The desire for a better life is sometimes so big that it makes people leave their countries and their families and work in other countries. They know that they will have to face difficult moments, that they won't be able to communicate with the persons around them and that maybe they will have to work in illegal conditions to get the money they need for their families, but they all take these chances and they hope they will succeed.

On the other hand, there are persons who immigrate just for the sake of the persons they love. They leave their families to make other families with the persons they love. Women go to meet the men who have chosen other countries to start a new life, even if they miss their families and their friends. Maybe they don't have a place to work but they are capable of waiting to see what destiny has for them.

There are also the cases of the persons who are forced to leave their countries because of a war which

threatens their lives. They ' d rather start from the very beginning than risking putting their lives in danger.

When well developed countries see that their homeland is being “ invaded ” by lots of immigran, t shey set

new laws that make immigration harder. As a result of this, many illegal immigrants cross the borders and are eager to work, although they are paid only at half of the amount of money native workers receive for the same kind of job.

The opinions of the local people are varied and they range from total refusal to complete acceptance. Immigrants in countries which have large communities of them are fighting for the recognition of their social rights and for equal treatment.

Many immigrants have managed to be fully accepted by the communities where they live and they have managed to change the opinions of the local people about them.

Remember high school? You could choose French or Spanish. What you couldn 't choose was to be the right to learn a new language easily. You memorized verbs, but you probably di dn't learn to speak fluently. Present

school systems know better. Second languages are introduced in elementary school. Little kids do learn more easily than high school students. But current research says to really do it right, start even earlier. Start when the child is learning a first language. Babies have an astonishing ability to absorb it.

Nowadays a second language is not a luxury - it 's a necessity. Studying a second language offers surprising benefits to children. Research has demonstrated improved ability to communicate, better cognitive development, richer cultural awareness and, finally, better job opportunities for those who know a second language.

Research suggests that from birth through age 10 is the best time to introduce new languages to a child.

The child will learn the language faster, store it better and most often speak it with near-native pronunciation.

Recent research indicates a young child up through age 5 can learn and process up to five languages!

Many parents wonder how to bring a new language into their little one 'lsife. Many experts agree the bilingual approach (双语教学法) for the very young child is best. Teach the new language alongside the native language. It 'a s easy as pointing to a cat and saying “ cat th”en following with “ gato. T”his bilingual method provid es continuing education in the child 's native tongue while acquiring skills in the new one.

Today 'psarents know the importance of being bilingual. Now they just need to know where to turn for assistance in finding fun and affordable bilingual products that will bring the target language into their child The Internet has made their search much easier than five years ago. Look for bilingual programs that allow you to try their visual or audio products on line so that you get a good feel for the content and style of the language learning within that particular program.

Reader Janet Maynard has a lot of young bushes in her garde n and is sufferi ng from "wateri ng can elbow" . So for Janet and anyone else who does n't want to waste time, effort and water, here are my top tips for keep ing pla nts refreshed in thirsty times.

Water in the evening if possible, rather than leaving it till you see things suffer. That way the roots can take up the water in cool soil overni ght.

Violently jetting hoses (皮管)mess up the soil structure and may expose delicate roots. Use a rose (喷头)on a can. Aim

low —don't waste water wett ing leaves, even though they look pretty and "refreshed".

The most valuable and easily damaged pla nts n eed the most atte nti on, such as n ewly pla nted trees, bushes and climbers. Remove any water-keepi ng mulch (护根物)you may have put around the base, the n water it thoroughly at least two gallons, slowly. Don't aim your can rose at the stem -which we all usually tend to do. Aim the water in a wide circle so that the whole of the area un der the pla nt is watered. You could even make a cha nnel in the soil right around the pla nt so that the water is held in place as it soaks (浸透)in. Replace the

mulch. Repeat each week even in showery weather for the first summer.

How much water for pots? Fill up the gap betwee n the top of the soil and the top of the pot. Let the water soak right in and then fill it again. Do this daily in hot weather for most summer potted plants.

Stand pots in saucers (垫盘)-it makes a big differenee. But remember to check that the plants are not

sitt ing in water for days on end whe n the weather tur ns wet. Roots will rot.

If the fertilizer in pots really dries out, the water may get straight out of the pot without being absorbed. Correct this by standing or floating the pot in a bucket of deep water until it sinks and no bubbles rise.

A push-butt on wateri ng can makes for more efficie nt wateri ng, and recycled water bottles upside dow n with a n eedle which has a hole on the end are useful, too, for pots.

53. What does the underlined part watering can elbow ”n Paragraph 1 most probably mean?

D. Tired ness or pain in part of the body.

A. It would be better to water the pla nt in the evening tha n in the morning.

B. It 'n ecessary to water n ewly-pla nted trees once a week in the first summer.

C. Put potted plants in saucers in case the roots rot in damp weather.

D. Make sure fertilizer in the pot doesn 'dry out, otherwise the water would not be fully absorbed.

55. We may easily lear n from the passage that _____ .

A. potted pla nts n eed to be watered every week even in rainy weather.

B. we ' better put water on the leaves and stems to keep the pla nts refreshed.

C. It 'better to use a rose on a can to water tha n jett ing hoses.

D. people usually don 'twant to waste time, effort and water in raising plants.

All forms of tobacco —cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco —are dangerous. It doesn't help to substitute products that seem like they're better for you than regular cigarettes, such as filtered or low-tar cigarettes.

The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. This isn't always easy, especially if everyone around you is smoking and offering you cigarettes. It may help to have your reasons for not smoking ready for times you may feel the pressure, such as "I just don't like it" or "I want to stay in shape for soccer" (or football, basketball, or other sport).

The good news for people who don't smoke or who want to quit is that studies show that the number of teens who smoke has dropped evidently. Today, about 23% of high school students smoke.

If you do smoke and want to quit, you have lots of information and support available. Different approaches to quitting work for different people. For some, quitting cold turkey is best. Others find that a slower approach is the way to go. Some people find that it helps to go to a support group especially for teens. These are sometimes sponsored by local hospitals or organizations like the American Cancer Society. The Internet offers a number of good resources to help people quit smoking.

When quitting, it can be helpful to realize that the first few days are the hardest. So don 't give up. Some

people find they have a few setbacks before they manage to quit for good.

Staying smoke free will give you a whole lot more of everything —more energy, better performance, better looks, more money in your pocket, and, in the long run, more life to live!

57. What will be the best title of the passage?

A. Live a Long Life

B. Staying Smoke Free

C. The Smoking Problems

D. The Good News for Smokers

58. How can you effectively quit smoking?

A. Walking slowly

B. Eating cold turkey

C. Staying in hospital

D. Finding a suitable approach

59. We can conclude that after stopping smoking you will _________ .

A. have no cancer

B. be more attractive

C. run for a long time

D. get more opportunities

60. Who is the passage written for?

A. adolescents

B. Heavy smokers

C. College students

D. Smoking athletes

People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: people with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more

A summary of the teaching work of senior three English teache rs 汇报人:JinTai College

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror. My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away. “Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 21. What did the family do before the storm came? A. They left the motels. B. They packed up the cars. C. They stayed on the beach. D. They visited their neighbors. 22. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach? A. Closing their eyes tightly. B. Praying in silent terror. C. Crawling on the ground. D. Running away at once. 23. Where did the family stay in the storm? A. Under a deck. B. In a basement. C. Inside the car. D. Behind a door. 24. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life on the beach B. An Unusual Cottage C. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family B The Best of Alaska
