(CNN) —A 12 -year-old girl who had a feeling that she might be quite clever has taken a test and proved she was absolutely right.

After raising the idea with her parents and pestering (纠缠)them for the best part of a year, Lydia took the test in her summer holidays. It turns out the test wasn't that hard after all.

"I was really nervous before the test and I thought it was going to be really hard. But as I started the test, I thought it was a bit easier than I thought it was going to be," she said.

Lydia Sebastian achieved the top score of 162 on Mensa’s Catte ll III B paper, showing she has a higher IQ than well-known geniuses Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. The comparison doesn't sit well with the British student, who’s currently in Year 8 at a selective girl’s grammar school in Essex, England.

"I don't think I can be compared to such great intellectuals as Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. They’ve achieved so much. I don’t think it’s right," Lydia told CNN.

To explain Lydia’s mark’s level, the top adult score in the Cattell III B test, which mainly tests verbal(语言) reasoning, is 161. A top 2% score 一which allows entry to Mensa, the club for those with high IQs 一would be 148 or over. Lydia scored 162, placing her in the top 1% of the population.

Lydia’s not quite sure what she wants to do when she leaves school, although

she’s leaning toward something "based around Maths, because it’s one of my favorite subjects. " "All I’m going to do is work as hard as I can, and see where that gets me," she said.

24.Why did Lydia want to have an IQ test because_______,

A. No one has achieved a higher IQ than Lydia,

B. Whoever has a high IQ can enter Mensa.

C. Only adults with high IQs can enter Mensa.

D. Mensa is a club for those with high IQs at least 148.

Climate change, global warming, the greenhouse effect …these days nobody denies(否认) that there is something strange and worrying happening to the atmosphere. Scientists are puzzled by the rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. They are also afraid that the world may be a short way from what they consider as uncontrolled global warming.

At Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, meteorologists(气象专家) have been carefully monitoring (监测)the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere for the past 50 years. Until recently, there has been a gradual increase of around 1.5 parts per million (ppm). In 2013 the figure rose to 2.08 ppm and in the following year they recorded an increase of 2.54 ppm.

Climate analysts feel that it is too soon to draw conclusions about the phenomenon although the public are concerned that the carbon dioxide emissions are getting out of control. Jason Samenow, the chief meteorologist in the A merican National Weather Service, thinks that people might have only a few years to find a solution to the problem instead of having decades. He believes that the Earth’s natural systems for absorbing the gas are breaking down ,resulting in the uncontrolled greenhouse effect. He insists that something could happen if the Earth’s temperatures rose to such a degree that it was unable to contain the heat.

However, one interesting aspect of this climate change is that it is not happening in a uniform way around the world. Carbon dioxide levels in the South Pole are obviously lower. This suggests that something has happened in the northern

hemisphere(半球) that set off the rise. Forest fires in North America might hold the answer to the puzzle, along with very hot summers in Europe.

The 2014 heat wave was certainly out of the ordinary. Statistics claim that more than 30,000 people lost their lives as a direct result of the high temperatures. Scientists are being cautious in their interpretations. Most feel that it is too soon to say that a new trend has been set. All agree that the phenomenon needs to be closely observed.

28. According to Paragraph 1,what puzzles scientists?

A. Something strange and worry ing in life.

B. Uncontrolled global warming.

C. The effects of climate change on everybody.

D. The increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

29. From the changing amount of the carbon dioxide in the recent 50 years,we can learn that ___

A.Our world may be soon faced with uncontrolled globlal warming.

B.The amount of the carbon dioxide in the atomasphere is increasing sharply.

C.It is too soon to conclude global warming is now out of control.

D.Every year the changes of the carbon dioxide is the same.

30. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A. North and South differences in climate change.

B. Low temperatures in the South Pole.

C. Hot summers in Europe.

D.Forest fires in North America.

31. How will scientists deal with the high temperatures?

A.By giving a solution directly.

B. By observing the phenomenon closely.

C. By experiencing high temperatures personally.

D. By setting a new trend soon.

D

You get anxious if there’s no wi-fi in the hotel or mobile phone signal up the mountain. You feel upset if your phone is getting low on power and you secretly worry things will go wrong at work if you’re not there. All these can be called “always on”stress caused by smart phone addiction.

For some people, smart phones have liberated them from the nine-to-five work. Flexible working has given them more autonomy in their working lives and enabled them to spend more time with their friends and families. For many others ,though, smart phones have become cruel masters in their pockets, never allowing them to turn them off and relax.

Pittsburgh-based developer Kevin Holesh was worried about how much he was ignoring his family and friends in favor of his iPhone. So he developed an app —Moment —to monitor his usage. The app enables users to see how much time they’re spending on the device and set up warnings if the usage limits are broken. “Moment’s goal is to promote balance in your life,”his website explains. “Some time on your phone, some time off it enjoying your loving family and friends around

you.”

Dr. Christine Grant, an occupational psychologist at Coventry University, said, “The effects of this ‘always on’culture are that your mind is never resting, and you’re not giving your body time to recover, so you’re always stressed. And the more tired and stressed we get, the more mistakes we make. physical and mental health can suffer.”

And as the number of connected smart phones is increasing, so is the amount of data. This is leading to a sort of decision paralysis (瘫痪) and is creating more stress in the workplace because people have to receive a broader range of data and communications which are often difficult to manage. “It actually makes it more difficult to make decisions and many do less because they’re controlled by it all and feel they can never escape the office,”said Dr. Christine Grant.

32. What’s the first paragraph mainly about?

A. The popularity of smart phones.

B. The cause of smart phone addiction.

C. The progress of modern technology.

D. The signs of “always on”stress.

33. Kevin Holesh developed Moment to __________.

A. research how people use their mobile phones

B.make people better use mobile phones

C. help people control their use of mobile phones

D. increase the fun of using mobile phones

34. What’s Dr. Christine Grant’s attitude towards “always on”culture?

A. Critical.

B. Positive.

C. Doubtfu l.

D. Confused.

35. According to the last paragraph, a greater amount of data means __________.

A. we can make a decision more quickly

B. we will become less productive

C. we will be equipped with more knowledge

D. we can work more effectively

On-line voting becomes increasingly popular, and many competitions get people involve in it. It is beneficial to som e people, so it puts others into a dilemma In my opinion, on-line voting is only part of our modern life and should be welcomed, since it is no more than a way to participate on public life. It makes no differences from ordinary voting events, in which candidates(候选人) go around to seek supports. In addition, the Internet made surveying and voting easy and

conveniently, regardless of time and space. Furthermore, voting on the Internet makes instant feedback(反馈)possible.

However, voters sometimes feel annoying, not because they hate voting, but because we are divided between emotion and fairness. Things will turn for the better if we can work out some rules for people to obey them. Therefore, I hold a positive attitude towards on- line voting.
