Help arrives in many forms, sometimes when you least expect it. This past November, Johnny Bobbitt Jr.’s selfless actions inspired strangers to pay it forward after he gave his last $ 20 to help Kate McClure when she needed help.

The Marine Corps soldier put a stran ger’s needs before his when McClure was trapped in the countryside of Philadelphia after running out of gas. Bobbitt told her to lock her car and wait for him to come back. A little while later, he returned with a gas can and zero money in his pocket.

While someone could have easily taken advantage of the situation with McClure, Bobbitt had only the best intention.

Once McClure realized Bobbitt spent the last of his money to help a complete stranger, she set up a GoFundMe page to help him out, and her effor ts didn’t go unnoticed. The fundraising campaign was spreaded quickly and raised over $ 400,000.

Bobbitt was so moved by the kindness of McClure and thousands of donors that he asked her to end the campaign so others could get the help they needed as well. The soldier’s act of kindness changed his life and he made sure he would put the money

into good use.

The donations are managed by a lawyer and financial advisor to make sure that Bobbitt will have financial security for the rest of his life. Alongside purchasing a new home, and his dream car (a used 1999 Ford Ranger), Bobbitt plans on donating to multiple charities and individuals who helped him out one way or another when he needed it most.

To thank his donors, Bobbitt left a note on the GoFundMe page: “I want to let you all know that thanks to all of you and with the help of Kate and Mark I was able to purchase MY NEW HOME yesterday! I’ll continue to thank you every single day for the rest of my life.”

Endangered Mexican howler monkeys are one of the loudest land animals on the earth

because of their call that can be heard for three miles. But the species finds it increasingly difficult to find food as a result of human’s destroying the forests. Research carried out by Cambridge University found that the limited population left in Mexico are taking longer to find fruits to eat.

Dr Jacob Dunn, a biological anthropologist who carried out the research, said the lack of food increases stress levels, which reduces chances of reproduction (繁衍).

As forests are destroyed, the monkeys become cut off and isolated on forest islands that increasingly lack the fruits which provide an important component of their natural diet. This has led to the monkeys spending ever more time and effort seeking for food, often increasing leaf consumption when their search is, quite literally, fruitless. The traditional view was that the leaves exploited by howler monkeys were an abundant food source-but this is not the case.

The monkeys rely much more heavily on fruits than previously believed, and when turning to leaves for food, they have to be highly selective in the leaves they consume, visiting lots of different trees. This leads to the increased “travel time” and consequent high levels of stress we are seeing in these animals with their habitats destroyed.

The research took place in the tropical rainforests of the Mexican state of Veracruz-which are being cutting down and burning by human activity. The monkeys are consuming more leaves and less fruits as a result of the deforestation (砍伐森林) of the tropical rainforests where they live.

Many of these leaves are difficult to digest and can be filled with toxins, forcing the monkeys to spend more time seeking out the right leaves to eat. It is the time spent searching—and the stress that it causes the animals— that could potentially lead to the Mexican howler monkeys becoming dying out.

The study proves that stress because of lack of food causes animals to reproduce less. This could mean many other primate (灵长类的) species are in danger from deforestation caused by humans.

28. Why does the birth rate of the howler monkeys decline?

A. The base number of their population is bigger than before.

B. They face more pressure from finding enough food.

C. Their diet is changing due to climate changes.

D. They can not sleep well due to less forest,

29. What belief did people previously hold about the howlers?

A. They think fruits and leaves are of no difference as food.

B. They often suffer from food shortage because of less fruits.

C. They changed their diet because they don’t want to leave the islands.

D. They can only live on fruits because they can’t consume leaves.

30. What’s the root cause of the drop in the monkeys' population according to the passage?

A. Climate change.

B. Natural selection.

C. Human activity.

D. Mental stress.

31. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?

A. The reduction of forest will make howler monkeys die out someday.

B. Other species in that area haven’t been much affected till now.

C. Human activity can have a big effect on natural balance.

D. Planting fruit trees in compensation will solve the problem.

D

Sometimes it’s the simplest medical inventions that save millions of lives. Meet inventors Jane Chen and Rajan Patel, and their invention—the Hug baby warmer.

Every year 20 million babies are born premature (早产的). They struggle to survive because they can’t regulate (调节) their body temperature and they don’t have enough fat on their tiny bodies to keep warm. Approximately 14% of babies born are considered low birth weight, but these babies account for 60% - 80% of neonatal (新生的) deaths.

The solution is to keep premature babies warm, but an incubator (保温箱) costs $ 20,000 and requires electricity which is difficult to find in developing countries, particularly in rural areas.

Parents take extreme solutions to keep their babies warm. They attach hot water bottles to them or place them under light bulbs, which is not only unsafe but futile.
