Every weekend when Maggie visited her grandfather, he gave her some butterscotch candies (奶油硬糖).

My name is Jennifer. I lived with my parents and my brother. It started on the first day of June. We were bored, so Dad thought we should have a barbecue.

The next day, Dad got a new barbecue grill (烧烤架). On the third day, my mother and I went to the market, shopping for the barbecue. When we came back, there was a policeman standing at our door.

A scary earthquake (地震) happened in Nepal on April 25th, 2015. Nearly 4,000 people have been killed and thousands of people were injured. A lot of buildings were destroyed. Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, is only about50 miles away from the earthquake’s epicenter (震中). Many parts of the city were destroyed by the earthquake.

“It was so scary,” says Nikita Thapa, a woman who lives in Kathmandu.

The earthquake also caused an avalanche (雪崩) on Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰), the w orld’s tallest mountain. The avalanche killed at least 18 people.

Now it is important to provide enough basics (基本需要) of life, such as tents, food, and water to for people in the troubled area. Sending food and water to the troubled area is difficult because of the widespread damage.

Rescuers (救援人员) have been pouring in to bring supplies to the country, which was poor and without many resources

even before the earthquake. Those rescuers are also working to find the missing and help the injured.

It’s a race against time to rescue people. But the aftershocks (余震) are making rescue efforts challenging. “There have been nearly 100 aftershocks. They make rescue work difficult,” says an official in Kathmandu. “Even the rescuers are scared and running because of th em.”
