阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文章后的表格中填入恰当的单词。注意:表格中的每个空格只填1个单词。

Talk about happiness

We should not hesitate too much during the first half of our lives, while we should not regret at what we’ve done during the other half. We should seize every opportunity to find a way out in our lives, for it goes off swiftly. We should say something urgent slowly, something serious clearly, something small humorously and something unsure cautiously. We should never say something that did not happen, something that you cannot do, something that does harm to others, and something that is disgusting. We should tell others our happiness on specific occasions and should not tell anyone our unhappiness. Do not easily say something about others. We should follow our own heart and interest, and do what we should do instead of merely paying lip service and looking forward to the future.

Everyone is longing for a happy life, but owning wealth does not necessarily mean owning happiness. To truly reach happiness, we need to know how to get on with others. So we need to understand what happiness is really about and achieve what we desire.

We need to know and understand happiness before we finally get it. A smart man must know to do something good even though it may be small, and not to do something bad even though it may be tiny in the course. As long as we keep a kind heart and do everything morally and legally, we can live a peaceful life. But if we keep an evil heart and do whatever we want, we are indeed digging a tomb for ourselves. A smart man knows to learn a lesson from his falls, for he knows that every setback(挫折)is a precious experience leading to happiness in the future. He tends to spend more time seeking his own happiness. He knows to keep a heart of conscience and not to spread others’ mistakes. He also knows to think before he goes so that he will not feel regretful afterwards. Moreover, he knows to tolerate others, so he can naturally lead a happy life.

Without happiness, one will feel terribly sad, for he always insists that he has done the right thing all the time and that others often do wrong to him. He blames every mistake on others or the environment instead of reflecting on himself, which keeps him farther and farther away from happiness. A famous man once said, ―Nobody intends to make mistakes. One makes mistakes because of his ignorance.‖ Therefo re, if someone makes mistakes, we need to care about him, forgive him and make him happy by setting a good example to him instead of losing temper and hating him. Otherwise, we are also ignorant like him, for we also make a stupid mistake that leads us farther from happiness.

In order to possess a happy life, we need to know more about others, about society, about our culture and history. We should be patriotic(爱国的), obey the law and realize our own responsibility, and then we will certainly have a happy life.

The reason why science exists is to improve our lives. Sometimes science can ruin our small guilty pleasures we nature to be happier, though. These four little truths are just some of those.

Sleeping with pets is a good way to catch the plague(瘟疫), or some other bacterial infections, as is claimed in the study done in February 2011 in Emerging Infectious Diseases magazine. The study shares a case of a nine-year-old boy whose cat caught the plague a nd gave it to its owners while they were sharing a bed. A regular visit to the vet can greatly reduce the risk of your pet catching any disease that may infect the owner as well.

A recent study done on 200,000 people has shown that vitamin supplements do nothing to improve our lives, and what is worse—they actively increase our death risk. This conclusion

from 2010 was so unbelievable that it made researchers do even more studies. Each study had the same result. People who choose vitamin supplements over fruit and vegetables are the same as people who choose to eat a burger over a healthy salad.

People who use the solarium(日光浴室)experience certain changes to their brains that are very similar to many caused by drug addiction. According to a study, our brain can in fact recognize the difference between the natural UV light and the solarium.

Long exposure to artificial light during the night is directly linked to a higher risk of breast cancer, obesity and depression. Exposure to artificial light before sleeping disturbs the natural biorhythms(生物节奏)of our bodies, which leads to restriction on the hormone(荷尔蒙)melatonin, which is the hormone that helps us fall asleep.

第二节

Does beauty really make much sense?

Last week in our English class, we had a very heated discussion on the topic—does beauty

really make much sense? Some students think that a good face is a pass. Good appearance often makes a big difference in social communication, social competition, job hunting and so on. Not only can it make you become more confident but also it makes you impressive in the job interview.

Other students hold different opinions. Good appearance doesn’t make any difference. Spiritual beauty is more important. A beautiful person is not necessarily one with good looking, but one with a great talent and kind heart.

