Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,” she replied. But for long I have been accustomed to such responses, and become convinced that the_seeing_see_little.

How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I—who cannot see, find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry(对称) of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch(银桦树), or the rough bark of a pine. In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening nature after her winter's sleep. I feel the delightful, smooth texture of a flower, and discover i ts remarkable swirl(旋动); and something of the miracle of nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happiness of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have cool waters of a stream rush through my open fingers. To me a rich carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug(波斯毛毯). To me the circle of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams throu gh my finger tips. At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The whole picture of color and action filling the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light, the gift of sight is used only as mere convenience rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.

36.What does the author imply by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

A.If one is always using his eyes, he would have poor eyesight. B.The sighted people sometimes fail to discover beautiful things. C.The blind people see no less than the sighted ones. D.When one tries to see, he always sees nothing.

37.Which of the following is NOT an example given to show how the nature interests the author?

A.The delicate symmetry (对称) of a leaf.

B.The delightful, smooth texture of a flower.

C.The happiness of a bird in full song.

D.The most luxurious Persian rug.

38.What does the author think is the reason why sighted people fail to discover the beauty of nature?

A.That they long for that which they have not.

B.That what they have is usually taken for granted.

C.That the gift of sight is a means of adding fullness to life. D.That mere touch is the best way to discover and feel. 39.What is the passage mainly about?

A.It tries to prove that the seeing see little.

B.It describes how wonderful the nature is.

C.It tells people to protect their eyesight.

D.It expresses some thoughts on feeling beauty and sight.

American society reports many negative messages about bicycling in traffic. Bicycling in traffic is considered by many to be reckless(匆忙的), foolhardy(草率的), and sometimes rude. The most common advice given to cyclists is to avoid busy roads that provide convenient access to important places; presumably(据推测)cyclists should only go to unpopular destinations on undesirable and inconvenient roads. Another popular idea is that cyclists should stay as close to the edge of the road as possible in order to stay out of the way of cars. Getting in the way of cars is supposedly an invitation to certain death, because car drivers are often expected to run into anything that is slower or more vulnerable(易受伤的).The rules of the road that apply to bicyclists are considered to be of no use because they involve mixed with motor traffic, which is thought to be suicide. Roads are believed to be designe d for cars and not for bicycles, which are tolerated at the pleasure of motorists, who really own the roads. Inferior bicyclists may have an obsolete(不可再用的) legal right to use the road, but they had better stay out of the way of superior users or they will be “dead right”.

As a result of these “common-sense” beliefs, American bike-safety programs d eveloped by motoring organizations and “pedestrian-style” bicyclists during the twentieth century attempted to teach cyclists to provide a clear path to motorists at all times by hugging the edge of the road, riding on sidewalks so cyclists can see when to get out of the way. Some towns and states tried to prohibit bicyclists from operating on important roads or roads without shoulders. Engineering projects designed for “bicycle safety” have usually involved construction of mandatory(强制的)side paths to get cyclists off of roads and mandatory bike lanes to keep cyclists out of the way of motorists.

The publicized benefit of these efforts is to protect cyclists from

co llisions from behind, which are widely believed to be the greatest danger to cyclists and caused by

cyclists'_failure_to_keep_up_with_the_desired_speed_of_motor_tr affic. This is the taboo that afflicts American bicycle transportation policy: bicyclists must be kept out of the paths of motorists or they will surely be killed.

16.In many people's eyes, bicycle should be ________.A.supported B.banned C.controlled D.cancelled 17.From the first paragraph, the person riding a bicycle in the city should take ________.

A.main roads B.streets D.highways D.sidewalks 18.Why do many people disagree that people should ride on roads?

A.Roads are for cars not for cyclists.

B.People riding bicycles are considered inferior.

C.People's riding on the road is against the law.

D.People riding bicycles are not experienced.

19.The underlined phrase “cyclists' failure to keep up with the desired speed of motor traffic” in the second paragraph means ________.

A.cyclists' speed is beyond the limit

B.cyclists' speed is much lower than that of motorists' and they easily get hurt

C.cyclists often compete with motorists on the roads D.motorists usually look down upon cyclists

20.The measures taken by government in some states in the second paragraph are for the purpose of ________.A.protecting people's convenience

Throughout the world, bus travel is one of the cheapest ways to get around. Taking a bus from country to country or in between cities can be a budget-friendly way t o travel, but there's a reason why bus travel isn't more popular. Unlike flying, bus travel is qu ite slow, and unlike train travel or renting a car and driving, buses can be uncomfortable, which is a reason that many people cite for not taking buses more often.

