Dogs, are desperate more than almost any other domesticated species, for human eye contact. It's hard for most people to resist a flash of puppy-dog eyes 一and according to a new study, that pull on the heartstrings might be exactly why dogs can give us those looks at all.
Dogs differ from their wolf relatives 一specifically, gray wolves 一as many as 33, 000 years ago. Studying the two animals is a bit like cracking open a four-legged time capsule. A paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that dogs' faces are structured for complex expression in a way that wolves' aren't.
For the study, a team looked at two muscles that work together to widen and open a dog's eyes, causing them to appear bigger, droopier (耸拉的),and objectively cuter. But in the four gray wolves the researchers looked at, neither muscle was present.
Research has also shown that when dogs work these muscles, humans respond more positively. This isn't simply an accidental love story, in which the eyes of two species just so happen to meet across a crowded planet. Like all the best partnerships, this one is more likely the result of years of evolution and growth.
For a species to change quickly, a pretty powerful force must be acting on it. And that's where humans come in. We connect deeply with animals capable of broadening the size and width of their eyes, which makes them look like our own human babies and "awaken" our nurturing (养育) instincts.
"These muscles evolved during domestication," says Brian Hare, the editor of the paper, "but almost certainly due to an advantage they gave dogs during interactions with humans that we humans have been almost unaware of."

Little heralds (预示) the arrival of summer like the smell of open water, smoky grills and sunscreen (防晒霜).
The American Academy of Dermatology’s official position on sunscreen, which is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, is that everyone, regardless of skin tone, should wear it because, "anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender (性别) or race."
But because people of color are often left out of clinical trials and treatments, there is very little research available about dark-skinned people and skin cancer.
Medicine is about balancing risks, and it turns out that the benefits and risks of wearing sunscreen when you have dark skin can be unclear. Many experts believe that there is no clear link between sun exposure and skin cancer among people with dark skin, and there is also a growing body of research to suggest that using certain types of sunscreen may actually be harmful, no matter who uses it.
There are two broad categories of sunscreen. The first is mineral. This type of sunscreen is considered safe by the FDA, as long as it is not in powder form.
The second category is chemical. There is no agreement among scientists that the active ingredients in many chemical sunscreens, including oxybenzone, are safe. In fact, there's new evidence suggesting that they may carry their own health risks.
A pilot study that the FDA released earlier this year in the Journal of American Medical Academy caused a stir because it found that when participants applied a day's worth of common sunscreens, they not only absorbed its chemicals but did so at levels that exceeded (超过) a target FDA toxicology (毒理学) threshold. "Although over-the-counter sunscreen products are widely used, little is known about systemic exposure for most active ingredients," the FDA said in a written statement.

Scientists have suggested trapping carbon dioxide (CO2) in rocks as one way to slow the rate of climate change. But All their proposed ways appeared to be difficult, costly or require too much energy. Until now, anyway, researchers in Canada have just proposed a new technology to collect and trap the greenhouse gas.
Limestone and other minerals already store a lot of carbon dioxide on Earth, notes Ian Power, a geoscientist at Trent University in Peterborough, Canada. The problem: This natural process is slow. It can take thousands or even millions of years. At present, he explains, "We're emitting so much CO2 now that Earth can't keep up."
But Power’s team has just reported a way to quickly do what nature does slowly. A mineral called magnesite (菱镁矿) locks up CO2. A metric ton of this mineral can store about half a metric ton of CO2. The chemical normally takes thousands of years to form. But in their lab, Power's group made it happen in just a few months.
Scientists can combine rocks and CO2, using lots of heat in the lab. That could make the mineral quickly — but only by using a lot of costly energy, Power says. But unless you do, he adds, the magnesite will take a very long time to form.
So far, the scientists have made only a tiny amount of magnesite in the lab. Their total 一one microgram 一is about one millionth the weight of a paper clip. So the process needs a lot of improvement before it can begin trapping the millions of tons of CO2 produced each year, Powers says.
But a big concern has been hurdled, he says. They’ve shown that it is possible to do this at room temperature and pressure. Now the team can explore how to make the process more efficient.
"The result really surprised me," says Patricia Dove, a geochemist at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. It’s not clear how costly or efficient this process might be, she says. But she finds it “certainly very interesting.”

英语学科试卷分析 本次英语试卷的出题学校是鞍山一中，试题难度适中，符合目前我们学生的 学情，除了完形填空一题偏难之外，其他题目同学们都能正常发挥。在这次试卷 中，同学们最容易得分的部分是语法填空，改错还有作文。此次作文题目出的中 规中矩，让同学们有话可说，有句型可写，所以普遍得分在15 分以上。而失分 最多的部分是完形填空，因为文章内容抽象，选项中生词偏多，所以对于词汇量 一般的同学来说正确率只能达到百分之六十。此次考试，教师也和同学们同步答题，反应也和同学们一样，觉得完型对于现阶段的同学来说还是偏难，在理解上 有较大的困难。但是在此次考试中，也不乏有得高分的同学，最高分达到了142 分，文科前四十分的平均分也到达了120 分以上，与兄弟院校差距较小。由此说明英语尖子生还是非常的突出。 目前英语试卷的高考题采用的是全国卷二，难度较以往偏简单，但是拉分的 项目还是在于完形填空，因此在此题的难度设置上会有所提高，而此次试卷的出 题意图也和高考试卷的命题方向不谋而合。 针对现阶段高考命题的思路，下一步的工作还是要从扩大学生词汇量上入手， 夯实基础，在此之上，要加大学生的阅读量，巩固语法知识。除了要进行每周的 周测之外，还有有步骤的对全年级同学进行单词的测试。与此同时，还要提高作 文的写作能力。将阅读课与写作课相结合，从阅读中，获得灵感，启发写作思路， 积累句型。在接下来的一年半中，英语学科已经进入复习阶段，会让学生们更进 一步夯实基础，再对单项进行强化，达到质的飞跃。但是对于层次不同的同学，还 是要采取不同的教学方法。 100 份以上的同学，要强化阅读和完型，平时多布置这 方面的习题，把阅读错题量控制在两个以内，完型控制在三个以内。一百分以下 的同学，还是要加大词汇量，语法上进行强化。对于英语学科瘸腿的同学， 要进行单独约谈，从心理上着手，让他们克服心理障碍，改变学习态度，争取做 得更好。
