American-born Chinese girl, chose to buck the trend(反其道而行之). Earlier this year, the

13-year-old left the US and became a ninth-grader in Chongqing. Southwest China.

Before she came to China, Li had learned about 700 Chinese characters from her mother. However, while studying at Chongqing Yucai School, Li found that Chinese learning was much harder than she had thought. The hardest part was ancient Chinese poems. It seemed impossible to remember the characters

So Li catches every possible moment to do her Chinese exercise. She keeps asking questions after class then checking the dictionaries many times a day. Now the girl is able to recite articles like Zhuge Liang’s Northern Expedition Memorial(出师表). Besides Chinese learning, getting used to the learning environment was also a challenge for her. Li found that Chinese students seldom have a chance to express themselves in class, while teachers speak most of the time. As an active student, it really made her upset, but she soon found a way out.

“Although I can’t talk too much in class, teachers here are patent and nice. They can answer your questions any time after class.”

As a native English speaker, li also helps her classmates practice spoken English. She suggests that they speak to her in englsh after class. It turned out to be a great idea. Now during the class break, Li is the most popular student since everybody wants to talk to her.

When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book; so a poor man bought it for a little money. Between its pages there was something very interesting. It was a thin paper on which was written the secret of the “touchstone”!

The touchstone was a small pebble(卵石) that could turn any common metal into pure gold. The writing explained that it was lying among thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it, but the secret was this: the real stone would fell warm, while ordinary pebbles were cold.

So the man camped on the seaside, and began testing pebbles.

He thought that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and put them down again he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that as cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was touchstone, the days became weeks and the weeks into months and months into years. One day, however, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done, he had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into to sea that when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away. For almost one hundred years, people have looked up at the sky over a certain part of No rth Carolina and wondered:what is that? They sometimes see balls of light above them.1 The mystery began in September of1913.A man was fishing at night in the Blue Ridge M ountains of North Carolian. There was no sound, but suddenly unusual lights began to appear over Brown Mountain. The fisherman said they were red and round, like a ball. 2 They c ame back night after night. He told some friends about what he had seen. The Charlotte Daily Observer newspaper wrote about the story.A worker for the United States Geological Survey visited the area to research.3

But the lights continued to appear. Some people said September,October and Novembe r were the best months to see them.Nine years later,a Geological Survey team came back to t he area to do a larger research.4They said witness(目击

者)were seeing train lights,campfires,or car lights.In1961a large flood(洪

水)swept through the area.Electrical power was lost.Trains could not run.Roads and bridges were washed away. But the Brown Mountain lights continued to appear.

5Throughout the southern United States, people have spoken of seeing a“Jack o Lante rn”or“Will of the Wish(鬼

火)”floating in the night sky.Scientists say these sightings are often balls of swamps gas(沼气).As plants die in low and wet swampy areas, they give off gas that lights.

The‘‘sixth sense”of direction has been a mystery to scientists for more than twenty years.B y trying out ideas and solving problems one by one, they are now getting closer to one answer. One funny idea is that animals might have a built-in compass(指南

针).Our earth itself is a big magnet磁

体.So a little magnetic hand that swings freely lines itself with the big earth magnet to point north and south. When people discovered that idea about a thousand years ago and invented the compass ,it allowed people to take trips in the sea or ocean, even under cloudy skies.

Actually the idea of the living compass came just from watching animals in nature. Many birds move twice a year between their summer homes and winter homes. Some of them fly for thousand s of kilometers and mostly at night.Tests have shown that some birds can tell star patterns. But the y can keep on course even under cloudy skies. How can they do that?

A common bird that does not move from places to places but is great at finding its way home is the homing pigeon(家

鸽).Not all pigeons can find their way home. Those that can are very good at it,and they have bee n widely studied.

One interesting study was to stick little magnets to the birds’heads to stop their magnetic sen se—just as a loud radio can keep you from hearing a call to dinner. On sunny days, that did not fo ol the pigeons.Clearly, they can use the sun to tell which way they are going. But on cloudy days, the pigeons with magnets could not find their way.It was as if the magnets had stopped their magn etic sense.

Similar studies with the same kind of results were done with honey bees. These insects also s eem to have a special sense of direction.

Although scientists did those experiments, the idea of an animal compass seemed pretty unusual. How would an animal get the magnetic stuff for a compass. An answer came from a piece of unex pected information.A scientist was studying bacteria(细

菌)that live in small pools. He found accidentally little rod-like bacteria that all swam together in

one direction—north.

Further study showed that each little bacterium had a chain of thick things inside, which prov ed(证

实)magnetic. The bacteria had made themselves into little magnets that could line up with the eart h’s magnet. The big news was that a living thing, even a simple bacterium, can make magnetite.T hat led to a search to see whether animals might have it.By using a special instrument called mag netometer(磁力

计),scientists were able to find magnetite in bees and birds, and even in fish.In each animal, exce pt for the bee,the magnetic stuff was always in or closer to the brain. Thus, the idea of a built—in animal compass began to seem reasonable.