Those who have traveled long distances by bus will know that while on a bus, passengers are largely at the mercy of the bus driver. Airplanes are equipped with drinks and clean, usable restrooms, but bus travelers often don't have access to these luxuries. So, when nature calls, or if you run out of water and food or need to stretch your legs, you have to wait for the drivers to decide it's time for a break.

The infrequent nature of stops on long bus trips brings us to the most important thing to keep in mind when traveling by bus: think ahead a nd make preparations. Bring plenty of food and water on the bus with you, and restock your supplies each time the bus stops, even if you don't think you need to.

Watching where you sit is also necessary. If you're traveling alone, you may find yourself in a situation where you're elbow to elbow with a total stranger. Sometimes, it's possible to take measures to ensure you end up next to someone you can tolerate. If you're lucky enough to join the bus at a relatively uncrowded point on its route, you may be able to sit in an empty row. If you see that the bus is getting more populated, consider switching seats to sit next to someone who seems friendly. Many people bring pillows and blankets along on bus journeys, and this is really a good idea. Inflatable(膨胀的) pillows are a great item, because they take up hardly any room in a carry-on

bag when deflated, but can make your bus ride much more luxurious once you blow them up. Consider packing a few travel towels to use as blankets, which are small and portable and work well as blankets when you aren't using them to dry off.

16.It is known from the first paragraph that ________.

A.it is the cheapest for people to travel by bus

B.an increasing number of people hate taking buses

C.all people don't like to take buses

D.taking buses is the least comfortable

17.The purpose of the second paragraph is to ________.A.advise people not to take buses

B.list some problems with taking buses

C.show the advantages of airplanes over buses

D.explain the reason why people should take buses 18.According to the passage, when traveling by bus, you should ________.

A.just carry some of your favorite food and enough water B.buy something necessary whenever the bus stops

C.try to sit next to a tolerable person near the window D.always sit in an empty row with someone friendly 19.Which of the following questions is the passage aimed at answering?

A.What should you watch out for while traveling by bus? B.Why should you choose to travel by bus?

C.What are the disadvantages of taking buses?

D.What can be done to make bus travel more comfortable?

You are busy filling out the application form for a position you really need; let's assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed you r degree. Isn't it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma(毕业文凭) represents a Harvard degree or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University?

More and more people are turning to an utter deception(欺骗) like this to land their first jobs or to move ahead in their careers. For personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university.Registrars(注册主任) at most well-known colleges say that they deal with dishonest claims like these at the rate of about one per week.

Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms. If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are unwilling to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school refers to them as “special cases”. One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says these claims are made by “no such people”.

To avoid complete lies, some job seekers claim that they “attended” or “were associated with” a college or university. After careful checking, a personnel officer may discover that “attending” means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that “being associated with”a college means that the job seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century—that's when they began keeping records, anyhow.

If you don't want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a fake diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West C oast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of non-existent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from “Smoot State University”.The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the “University of Purdue”.As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper. 20.The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.A.college degrees can now be purchased easily B.nowadays it is very hard for people to find jobs

C.lying about college degrees is becoming a widespread problem

D.employers are no long er interested in applicants' actual performances

A.keep the records of them

B.drive them out of college

C.avoid direct conflicts with them

D.accuse them of such behavior

A.US employers value their job applicants with a degree from top universities

B.University of Purdue and Purdue University are the same school

D.people pay the same price for a fake diploma from different universities

Technology is changing our lives. Our present aerospace companies are gradually disappearing as private space concerns are being born every day. I'm going to discuss three space-based businesses that are sure to soon influence us all.

First we have to make space travel cheaply and safely. Engine design is the main challenge. To make money in space, the cost of space travel will have to diminish. This problem will be the most difficult to solve. Liquid fueled rockets are the only way to get out of Earth's orbit. Finding new ways to power the flight to space is also another big challenge.

Finding the key to cheap space t ravel might be the biggest story of our times. There are a lot of great minds working on this problem. And companies are pouring money into research and development. In the next few years we'll see the first sub-orbital tourist. And not long after that we should really start to see new and exciting things as competition heats up.

