Why do human beings still risk their lives under ground and doing one of the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in the world? It is an increasingly urgent question, given the recent mining accidents in Sago, W. Va and Huntington, Utah. A small group of engineers and robotics experts look forward to a day in the not-too-distant future when robots and other technology do most of the dangerous mining work.

Robotic technology, in particular, holds much promise, McAteer says, especially when it comes to mapping mines and rescuing trapped miners --- the special operations of the mining industry.

One of the first mining robots was developed five years ago at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics In stitute. It was called Groundhog. It used lasers(激光器) to “see” in dark tunnels and map abandoned mines—some of the most dangerous work in the business.

The latest design is called Cave Crawler. It’s a bit smaller than Groundhog, and even more advanced. It can take photos and videos and has more sensors that can detect the presence of dangerous gases. Incredibly, the robot has a real sense of logic. If it comes across an obstacle it gets momentarily confused. It has to think about what to do and where to go next. Sometimes it throws a fit just like a real person.

The greatest problem, though, is cost. The money of the earliest research project was provided by the government, but that money had dried up, and it’s not clear where future money will come from. Partly for that reason, and partly because of advances in safety, mining is not nearly as dangerous as it was in the past. Since 1990, fatalities(致命性) have declined by 67% and injuries by 51% , according to the National Mining Association.

Some experts predict that robots in mines will serve much of the same function that they do in the automotive industry. The robots do the most boring and dangerous jobs, but won’t get rid of the need for human workers.

46. The latest robot is more advanced than Groundhog, mainly because ____.

A. it can map abandoned mines

B. it can see in the dark tunnels

C. it’s smaller than Groundhog

D. it has a real sense of logic

47. The underlined phrase “throws a fit” in paragraph 4 probably means“______”

A. gets angry

B. gets sick

C. becomes hungry

D. becomes cheerful

48. We can infer from the last paragraph that _____ .

A. robots in mines will serve much in the automotive industry

B. there will be no need for human workers in mines

C. the mine robots will have a very bright future

D. robots in mines only do some simple jobs now

49. We can infer from the text that ______.

A. the mining robots do most of the mining work at present

B. groundhog can discover the presence of dangerous gases

C. experts are trying to make robots help miners with dangerous work

D. robots cannot do dangerous work in dark areas

50. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Mining Accidents in America

B. Robots in Mines

C. Cave crawler, the Latest Robot

D. The Future of Robots

New technology links the world as never before. Our planet has shrunk. It's now a "global village" where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communication equipment is greatly improved by foreign language skills.

Deeply involved with this new technology is a kind of modem businesspeople who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success

overseas often helps support home business efforts.

Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks (管理层). The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being "out of sight and out of mind." He or she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company's plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his or her ability to cope back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language issues are becoming more and more popular.

Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communication devices with business applications, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets.

English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn't generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal.

The employee posted abroad who speaks the country's official language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negotiations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. The employee at the home office who can communicate well with foreign partners over the telephone or by fax machine is an obvious asset(资产)to the firm.

51. What is the author's attitude toward high-tech communications equipment?

A. Negative.

B. Positive.

C. Prejudiced.

D. discontented.

52. With the increased use of high-tech communication equipment, business people ________.

A. are eager to work overseas

B. have to get familiar with modem technology

C. are attaching more importance to their overseas businesses

D. are gaining more economic benefits from domestic businesses

53. In paragraph 3, "out of sight and out of mind" (Line 2-3) probably means ________.

A. leaving all care and worry behind

B. being totally out of touch with business at home

C. being unable to think properly for lack of insight

D. missing opportunities for promotion when abroad

54. According to the passage, what is an important consideration of international corporations in employing people today?

A. Ability to speak the customer's language.

B. Connections with businesses over seas

C. Technical know-how.

D. Business experience.

55. The advantage of employees having foreign language skills is that they can _________.

A. fast-forward their proposals to their bosses.

B. better control the whole negotiation process

C. easily make friends with business people abroad

D. easily find new approaches to meet market needs

D

For many years there’s been a debate about rewarding our children. Does it work? Is it effective?

Some people think we should establish a standard with our kids and give them something

for meeting this standard as a reward. Punishment is given out in much the s ame way, but it’s used when certain standards of performance, behavior, etc. have not been met. Kids will often become more dutiful when threatened with punishment, and work harder when promised a valuable reward. The problem is what happens when you aren’t around.

To develop responsible, self-disciplined (自律的)kids, parents need to promote certain ideas. One of these ideas is that everyone pitches in (努力投入) and helps in your family, even if someone is not crazy about helping. Another idea is that there can be enjoyment in doing any task if we choose to make it so. When a task is for a worthy cause (our family can enjoy the house more because I have helped clean it), and when parents are cheerful about their chores, this message can have a big impact.

