While applying to college may seem easy, getting in can be tough ! When you apply for college, you will have to be honest with yourself and do a bit of research to find the right fit. Here are three steps to take when applying to colleges for the best chances at getting into the best college for you. Step l: Making a List of Colleges to Apply to

With over 6,000 colleges in the United States, the first step in applying to college is to do some research and make a college list. This process will be different for everyone. The number of colleges you apply to can vary, from applying to I school (not recommended) t0 30 schools (not recommended), each applicant can choose how many colleges they apply to. Many limit the number

because applications are accompanied by a fee.

Step2: Splitting the List into Target, Reach and Safety Schools

In general, students will want to apply to three types of schools: Target, Reach and Safety schools. It is up to you how many applications you send, but a good mix would be more target than reach, and at least one safety. You will need to take your list, and now decide which are your top picks, which are attainable for you academically, which are affordable for you only with aid, and refine (精炼) your broad list into a group of schools that gives you the best chance for success. Talk to an admissions counselor at your high school if you have questions about this.

Step 3: Completing and Sending Applications to Colleges

College applications take time to complete - you have to write essays, ask for recommendations and get test scores sent to schools - so stay organized! Nuclear power's danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation.

Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can't be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can't detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can't sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.

At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being immediately by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be serious. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed immediately, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But

if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.

This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(辐射 )and feel fine. then die for cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents. Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.

51. What is the most dangerous factor of nuclear power?

A. Amount

B. Quantity

C. Radiation

D. Place

52. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Nuclear radiation can do little harm to human beings.

B. Nuclear radiation can do harm to human beings.

C. Nuclear radiation can be detected by human senses.

D. Nuclear radiation is just like common radio waves.

53. How can nuclear radiation kill an animal?

A. By damaging its heart.

B. By killing a few cells in its body.

C. By hitting any place in its body.

D. By killing many cells in important organs.

54. Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery because_______.

A. it can do harm to a person while the victim doesn't know

B. human beings learn its harmfulness

C. nuclear radiation can kill a person very easily

D. human beings have no effective machine to detect nuclear radiation

55. If a human being is hit by nuclear radiation, he may _______.

A. die of cancer after many years

B. die immediately

C. have a child who may be born weak

D. all of the above

第II卷

注意事项: 1.用黑色墨水的钢笔或签字笔将答案写在答题卡上。

第三部分写作

第一节:阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。

(共5小题:每小题2分,满分l0分)

As an English teacher, I've been lucky enough to travel to many countries. I've seen

people celebrating everything from the arrival of new babies to the delivery of new cars.

I've attended weddings, parties and religious celebrations in countries as far apart as

Argentina and Japan, and I've noticed that gold - the metal or the colour is almost

always part of cultural events, traditions and celebrations.

From "mashallah" gold tokens(纪念品) that people give to babies in Turkey, to the

gold stars that primary teachers stick on their students' exercise books, to the gold coffin that the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson was buried in, it makes me wonder: Why do people love gold?

For some people, gola seems to be a status symbol. Indian businessman Datta Phuge loves gold so much that he's even bought a shirt made of the stuff -

at a cost of $ 250,000. Datta Phuge has his reasons. He explains: "Some celebrities want to own an Audi or Mercedes and have big cars. I chose gold. "

For other people, gold is an investment. The price of gold generally increases over time and in European markets it reached over $ 1, 500 per ounce in 2020. And for many people, the family heirloom(传家宝) brings together status and investment. My mother has a gold bracelet that was given to her by her grandmother - who, in turn, inherited it from her own grandmother. It's quite a heavy piece and probably worth quite a lot of money. But its sentimental value is greater than its value in dollars: It's a beautiful object that holds many family memories. When the time comes, my mum will give the bracelet to me.

So, status and investment are good reasons to value gold. But, I think that the real reason people love gold is because it can be made into beautiful objects. Think .about Tutankhamen's death mask. People love gold because it captures our minds, our imaginations and, above all. our hearts.

(英语)高考英语阅读理解试题(有答案和解析)

(英语)高考英语阅读理解试题(有答案和解析) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Ana, her husband Mario, and their four-year old son Antonio just moved to North Carolina. They need a temporary place to call "home" until they get settled into their new surroundings. So, Ana figured that she had better start looking for an apartment for them to stay in. First, Ana picked up an Apartment Book at her local newspaper stand. The Apartment Book contained listings of all the major apartment complexes in her area. Ana started by looking at the prices in the advertisements for apartments in the Apartment Book. Then, she read about the amenities that each apartment complex offered. For example, some apartments had a clubhouse, a gym (also called a "fitness center"), and a pool. After considering prices, amenities, and locations, Ana found a few apartment complexes that she liked. Ana called the apartment complexes. She set up appointments with the apartment managers to see the apartments she found interesting. Ana made five phone calls, total. "I'll see you then," she said to the fifth apartment manager, and hung up the phone. When Mario got home (to the hotel in which they were staying) from work, Ana showed him the list of apartments. "These look good," he said. "Mommy, let me see," said Antonio, whom Mario had just brought home from childcare. Ana showed Antonio the pictures of the apartments. The next day, while Mario was at work and Antonio was at childcare, Ana visited the apartment complexes. After visiting all five, she found that she liked the fifth one the best. It was near a good school system for her son, and it was near her and her husband's workplace. She went home and discussed it with her husband, and they decided that they wanted to rent the apartment. The next day, they called the manager of the apartment complex and told him that they would like the apartment. The manager asked them to sign a rental contract and pay a security deposit so that if any damage was done to the apartment while they were in it, the security deposit would pay for it. They signed the rental contract and paid the security deposit. Finally, they had a place to stay. (1)Which of the following is not an amenity? A.Clubhouse. B.Fitness center. C.Pool. D.High ceilings. (2)What did Ana consider while looking through the Apartment Book? A.Prices. B.Amenities. C.Locations. D.All of the above. (3)Why is the security deposit needed when people rent a house? A.Because it ensures that a renter will pay the rent on time.