Spacecraft design and production will naturally follow rocket technology. All sorts of crafts will be needed for the wide uses they'll be tasked with. Several companies in the United States have already made small, low-cost test vehicles.

Resources in space will provide great mining profits to those who can afford the cost of setting up such a huge operation. Can you imagine finding a huge asteroid(小行星) of pure gold? The benefit to mankind is limitless. Mining on other planets, like Mars, also adds CO2 into the very thin atmosphere. Over time this can lead to the formation of an atmosphere similar to Earth's.

Space is going to offer us untold opportunity and wealth. But this is only going to occur if wealthy investors step forward and fund the first steps forward. It is certain that technology will take us to worlds we could never have imagined.

A class with hundreds of thousands of students might sound like a teacher's bad dream. But a big idea in higher education these days is the massive open online course, or MOOC.

Some universities offer free, non-credit MOOCs available to anyone in the world. Others charge for courses and provide credits. The idea is still developing.

So far, most massive open online courses are in computer science, technology, mechanics and engineering. For example, students around the world are taking a free course called “Building a Computer Search Engine”. Two computer scientists, Sebastian Thrun and David Evans, are offering this course through https://www.360docs.net/doc/0416362252.html,. Mr. Evans is an associate professor from Virginia University and Mr. Thrun is a Stanford research professor.

There are no education requirements for the course. The students watch short videos. And then they take informal quizzes after the videos each week for six weeks.

David Evans said, “Quizzes are part of the lecture to keep students busy and thinking, for students to be able to check that they understood what we covered. Those aren't graded and students try those as often as they want.”

They can repeatedly watch the videos and take the quizzes whenever they want.

Students receive homework. They join online groups to exchange questions and answers about the course.

The teachers hold virtual office hours to answer questions that the students have voted to send them. They also present their own questions and observations.

The students take a final examination to show where they rate in the class. Everyone who finishes the course receives a grade

and proof of completion.

Mr. Thrun started Udacity, which supports free MOOCs. Udacity hopes to make a profit in the future by connecting possible employers with interested students. On his Stanford homepage he says he wants to “democratize” education. Education, he says, should be free, accessible for all, everywhere and any time.

16.What do we know about MOOCs from the passage?

C.They are popular among high school students.

D.All of them are in computer science and technology. 17.“Building a Computer Search Engine” ________.

Millions of women use cosmetics, often called “make-up”. The cosmetics industry is one of the biggest in the world. Most large stores sell cosmetics, and there are always shops at airports selling them cheaply.

The word “cosmetics” refers to anything that people put on their faces to make them look better. Lipstick, face powder and cream, and eye make-up are the most popular.

Although more women than men use cosmetics, there are cosmetics for men as well as women.

Some people even have cosmetic surgery to make their faces look different. They have the shapes of their noses and eyes changed.

The most widely used cosmetic is probably lipstick, as many women who do not wear any other make-up will often put on a little lipstick.

Lipstick is made by mixing together different oils and colors. The mixture is then allowed to get hard and is cut into the shape of a small pencil. When a woman presses the lipstick to her lips, the end of it becomes soft, and some of it sticks to her lips, giving them extra color.

Cosmetics were probably first used in India, but it was the Egyptians, six thousand years ago, who made the most use of them. Rich Egyptian women painted their eyes green and black. They used a red color to paint pretty designs on their fingernails, the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet. Pictures of Cleopatra always show her wearing a lot of make-up.

The Romans also used cosmetics. They liked to make their skin very white and to paint their eyes. They also used a kind of lipstick.

In England at one time, very rich women had baths in milk to make their skin beautiful. They also used a lot of sweet-smelling powder to stop people smelling their bodies, which were often very dirty because they did not wash very often or change their

Do you still remember that the product you bought when you actually did isn't what you had planned to buy before? Some sort of propaganda(宣传) influenced you to make that decision. That thing has a name and it's called persuasion, a process which aims to change one's attitude, behavior, beliefs, intention and principles. Persuasion is a very powerful weapon that can be used wisely in all types of businesses, presentations and public speeches. So it's essential to master the art of persuasion.

