Nicolai Calabria has already become one of the best 106-pound wrestlers.He has successfully climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Africa,and most importantly,he’s changed the attitude of any normal person who watches him compete.

A girl in Danville,Pennsylvania is recovering at home from a spinal(脊柱的)operation.But she isn’t missing any school.Instead,she is keeping up with her peers by using a remote-controlled robot.

The robot was invented by Double Robotics,of Seattle.It was bought by the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit and loaned to the middle school.Maddie Rarig,11,a sixth-grader,is now able,from her bed,to be in her math and English classes in real time.She can interact with her teachers,and—perhaps more importantly—her classmates.

“We call the robot Maddie,because it is very much her in the classroom,”said her math teacher,Shayna Heitzelman.“We positioned the face of the robot where she can see everything going on in front of the class.Maddie can move closer or farther away as needed.She can turn the robot around to face the class.The thing is,and this is amazing,she has this huge smile on her face, which you can see on the robot.And the kids,her friends,love it.”

The robot is basically a Segway body with an iPad brain serving as its eyes.Maddie is able to control the forward,backward,left or right movement of the robot from home using a smartphone or computer.

When the class breaks into discussion groups,Maddie can be part of the group.She can interact with her fellow students,just as if she were physically in the classroom,Heitzelman said.

“I wish this technology had been available two years ago,”said Maddie’s

Every day in the United States animals are beaten,neglected(忽视),or forced to struggle for survival.Left in deplorable conditions,they have little hope as they live out their days without the compassion(同情)they deserve.We must fight for these abused animals’ rights and severely punish heartless owner.

One of the first steps in protecting animals and creating effective cruelty laws is knowing what animal cruelty actually is.There are two categories:passive cruelty and active cruelty.The first means the abuse happens as a result of neglect or lack of action.Passive cruelty might seem less serious,but that is not the case;it can lead to terrible pain and suffering,and ultimately death.Examples include starvation,dehydration(脱水),inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions,and the failure to get medical care.

Active cruelty,on the other hand,is more well known and disturbing.Sometimes referred to as non-accidental injury,this type of abuse involves purposefully causing harm to an animal in order to feel more powerful or gain control.Active cruelty against animals should be taken very seriously,since it can be a sign that a person has serious psychological issues and may commit more acts of violence.

It is hard to tell just what drives people to harm innocent animals.According to a study,animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than others.It is vital to report people who hurt animals.While not all animal abusers become serial killers, it is important to treat every case seriously.
