“the way+从句”结构的意义及用法

首先让我们来看下面这个句子：

Read the following passage and talk about it with your classmates. Try to tell what you think of Tom and of the way the children treated him.

在这个句子中，the way是先行词，后面是省略了关系副词that 或in which的定语从句。

下面我们将叙述“the way+从句”结构的用法。

1．the way之后，引导定语从句的关系词是that而不是how,因此，<<现代英语惯用法词典>>中所给出的下面两个句子是错误的：This is the way how it happened. This is the way how he always treats me.

2. 在正式语体中，that可被in which所代替；在非正式语体中，that则往往省略。由此我们得到the way后接定语从句时的三种模式：1) the way +that-从句2) the way +in which-从句3) the way +从句

例如：The way(in which ,that) these comrades look at problems is wrong.这些同志看问题的方法不对。

The way(that ,in which)you’re doing it is completely crazy.你这么个干法，简直发疯。

We admired him for the way in which he faces difficulties.

Wallace and Darwin greed on the way in which different forms of life had begun.华莱士和达尔文对不同类型的生物是如何起源的持相同的观点。

This is the way (that) he did it. I liked the way (that) she organized the meeting.

3.the way(that)有时可以与how(作“如何”解)通用。例如：

That’s the way (that) she spoke. = That’s how she spoke.

I should like to know the way/how you learned to master the fundamental technique within so short a time.

4．the way的其它用法：以上我们讲的都是用作先行词的the way，下面我们将叙述它的一些用法。

1)用作as或according as,引导状语从句，常见于美国英语。如：

I like it the way it is.

Even today, political maps reflect the world the way we want it to look.

时至今日，政治地图不是按我们想要看到的那样来反映世界。

Kings played maps the way we play board games.君主们玩地图就象我们玩棋子一样。

I always thought she was a common-sense person who discussed things the way they ought to be discussed.我一向认为好是个明达的人，讨论问题总是该怎样讨论就怎样讨论。

The way I look at it, it’s not what you do that matter so much.依我看，重要的并不是你做什么。

No wonder that girl despises me, the way you encourage her.难怪那位姑娘看不起我，原来是你在作怪。

2)用作that，引导主语从句，常见于美国英语。如：

It’s a sin the way he keeps on doing it.他不停这样做，实在是一种罪过。(=It’s a sin that he keeps…)

It was pitiful the way he kept complaining to his wife.他不停地向妻子诉苦，真够可怜的。

3)用作how(作“多么”解)或how much，引导名词性从句。如：

No one except you, not even the children, can understand the way I miss Dave.除了你以外，没有人会明白我多么思念大卫，甚至连孩子们也不会明白。

4)在下面的句子中，way意为“道路”，故后面的介词用了by：

There was a high rock at the far end so that there was only one way into this place the way by which we had come.那一头有一块高大的岩石、所以只有一条路能走进这块地方，那就是我们进来的那条路。

5)下面句子中的way意为“方式、方法”，但前面是限定词any 和no,所以后面的介词也没用in：

I can never hear the lovely noise of the sea never again see the beautiful flowers and the sun! Tell me, grandmother, is there any way by which I can get a soul?我再也听不到大海可爱的涛声，再也看不见美丽的花朵和太阳!告诉我，祖母，有什么办法让我得到一个灵魂呢？