There are many benefits of mastering the art of persuasion. Firstly, it can help you convince and motivate people of your class. By mastering the art of persuasion, you can change a person's perception(观念) and attitudes towards something. We often convince our parents to spend some money and buy us cars, gadgets, cinema tickets and fancy clothes. You steer(驾驭) all these actions by using effectively the art of persuasion. Most of us don't even realize that our lives are getting influenced by persuasion.

Secondly, it can help you succeed in a job interview. When you apply for a job, you know there are thousands of applicants for the same job you're eager to get. The only way to come out on top and stand out from thousands of interviewees for that particular job is by applying persuasion to nail that job. You sell yourself to him, convince your interviewer that he won't find somebody like you elsewhere and he'll look to you in a brighter way than the others.

Thirdly, it can help you succeed in your business. The business world today is getting larger and more competitive and it doesn't fit everyone. Only the ones who can master the art of persuasion are able to succeed. Persuasion in business can be applied through several ways, such as propaganda, advertising, and brainwashing. Therefore, you should realize that persuasion is quite helpful in selling more products or services and can help

you succeed in all types of businesses.

Lastly, it can help you avoid being persuaded by other people. Can you recall the product that you bought in a shop that seemed to be very useful and cost-effective at first glance and made you change your view upon it, but after a while you realized that you wasted your money for something worthless? I know you remember it. And that was a successful attempt of persuasion. You could have prevented that purchase if you mastered the art of persuasion by unmasking(揭露) the truth and making the right decision with a reasonable response. 16.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The art of persuasion.

B.The importance of persuasive skills.

C.The definition of persuasion.

D.The application of persuasive skills.

17.According to the second paragraph, the art of persuasion can ________.

A.make you able to change others' lives

B.make you keep motivated

C.make you seem more trustable

D.prevent your life being influenced

18.It is inferred from the passage that ________.

A.a successful businessman must be good at persuading people B.a person being bad at persuading people can't find a good job C.one can't succeed without mastering the art of persuasion D.somebody loses much money due to lack of persuasive skills 19.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

My dad was never the kind to offer

many words of love or encouragement. But

we knew he loved us…He just had his own

way of showing it.

When I was a teen, we were seasonal

campers at a family campground almost an

hour outside the city where we lived. Each family had their own campsite with water and electric, and you basically parked your camper there from May through October. Most “seasonals” visited them every weekend during those months, with the occasional week-long stay. There were plenty of other kids who camped seasonally each weekend, and they came to be some of my closest friends. Of course, many of them were boys.

We kids paired up with our little boyfriends or girlfriends, and we'd hold hands as we walked around the campground. We'd play ping-pong, have some snacks, and sing songs. Most weekends were pretty similar, but the couples would change. You'd see so-and-so with a different so-and-so than they were with the weekend before. You know how it is when you're a teen—a three-week relationship is a really long time.

So, needless to say, my teen years were spent with quite a few different boys. But every single one of them had something in common…They'd all received the Evil Eye.

The Evil Eye was a magical sort of thing. One simple look from my dad, and the boy immediately knew not to mess_with me. It was as if he could send his warnings through invisible laser(激光) beams that shot directly from his eyes to the boys' brains.

“You will not put your hands on my daughter…You will not kiss my daughter…You will not even whisper sweet things into my daughter's e ar.”

I remember one night in particular walking with a boy around the campground after dark. We came from one direction, and my dad from the other. The boy and my dad locked eyes for a brief second, then the boy dropped my hand like a hot potato and turne d away, giving me a quick “See you later.”

Yes, that's the Evil Eye: best way ever to keep wandering teen boys' hands away from your daughter.

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, “Do you think they'll let me play?”Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son, mentally and physically disabled, were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence.

Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around and said,“We're losing by six runs(分)and the game is in the eighth inning(局). I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the final inning.”

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and put on a team shirt with a broad smile and h is father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the final inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously joyful just to be in the game and on the field. In the bottom of the final inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. Would they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was almost impossible. The first pitch(投)came and Shay missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to throw the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The pitcher could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman and Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, beyond the reach of all teammates. The audience and the players from both teams started screaming,“Shay, run to first!”Never in his life had Shay ever run that far bu t made it to first base, wide-eyed and shocked.

Everyone shouted, “Run to second!”Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time, could have thrown the ball to the second baseman, but he understood the pitcher's intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third baseman's head.