As far as I am concerned, both physical beauty and spiritual beauty are very important. What I want to say is that we should never ignore our spiritual beauty training while simply

pursuing good appearance.

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?

In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.

In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.

Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.

In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?

One possible version:

Recently we find that quite a few students cheat in every monthly exam although our school stresses honesty in exams over and over again.

Some students think lower marks make them lose faces before teachers and parents. While others think some teachers are not so strict that they can easily get chances to cheat. At the same time, a few of them say that they can’t control themselves in exams even though they didn’t intend to do so.

There is no doubt that cheating is bad for our study. On the one hand, it is unfair for every one; On the other hand, it makes students become lazy in study, which may lead to a bad study atmosphere in classes.

The United States has announced a plan to fight the quickly growing threat from cyber spies and Internet attackers known as hackers. America's Attorney General Eric Holder recently said that ever - improving technology is making it easier for people and countries to strike at the United States.

Mister Holder said the Justice Department is fighting back aggressively. He said it is working with various states and government agencies to find and bring to justice those involved in cyber theft and cyber espionage(谍报活动). And, the attorney general called for increased co-operation with private companies. He described the importance of keeping trade secrets a secret.

Attorney General Eric Holder: "A single trade secret can be worth millions – or even billions –of dollars. Trade secret theft can require companies to lay off employees, close factories, to lose

sales and profits, to experience a decline in competitive position and advantage, or even to go out of business."

The new policy also calls for fines and trade actions against individuals and countries that target American trade secrets.

The plan was announced the day after the American information security company Mandiant published the findings of its investigation of cyber-attacks. It reports that more than 140 companies have been attacked since 2006. The targets include some of the biggest companies in the United States, companies like Apple Computer, Facebook, Lockheed Martin, CocaCola and many others.

In addition to companies and banks, the hackers are also reported to strike state, federal and international agencies and organizations. Among the areas targeted are satellites, information technology, telecommunications, aerospace, public administration and scientific research.

安徽省马鞍山二中安师大附中2013—2014学年度第一学期期中The Internet company Google is testing its newest high-tech device, Google Glass.

The company describes the glasses as wearable computers that would change the way people view others and the world.

The glasses can make and receive calls, send and receive texts, take pictures, record video or search the web. You control Google Glass using your voice, and a touchpad on the right arm of the frame.

Professor Marcia Dawkins is among a select group of people who have been given a chance to test out Google Glass."I thought this is something I definitely need for my classroom and hopefully for my personal life too."

The Professor's Google Glass looks like a bright orange glasses, without the actual glass. But there's a tiny rectangular glass at the top right-hand corner. Through that glass, she has been recording video while biking. She also has been able to talk to her sister in Thailand, and she plans to use the device to teach a public speaking class.

But not everyone is excited about Google Glass. Some are concerned about possible risks to privacy. John Simpson is the director of the privacy project at Consumer Watchdog."It is essentially going to allow people to come in and spy on you and record that, without you knowing what is going on."www.

Google says that it has already addressed that concern. Mr Dale explained that in order to start the camera or record a video, the owner must say something out loud. "I activate the device, and say 'Okay, glass, take a picture.' Similarly, I have to push a little button on the top here so everybody around me will know a picture is being taken and a video is being recorded."

But Filmmaker Chris Barrett showed just how easy it is to record people without them knowing it. His glass captured a man getting arrested after a fight. He shared the video on YouTube.

Also some are concerned about the use of facial recognition technology on Google Glass. But Google says it will not approve the use of such applications. The Internet company says it is still testing its new device, and it hopes to make Google Glass available to the public by early next year.

The one-child policy has been adopted in China. And it does benefit not only

the society but also individuals. With a better control of the population, the

country has made remarkable achievements in the aspects of economic and social

development while the family can focus on the only child and afford better education

for him.

However, it still brings about a series of problems. As the center attention

of families, the only children are easily spoiled by their parents and grandparents.

Therefore, they are often selfish and lacking in independence.

As t he only child in my family, I think it’s important for us to cultivate our

independence and develop a strong sense of responsibility since we are the future

of our country. We can share some housework with our parents and should keep it in

mind that it’s better to give than to receive.
