My View on the Post-graduate Craze

Every year, million of college students will sit in for the post-graduate entrance examination. More and more students have regarded the pursuing of a master degree as an indispensable part of their education.

What is to account for their enthusiasm for a post-graduate diploma? First, it is the demand of the time. In an age of knowledge updating and information explosion, what you have learned in college can hardly meet the demand of society. Talents of high quality who are equipped with the latest knowledge and skill will be needed more than ever. That is why many students will further their studies. Second, we all recognize that the more education you have, the more likely you are to succeed. Compared with those without a master degree, masters will enjoy more preferential treatment, for example, better salaries, more opportunities for promotion and training. A post-graduate degree can guarantee a more promising career. Last but not least, with the graduation of a large number of college students, competition for jobs becomes more and more fierce. One way to gain some advantage over others is to have a higher degree.

Obviously, public awareness of the situation has created a surge of interest in acquiring a master’s degree. No wonder millions of students will consider pursuing a post-graduate degree.

College Lectures and Discussion

What is the difference between the lecture system and the discussion system─the two teaching methods prevalent on campus both at home and abroad? As a senior, it is not very difficult for me to tell: they have both strengths and weaknesses

Many students like the lecture system because it helps them to learn quickly and much more. Attending a well-prepared lecture is a most rewarding experience: it can open a new horizon for you and save you much time as wel l—time you might otherwise spend reading one book after another. Y et the fault of the lecture system is that it cultivates a bad habit of passive learning. Students bring their notebooks and even tape recorders to class to write everything down without thinking for themselves, let alone raise any question to teachers. On the contrary the discussion system encourages students to form their own ideas and opinions, to engage in frequent and even heated debate, you have to do a lot of homework beforehand, find answers yourselves and thus you develop the analytical skills which benefit both your academic career and your future life. However, it also has its weakness: students do not learn systematically.

In my opinion, both the systems must be improved and a mixed method may gain more popularity among us students.

Should Class Attendance Be Required?

Required class attendance is so common at colleges and universities that many teachers and even students themselves simply assume it is a good thing. In fact, required class attendance does more harm than good.

There are several reasons that teachers should not require attendance. First, rigid attendance policies do not benefit students’ studies. For example, a student may have to give up a lecture which he finds vital to his studies simply because he dare not run the risk of being penalized for poor attendance in his course. Second, the lectures of some teachers are not always constructive. A student should be allowed to decide for himself whether an in-class experience is worthwhile when his teacher merely repeats material from the textbook or wastes class time by telling irrelevant stories. Finally and most importantly, there is no proven correlation between attendance and performance in a course. A student may never miss a single attendance in a course, but who knows whether or not he is just sitting there daydreaming all the time?

Required class attendance may secure one hundred percent attendance for a course, but it does not make much sense.

My View on Examinations

In most schools and colleges the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject. Although it does the job quite efficiently, its side effects are also enormous.

The most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. As the examination score is the only criterion for his academic performance, a student is driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively. Examinations do not motivate a student to seek more knowledge, but to restrict his reading; they do not enable him to study consistently throughout the semester, but to induce cramming during exam week. Examinations also lower the standards of teaching. Since teachers themselves are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. And no subjects can be taught successfully merely through being approached with intent to take examinations.

Actually, few of us admit that examinations can contribute anything really important to the students’academic development. If that’s the case, why can’t we make a change and devise something more efficient and reliable than examinations?

My View on T eenagers' Studying Abroad

Recently it seems that among the students who choose to study abroad, there are more and more teenagers who study in high schools or even elementary schools. Many people, especially the parents, think it will certainly do good to their children because the independent life will make them learn confidence and perseverance. Moreover,the quality of overseas education is often higher, thus the child stands a better chance of entering a better university and getting a better job in the future.

After careful consideration, I have to say the above view is more than biased. On the one hand, early independent life is not necessarily good, if the child cannot receive proper guidance and tender care from both teachers and parents.On the other hand, the educational quality is also a question--too many foreign universities aim at earning money. When the children come back, who can guarantee that they can adapt to the fierce competition here?

We can see clearly that although teenagers' studying abroad may bring favorable results, there are still a lot to worry about. It seems necessary for young students to make a careful investigation before going abroad.

Why I Came to College

Why have I chosen to attend college?—a question I have put to myself many times in the past two academic years. But the answer is always the same: college education is something I truly want to do in my life and it is worthwhile.

There are many reasons for my choosing to attend college. The main one is that I enjoy learning and gaining knowledge. I remember that as my high school education was drawing to a close, my desire for continuing to learn felt increasingly strong, and the decision was naturally made when I realized I would not be content to simply end my educational career with high school and enter the working world so soon. I decided to enter college not only because it is a place where I can continue to seek scientific truths, but also it is a place where I can be exposed to various new, original ideas. It helps to expand my horizons and make me a well-rounded person. Of course I must admit that I chose to attend college also because I felt it was ensure a secure future for myself. For in today’s world, a college education has become almost essential if one wishes to complete in the job market and to find a worthwhile position.

For these reasons, I never mind spending beautiful nights on paperwork; I never consider myself miserable and unfairly burdened; and I never think college education is a waste of time and money.