All were screaming,“Shay, Shay, Shay, all the way Shay.” Shay reached third base when one opposing player ran to help him and shouted,“Shay, run to third.”As Shay rounded third, all were on their feet, crying,“Shay, run home!” Shay ran to home, stepped on the home base and was cheered as the hero who won the game for his team.

That day, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world. Shay didn't make it to another summer and died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy and coming home and seeing his mother tearfully hug her little hero of the day! 36.Not expecting much, Shay's father still asked the boy if Shay could play, mainly because the father________.

On Monday, June 25, 2012, hundreds of people gathered outside the Library of Congress, in Washington D.C., to celebrate public libraries. For more than 100 years, libraries have played an important role in keeping Americans informed and educated. But how are these book-filled buildings changing with the times? You may be surprised to find out.

Benjamin Franklin famously set up America's first lending library in 1731 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But the public library system got its biggest boost(推动) in the late 1800s. Businessman Andrew Carnegie donated millions of dollars to help build free public libraries across the country. Between1886 and 1919, Carnegie's donations helped build 1,679 new libraries! Carnegie believed in the opportunities that libraries could offer Americans, young and old. He knew that the more libraries there were; the more people would have access to books, lectures, news and more. “There are now more public libraries in the United States than McDonalds restaurants,” said Clara Hayden of Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library.

Chances are, there is a public library in or near your community. After all, the United States is home to 9,225 public libraries. Today, libraries continue to innovate(创新) and grow. Seven out of ten libraries offer free Internet access. This opens many doors for community members who can not go online at home, including the opportunity to apply for jobs online.

Libraries are also teaching kids about the fun of reading. One new program called Read!Build!Play! combines reading wit h playtime. As kids listen to a book being read aloud, they use Legos(乐高玩具) to build images from the story. “Today's libraries are always looking for creative programming to bring people into the library,” said Lego's Michael McNally. Benjamin Franklin once said, “The doors of wisdom are never shut.” As long as the doors of public libraries are open, his statement is most certainly true!

Once upon a time, there lived a man who wanted to achieve everything he was capable of achieving. He was obsessed with this desire—he ate, slept, and walked with one and only dream: to die, having accomplished every single thing he was able to accomplish.

Late Sunday night, on August 5, 2012, cheers rang throughout NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) (美国宇航局喷射推进实验室), in Pasadena, CA. The team launched a high-tech robot, called Curiosity, into space, last year. On Sunday, after more tha n eight months of travel, Curiosity reached its destination: Mars. The mobile robot, or rover, landed in a crater(坑) near Mars's equator. Minutes later, it sent back to Earth a black-and-white picture of its own wheel on Mars soil. “We have landed in a n ice flat spot,” said engineer Adam Steltzner, who led the landing team. “Beautiful, really beautiful!”

Curiosity had a particularly risky landing. Weighing about a ton, the car-sized rover is the heaviest Mars explorer yet. The previous three Mars rovers relied on giant airbags for a soft, safe landing. But Curiosity's weight made landing more complicated.NASA scientists planned a number of steps to slow down the spacecraft carrying Curiosity so it would not go crashing into Mars. As the craft neared the Red Planet, a giant parachute popped out(弹出), helping to slow down the landing. Later, powerful engines fired from the craft to slow it down some more.

Much to the relief of NASA scientists, Curiosity drove itself to a safe and gentle landing. “That rocked!” said Richard Cook, the mission's deputy project manager, shortly after the landing. “Seriously, wasn't that cool?”

This is NASA's seventh successful landing on Mars. Over its 98-week mission, Curiosity will search for the essential ingredients of life, including oxygen, and might find an answer to the question of whether or not Mars once sustained life. Scientists decided against a safer landing on a plain and instead chose to land in a crater, where water tends to gather. The crater is next to the Martian mountain Sharp, which is three times the size of Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth. “We're hoping to find materials that interacted with water,” said John Grotizenger, the mission project's scientist.

NASA scientists hope that Curiosity will make some big discoveries over the course of the mission. But for the moment, they are excited that their latest rover made it to Mars safely. JPL Director Charles Elachi compared his team of scientists to a team of Olympic athletes. “This team came back with gold,” he said. 36.The robot Curiosity was sent into space ________.

A.in July, 2011

B.in September, 2011

C.in November, 2011

D.in August, 2012
