Over one's dead body

"Over one's dead body"

You mean you want to marry this man twice your age who's been divorced 2 times already? You'll only do it over my dead body!

In the doldrums'

所以,人们常用in the doldrums

He's been in the doldrums ever since his wife left him.

'Green-eyed monster'

----------

He was spurred on by the green-eyed monster to work like the devil.

'Haul over the coals'

----------

后来,"haul over the coals"的意思不断延伸,现在,人们用"haul somebody over the coals"来表示"责备某人"的意思。

His supervisor hauled him over the coals for coming in late for work several times a week.

'Play the sedulous ape'

----------

Many girls try to win public attention by playing the sedulous ape to Marilyn Monroe.

'Find one's sea legs'

----------

After several days on board, I found my sea legs and no longer felt seasick.

'Put on the back burner'

----------

As we did not have the money to carry out the project, we had to put it on the back burner.

'Kiss of death'

----------

"Kiss of death"

One candidate I won't support is Joseph Blow. Sure, he may be a good speaker and all that, but he's been involved in some shady business deals. Once the newspapers start digging that up, it would be the kiss of death for our whole list of candidates for the city council.

'Never-Never land'

----------

He lived in a never-never land and could hardly be expected to understand the sufferings of the poor.

'Even Steven'

----------

I returned his blows with interest, and not very honestly said, "Now we are even Steven."

'Cool one's heels'

----------

Don't make your guests cool their heels when you have appointments with them.

'Get the upper hand'

----------

After much scheming and lobbying, he got the upper hand over his opponent.

'Turn the corner'

----------

那就是"turn the corner"。

She was very ill but seems to have turned the corner now.

'Hit below the belt'

----------

Hit below the belt

It was hitting below the belt for Mr. Jones' rival to tell people about a crime that Mr. Jones committed when he was a young boy.

'Not say uncle'

----------

I don't know when he has ever said uncle to anyone.

A good sport

----------

Although he failed, I still admired him, because he was really a good sport.

'Coffin nail'

----------

Each cigarette one smokes drives one more nail into one's coffin(吸一支烟,等于给自己的棺材多钉一口钉)。

Tobacconists everywhere stick at nothing to promote the sale of their coffin nails.

'Goose bumps'

----------

I know that most snakes are harmless, but I can't help it -- every time I see a snake, even in a zoo, I get goose bumps all over!

'A cat's paw'

----------

You have been used as a cat's paw by that woman; she only wanted you to help her get into local society.

'Bite the bullet'

----------

Don't be so shy. Just bite the bullet and take the initiative in making new friends!

'Box and Cox'

----------

We shared the office in a Box and Cox arrangement.

'Under the weather'

----------

Mr. Jones, this is Sally Smith. I'm sorry, but I can't come to work today. I'm feeling a little bit under the weather.

'Nothing like leather'

----------

There is nothing like leather。 There's nothing like leather。

He is convinced that his poem will win the award. There's nothing like leather, you know.

'Up to the nines'

----------

若up to the nines与dress连用,则指"盛装"。

He was all dressed up to the nines for the interview.

'Go bananas'

----------

John is going bananas today. Nobody can tell why. But I think it might have something to do with his girlfriend.

'Sandwich generation'

----------

Older people tend to retire earlier and live longer these days. And if they don't have pensions large enough to live on, this means their children in the sandwich generation have to bear the financial burden longer.

1.Like attracts(或draws)like. (like 指similar people)这与另一句谬语「Birds of a feather flock together.」(相同羽毛的鸟在一起)意义相似。 2.(Too much) familiarity breeds contempt. 3.Once bitten(或bit),twice shy. When you have bad experience, you don't want to have the same experience again. 这不就是「一朝被蛇咬,见绳也心惊」或「一日被蛇咬,十年怕草绳」吗? 4.A stitch in time save nine. 这句警语与「An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.」(一分的预防,胜於十分的治疗)意义相近。此外,还有:「Don't wait for a rainy day to fix the roof.(不要等到下雨时才去修补屋顶); 或「Always prepare for a rainy day.」或「Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.」(做最坏的打算和最好的希望)这些警语,说的都是「未雨绸缪」。 5.Old habits die hard. 「It is difficult to break an old habit.」这与另一句谚语:「You can not teach an old dog new tricks.」(你不能教老狗新把戏)。 6.Absence makes the heart grow fonder. 「When a person is absent, we may think of him/her more often.」 7.A penny saved is a penny earned. Take care of your pennies(=pence)and the pounds (=dollars)will take care of themselves. If you save small amount of money, you will eventually have a large sum of money. 8.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