Salary or Interest

Upon graduation, virtually all college students will confront the problem of the career choice. It is truly a tough choice. Students' opinions differ greatly on this issue. Some hold that priority should be given to their interest in jobs, but others take the attitude that salary is the most critical factor influencing their career choices.

As to myself, I prefer the latter view. A well-paid job exerts a tremendous fascination on a great number of people, with no exception to me. Although it might be impossible to measure the value of one’s job in terms of money, salary counts most when I choose my future career. In my view, our career choices largely depend on how and where we have been brought up. I come from a poor urban family and my parents were both laid-off workers. In order to finance my tuition, they have been working hard over the past four years. As the only son in my family, I have to shoulder the burden of supporting my family.

In short, salary is the first and only consideration in my choice of career

There are an increasing number of students who choose to live off campus. Parents and university administrations understandably reacted differently. They voiced concerns about security and the threat of off-campus lifestyles getting out of control. However, college students have their own reasons for their choices。

Some students prefer to live on campus for the following reasons. First, campus residents are closer to classes, the library, and other resources, so they are more likely to succeed in college and complete their bachelor’s degree in four years. Furthe rmore, Living in a dorm is a great opportunity to meet all kinds of new people and develop relationships with them, so students living on campus are more sociable. Last but not the least, living on campus is cheaper and more convenient. Often times, off-campus housing is more expensive than on-campus housing and while living on campus, you don’t have to worry about monthly rent payments and utility bills。

Some others choose to live off campus because they believe living off campus they are more independent, with more privacy and a lot more quiet time. Living off campus gives them freedom from those dorm rules and allow them to set their own. The extra space also means that one can probably find a quiet place to study in the convenience of his own home。

A s for me, I’m a faithful supporter of the former group because I, living on campus myself, have witnessed and enjoyed all the convenience and happiness of doing so. To me, living on campus undoubtedly adds an important element to the complete college exper ience。

My opinion on Campus Love Campus

Love isn't a newly-born phenomenon. Some people are strongly against it while some others think it's natural.

I don't advocate it. The reasons are as follows. First of all, undergraduates are neither fully psychologically mature nor able to assume the responsibility, especially freshmen and sophomores. Second, they may indulge in it, thus dilapidate their study, which isn't rare. Third, some just take advantage of it to kill time, avoid boredom with much time at their own disposals, have someone keep company, etc. What's more, some change dating "partners" frequently, holding a paradox opinion that they could show off their charm or accumulate experience, but more often than not, they would leave a bad impression, such as lacking the sense of responsibility, on others, especially their former sweethearts. Last, the proportion of successful couples is too low.

The overwhelming majority reach the same end-parting just before graduation, forced by reality, etc. So, look before you leap, discard campus love and make a wiser decision after graduation.

Can Practical Skills Take the Place of Traditional Courses?

Thousands of excellent college students, with forced smiles and anxious looks, elbow their way through the crowded job market, wishing to grasp a desirable post in a foreige-funded company with a high salary needed by a comfortable life. Many of them, sending a hundred resumes to various enterprises, unfortunately, only get one reply, which fails to grant their rosy future. However, those with several certificates in English and computers, though not capable and distinguished at all, always taste the sweetness of success in the tremendously competitive job market.

Such phenomenon has aroused contemplation of many students who always consider themselves superior, and has led to a new tendency. College students in growing numbers attach great importance to practical skills, while those traditional courses no longer draw their attention. Is that a positive tendency? T he answer, in my opinion, is absolutely negative.

College education, totally different from that in technical institutions, aims to cultivate all rounded students. With this goal in mind, college students should dip into various subjects, while simultaneously concentrate on one academic field ─their major. It is likely that they will not excel immediately after they work in a new post for the first time due to their lack of social experience and practical skills. However, when they are adjusted to the reality of work, they will play an important role and become valuable asset of the company they work for, owing to their excellent ability. Their value is enormous in the long run, but may be invisible on a short term. Any far-sighted employers, especially those in established international companies, understand this point and formulate their recruiting principles accordingly. There is no need for college students to make a rush to follow the tendency blindly. All they should do is coordinate their majors and practical courses and never break that balance.

In addition, practical skills, like English and computers, are just tools which can help students approach success easily, but not the determining factors which can bring success home. Once they

encounter obstacles in work, they can only rely on specialized knowledge. Lack of specialized knowledge will lead to failure when th ey work further and meet with core problems. Practical skill can be compared to a pen, with which magnificent poems can be written, but how to write them is the key factor and the tough job as well. That is why our society is always saturated with various pens, but constantly lack of great poets. To college students, this is also the case. As time elapses, a growing number of people will master practical skills, but the number of excellent college students is limited. The wise decision they should make is to take advantage of their college life to learn as much knowledge as possible. That is their competitive edge which will eventually lead to a desirable destiny for their job hunting.

From the above discussion, it is the traditional courses which can grant them a brilliant future, not the practical skills which only result in a temporary advantage. Our times is in great need of another Edison or another Newton who can explore the inexhaustible treasure of science, not those so-called distinguished college students who can only work in front of the computer screen and speak a language from a different continent.
