Does discussion among people who have contrasting points of view best lead to progress, as the speaker maintains? I concede that opponent views have the utility of telling us when and where to review our own opinions and then preventing us from certain mistakes caused by presumption. What's more, history tells us that discussion between people who have contrasting points of view provides energy and useful materials for people's progress. However, agreements are also indispensable for people's progress, which provide worthy confidences and motivations.

One of my main points of agreements with the speaker comes to the fact that contrasting points of view can tell us when and where to review our own opinions. Understandably, when things are going smoothly, we generally do not think them. For example, we probably are not thinking our kneecaps right now, since every thing is fine with them. The same goes to our thoughts: we generally take our own points of view for granted—there is no problem at all. However, if disagreements are come up among discussion with people who maintain opponent ideas, we immediately notice that certain problems probably hid in our points, which we should think twice and then find out in order to deal with, as an aftermath, we can make progress by improving our views and correcting some mistakes. Thus, discussion among people who have contrasting points of view prevents us from certain mistakes caused by presumption.

My another point of agreement with the speaker is that contrasting points of view serve an essential purpose: they provide energy and useful materials for people's progress. A telling illustration is the perpetual debate between Materialism and Idealism. They explain the world and university with different angles and means. However, their hundreds-year-long debate result in both one's philosophical progresses and improvements instead of either one's fiasco, since philosophers maintaining either view can observe the world and university deeper and deeper with reciprocal achievements.

Notwithstanding the foregoing merits of the statement, it still poses certain problem that it fail to stress the important effect made by people whose view we share. Our collective life experience is that we can acquire great encouragements and confidences from agreements and the applauses accompanying them. All kinds of prizes serve a reasonable example, such as Nobel Prize, Oscar Prize and various prizes in respective areas. The prizewinners must have obtained extensive agreements and admirations in the certain field. In other words, majority of experts in the field share the points of view with the prizewinner. Moreover, such prizes give worthy confidences and motivations to the prizewinners; consequently, they tend to research more and achieve more. Thus, people can also benefit from people whose view we share.

In sum, discussion among people who have contrasting points of view makes progress insofar as it

improve our views and corrects some mistakes. However, if we utilize agreements which provide worthy confidences and motivations as well, we can make better progress.
