Want a light that will outlast the century and illuminate(照亮) a child’s homework from kindergarten through high school? Two small Silicon Valley companies unveiled an electronic bulb(电灯泡)that uses radio waves to produce 20,000 hours of light, which translates into something like 14 years of average use. Intersource Technologies Inc. and Diablo Research Corp. said their new E-lamp, which fits standard sockets and uses 75% less electricity than ordinary bulbs, will cost from $10 for residential use to $20 for commercial applications when the bulbs become available next year in the U.S.

Intersource estimates that a single E-lamp could save homeowners anywhere from $50 to $100 in electric bills over a 15-to-20-year period. A standard 100-watt incandescent bulb costs 75c in America and burns as long as 250 days. With a standard bulb, only 5% of the electricity is converted to light—the rest is wasted and away as heat. ”Until now, there has been no substantial improvement in lighting since the time of Thomas Edison,” boasts Intersource president Pierre Villere.

The big name in American bulbs, General Electric, claims to have developed the equivalent technology two decades ago, but chose not to pursue it. (Perhaps ironically, one of the company’s long-established mottoes ”GE, we bring good things to life.”) In 1986 GE executives toured Diablo Research and examined the E-lamp project. This occurred well before Intersource obtained the marketing rights to the new product. But GE dismissed the idea that there was a market for a $20 light bulb.

A. the new bulb is a great achievement in lighting

A useful tool in achieving a sense of emotional truth onstage is what Stanislavski(斯坦尼斯拉夫斯基) referred to as emotional recall, which is the remembering of a past experience in the performer’s life that is similar to the one in the play. By recalling sensory impressions of an experience in the past (such as what a room looked like, any prevalent odors, any contact with objects),emotions—from that time—are aroused and can be used as the basis of feelings called for in the play.

A good example would be a scene of farewell, such as Emily saying good-bye to her family in Thornton Wilder’s our Town. Though dead, Emily is allowed to go back to earth for one day, after which she must leave forever. The actress playing Emily might recall a time in her own life when she had to say good-bye and was reluctant to do so—the first time she left home, perhaps, or the time she said good-bye to a young man she loved. Again, Stanislavski emphasizes details, the important thing for the actress to remember is where she was, what she wore, who she was with—not how she felt. From these concrete facts and images the feeling will follow. In Stanislavski’s words:

On the stage there cannot be, under any circumstances, action which is directed immediately at the arousing of a feeling for it s own sake…All such feelings are the result of something that has gone on before. Of the thing that goes before, you should think as hard as you can. As for the result, it will produce itself.

21. Emotional recall helps the performer_________.

A. to remember his past experience

B. to think about his old home

C. to pick up the emotions the character has in the play

D. to compare his life with the character’s in the play.

22. Stanislavski is ______.

A. a great playwright

B. an authority on acting

C. an actor performing Our Town

D. the writer’s close friend

23. When Emily says goodbye to her family in Wilder’s play, she must be_________.

A. very sad

B. very happy

C. very excited

D. very angry

24. The actress playing Emily should recall all the following in her life EXCEPT________.

A. her friends

B. her clothes

C. her house

D. her feelings

25. In the last sentence, “it will produce itself” means__________.

A. something will happen in due cause

B. one’s acting will be perfect at last

C. a special effect will be produced on the stage.

D. the feelings will come naturally

III. Translating (Chinese to English or English to Chinese)(4×5=20)1.

IV. Writing.(1×20=20)

When you grow up, you remember many persons that have relationship with you who are respectable, warm-hearted, handsome or gentle, beautiful or pretty. So now you can recall their names or your relationships when you were young. And write a short article for them. Give the article a nice title as you like.

Unit1 Some Strategies or Learning English I'm interested in English",而说"我精于法语"则是"I'm good at French"?你可曾问过自己,为什么以英语为母语的人说"获悉消息或秘密"是"learn the news or secret",而"获悉某人的成功或到来"却是"learn of someone's success or arrival"?

Online HomeWork_U1B3 I. Reading Comprehension Section A Fast Reading Back in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children. Just to keep food on the table for the family members, the father worked almost eighteen hours a day. Two of Albrecht Durer the Elder’s children, Albrecht and Albert, wanted to pursue talent for art, but they knew that their father would never be financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the academy. After many discussions, the two boys decided to toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the coin toss completed his studies, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with the sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in the mines. They tossed a coin after coming back from church on a Sunday morning. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and financed his brother, whose work at the academy was an almost immediate sensation. Albrecht’s etchings (版画), woodcuts (木刻画) and oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works. When Albrecht Durer returned to his village, the family held a big dinner to celebrate Albrecht’s homecoming. After the meal, Albrecht rose to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition. He said, “Albert, now it is your turn to go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you.” Albert rose and glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and said softly, “No, brother. Look what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis (关节炎) so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on canvas (画布) with a brush.” By now, Albrecht Durer’s hundreds of masterful portraits, sketches and woodcuts hang in every great museum in the world, but most people are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer’s works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office. To pay homage to Albert, Albrecht Durer drew his brother’s hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his drawing “Hands,” but the entire world immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and named it “The Praying Hands.” Statements based on the passage: T 1. Section B Passage Reading Passage 1 Valentine’s Day probably has its origin in the ancient Roman celebration called Lupercalia(牧神节). It was celebrated on February 15. In the Roman calendar February was in the spring. The celebration honored the gods Lupercus and Faunus as well as the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. As part of the ceremony the priests paired up young men and women. The girls’ names were placed in a box and each boy drew a girl’s name. The couple was paired then until the next Lupercalia. In 260 AD the emperor Claudius II, called Claudius the Cruel, decided that young soldiers would only be distracted by marriage and so ordered that young men may not marry. Valentinus (Valentine), a Christian priest, defied the emperor and got married in secret. He was caught and executed on February 14, the eve of Lupercalia. His name became associated with young love forever after. In 496, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor him as Saint Valentine and it has been St. Valentine’s Day ever since. In the Middle Ages some of the customs of the Lupercalia still persisted in spite of the attempts of the Church to put an end to these non-Christian customs and Christianize the holiday. Both men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear the names on their sleeves for a week. Today we still sometimes “wear our hearts on our sleeves” when we cannot conceal our feelings. In the 1600s, it became common to give flowers, particularly the rose, as a sign of love as the “language of flowers”. This came to Europe from Turkey. The color and placement of the rose held a special significance--a red rose, for example, meant beauty. Flowers have been part of Valentine’s Day ever since. D 11.
