.

C. Their small and light body.

D. Their large and strong wings.

14. What is necessary for Pantala flavescens to reproduce?

A. Damp weather.

B. Enough sunshine.

C. Dry environment.

D. Warm nests.

15. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A. The weather.

B. The insect.

C. The wind.

D. The trip.

D 13. B 14. A 15. D

13. B

9.As self-driving cars come closer to being common on American roads, much of the rhetoric(说辞)promoting them has to do with safety. About 40,000 people die on U.S. roads every year, and driver errors are linked to more than 90 percent of crashes. But many of the biggest advocates of autonomous(自动的)vehicles aren’t car companies looking to improve the safety of their existing products. Huge support for itself-driving technologies is coming from Silicon Valley giants like Google and Apple.

Those of us who have studied the relationship between technology and society tend to look more carefully at the motivations behind any technologically push. I n this case, it’s clear that in addition to addressing safety concerns, Silicon Valley firms have a strong incentive(动机)to create a new venue for increasing the use of their digital devices. Every minute people spend on their mobile phones provides data—and often money—to tech companies.

At present, digital devices and driving are in conflict: There are serious, often fatal,

consequences when drivers use smartphones to talk or to text. Regulators and safety advocates look to resolve dial conflict by banning phone use while driving – as has happened in almost every state. But the tech companies are taking a different approach. The obvious answer for Silicon Valley is creating an automobile in which continuous cellphone use no longer poses a threat to anyone.

In recent years, the amount of time adults spend on their mobile devices has grown rapidly. At the moment, it’s around four hours a day for the average adult in the U.S. However, that rapid growth is likely to slow down as people run out of time that’s ava ilable for them up to use their devices. Unless, of course, there’s a new block of time that suddenly opens up. The average American now spends about 48 minutes in a car every day, a sizeable opportunity for increased cellphone use.

Sop as the public conve rsation around autonomous cars highlights the safety advantages, don’t forget the tech industry’s powerful desire for more profits, which goes well beyond simply saving us from ourselves.

8. Who are responsible for most traffic accidents in American?

A. Car companies.

B. Drivers.

C. Tech companies.

D. Self-driving cars.

9. What pushes Silicon Valley to promote self-driving technologies?

A. To make more money.

B. To reduce traffic accidents.

C. To limit the use of digital devices.

D. To support car companies.

10. What does the underlined phrase “a new block of time” possibly refer to?

A. The working time.

B. People’s spare time.

C. The time spent in the car.

D. The time spent on mobile devices.

11. What can we know from the passage?

A. We should teach people to strictly obey traffic rules.

B. The writer calls on us to look at autonomous cars wisely.

C. Car companies are the leading promoters of self-driving cars.

D. No solution to the conflict between mobile phone use and driving has been found yet.

B 9. A 10. C 11. B

10.Junxi “Emma” Yang played Carnegie Hall before she got to high school. But her piano skills may have to take a back seat to her programming skill.

According to World Journal, a US-based Chinese media organization, Emma, a 14-year-old student at the Brearley School in Manhattan, New York started coding when she was 6. Four years later, her beloved grandmother began devel oping Alzheimer’s.

When Emma’s family moved to New York from Hong Kong in 20143, she became passionate about

programming. By the time she was 10, her grandmother had already developed the disease.

Emma got right to work. With her coding skills, she had a smartphone app created before long, designed to help people suffering from Alzheimer’s.

They don’t appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them.

Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He’s a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.

About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular we bsite that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike’s owner and arranged to meet him—supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.”