This is how we help our kids develop a sense of responsibility. When our children develop this responsibility, they’ll be more disciplined, and they’ll control their emotions better. When we give rewards to our kids, we reduce the sense of responsibility. We also create children who may temporarily perform to a certain standard, but who aren’t likely to continue the performance without the carrot hanging in front of them.

“Rewards and punishment can change behavior for a while, but they cannot change the person who engages in the behavior, at least in the way we want,” said Alfie Kohn, author of Punished by Rewards. “Good values have to be grown from the inside out.” Parents can help give their children a sense of shared responsibility and discipline which can last a lifetime. The real rewards that your children receive will be their readiness for the complex and demanding world that waits for them—a world that rewards those who have learned the secrets of discipline and responsibility. So keep those shiny rewarding to yourself, and _______________. 56. According to the passage, when children are threatened with punishment, .

A. they may lose interest in their work

B. they may appear to be well-behaved

C. they may change to another person

D. the results will be worse than usual

57. What can we know from Paragraph 3?

A. Parents should promote certain ideas to help children develop.

B. Children should be responsible for their discipline.

C. Children should help build a good family atmosphere.

D. No children will adapt to society without their parent s’ help.

58. Which of the following sentences can be used to end this passage?

A. let your kids find their own rewards

B. allow your kids to enjoy their punishment

C. prevent your kids from failing

D. persuade your kids into accepting who they are

59. According to the passage, Alfie Kohn would agree that parents should .

A. pay no attention to the way their children do things

B. never punish their children

C. show their children how to behave by example

D. help their children establish good values

60. What’s the best title for the passage?

A. Do You Often Reward Your Children?

B. Should Parents Reward Their Children?

C. When Should Parents Reward Their Children?[

D. What Can Parents Reward Their Children with?

[1] Every April I am worried-that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks abandoned, with gray hills, gray sky and gray forest.I felt upset,as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine l5 years ago.“Just wait,”a neighbor said.“You’ll wake up one morning and spring will just be here.”

[2] Yes! On May 3 that year I awoke to a surprising green,as if spring were simply a matter of pressing a switch.Hills, sky and forest grew their purples, blues and green. Then there was the old apple tree.It sits on an undeveloped area in my neighborhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. Each spring it blooms and the air becomes filled with the aroma(香气)of the flowers. When I drive by with my windows rolled down,it gives me the feeling of moving in another world.

[3]One day last year,I set out with tools to prune(修剪)the apple tree.No sooner had I arrived under it than neighbors opened their windows. These were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to,but it was as if I had broken into their gardens. One of them was the first to speak.“You’re not cutting it down, are you?’’Another neighbor looked a bit angry.“Don’t kill it,now,”he shouted.Soon half the neighborhood had joined me under the apple tree.It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names...

[4]The apple tree incident turned out to be a good start.Just the other day I saw one of my neighbors at the local store. He remarked how this winter had been especially long and

regretted not having seen or spoken to anyone in our neighborhood. And then,he looked at me and said,“ that apple tree again.”

写作:

From the picture we can see a family of three walking on a long red carpet. The son, well dressed, waves proudly in the middle while the father behind bends forward to hold the jacket and the mother in front rolls out the carpet, sweating.

It shows a common phenomenon nowadays that children are the focus of families, shouldering the hope of their parents.Parents arrange everything for their children and spare no effort to pave the way for their success. As a consequence, children become so reliant on their parents that they have no independent thought or creative ideas.

Such a situation is of great concern. In my opinion, overprotection and too much care are extremely bad for children's development.Instead of doing everything for them, parents should encourage their children to overcome difficulties and inspire them to develop by themselves.Only in this way can they grow up to be independent and become truly successful.

英语五种基本句型列式如下: 一:SV(主+谓) 二:SVP(主+系+表) 三:SVO(主+谓+宾) 四:SVoO(主+谓+间宾+直宾) 五:SVOC(主+谓+宾+宾补) 基本句型一:SV(主+谓) 主语:可以作主语的成分有名词(如boy),主格代词(如you),动词不定式,动名词等。 S│V(不及物动词) 1. The sun │was shining. 2. The moon │rose. 3. The universe │remains. 4. We all │breathe, eat, and drink. 5. Who │cares? 6. What he said │does not matter. 7. They │talked for half an hour. 8. The pen │writes smoothly 系动词分两类:be, look, keep, seem等属一类,表示情况;get, grow, become, turn等属另一类,表示变化。 This │is │an English-Chinese dictionary. 2. The dinner │smells │good. 3. He │fell │in love. 4. Everything │looks │different. 5. He │is growing │tall and strong. 6. The trouble│is │that they are short of money. 7. Our well │has gone │dry. 8. His face │turned │red. There be 结构:There be 表示‘存在有’。 There is a boy there.(那儿有一个男孩。)
