I cry easily. I cried when a boy in the film suffered from an incurable disease. I cried when an athlete broke a world record.

One night my wife and I were going to dinner at a friend’s. As we went towards the house, I noticed a car pulling out from the sidewalk. Just ahead, another car was waiting to back into the parking space. But before he could do so a yellow car came up from behind and sneaked into the space.

While my wife went ahead into our friend’s house, I stepped into the street.

“Hey,” I said, “this parking space belongs to that guy.” I gestured towards the man ahead, who was looking back angrily. At that moment I was feeling pretty manly.

“Mind your own business!” the driver told me.

“No,” I said. “You don’t understand. That fellow was waiting to back into this space.”

Things quickly heated up, until finally he jumped out of the car. My God, he was extremely large. He grabbed me and shook his rock of a fist at me. I tasted blood. I was terrified.

Almost in a panic, I ran to my friend’s front door. As a former Marine(海军), as a man, I felt absolutely embarrassed as my wife and friends asked me what had happened. All I could say was that I had had an argument about a parking space. They were sensitive and let it go at that.

Perhaps half an hour later, the doorbell rang. For some reason I was sure that the huge man had returned for me. My blood ran cold. My hostess got up to answer it, but I stopped her. I knew I had to face up to my fear.

I opened the door. There he stood. “I came back to apologize,” he said in a low voice. “I am ashamed of myself. The Brooklyn Navy Yard where I’ve worked for ten years is closing. Today I got laid off. I’m not myself. I hope you’ll accept my apology. ”

I remembered that after I closed the door, I stood there for a few minutes alone with tears in my eyes.

The Garden Burgers located in Truman was recognized by the Garden Burgers head office in Kansas City, Missouri. The Truman location of Garden Burgers recorded the highest sales last year. It brought in over $1,500,000 for the entire year. But what is more important is that Truman only has a population of 40,000. The store directly behind the Truman store in terms of sales is located in a city of over 300,000.

Fred Laster and Jasper Watts bought into the Garden Burgers franchise(特许)only 3 years and a few months ago. They have used the combination of a good restaurant location and a series of promotional events to make Garden Burgers one of the most visited restaurants in Truman.

However, they are quick to add that these are not the main reasons the store has done so well. “We found a franchise with a solid image and great franchise-wide marketing,” Watts said in a phone interview.

Laster and Watts expect this year to be just as productive as last year. After 4 months, they are on pace to exceed last year’s sales by more than $70,000. Each year the head office awards the owners of the store achieving the highest sales for the year with a weekend stay at the best hotel in Kansas City and tickets to a Kansas City Chiefs football game. However, due to the extremely good sales performance of the store in Truman, the head office decided to change the tradition. Laster and Watts said their staff, which consists of only 5 university students, would be joining them in Kansa city as well.

Tom Justins, the president of Garden Burgers has also sent his congratulations and he hopes that all their stores can look at the example the store has set.

D. The store has recorded the highest sales with a smaller population.

C.Local Burger Shop Has Record Year.

D.The Unbelievable Record of Hamburgers.

C

In the early days of the internet, the idea that it represented an entirely new and separate

field distinct from the real world was seized upon by both supporters and critics of the new technology. Supporters liked the idea that the virtual(虚拟的)world was a placeless datasphere, liberated from constrains and restrictions of the real world, and an opportunity for a fresh start. For instance, John Perry Barlow, an internet activist, issued the “Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace” in February 1996. He thundered, “Governments of the industrial world, I come from cyberspace, the new home of mind. Cyberspace does not lie within your borders. We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth.”

Where Mr. Barlow found the separation between the real and virtual worlds exciting, however, critics regarded it as a cause for concern. They worried that people were spending too much time online, communicating with people they had never even met in person in chat rooms, virtual game worlds and, more recently, on social-networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. A study carried out by the Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society in 2000, for example, found that heavy internet users spent less time talking to friends and family, and warned that the

I nternet could be “the ultimate isolating(隔离)technology”.

Both groups were wrong, of course. The Internet has not turned out to be a thing apart.

Unpleasant aspects of the real world, such as taxes, crime and cheating are now characteristics of the virtual world, too. Gamers who make real money selling swords, gold and other things in virtual game worlds may now find that the tax man wants to know about it. Designers of virtual objects in Second Life, an online virtual world, are seeking to real-world lawsuits(诉讼)in order to protect their intellectual property.

At the same time, however, some of the most exciting uses of the Internet rely on combining it with the real world. Social networking allows people to stay in touch with their friends online, and plan social activities in the real world. The distinction between online and offline chatters does not matter any more.

All these approaches treat the Internet as an extension or an attachment to the physical world, not a separate space. Rather than seeing the real and virtual fields as distinct and conflicting, in short, it makes sense to see them as complementary and connected.

63. According to the passage, internet supporters believed that__________.

A. cyberspace liberated the real world

B. the Internet stood for progress of technology

C. cyberspace can be entered by anyone for free

D. the virtual world was a place without boundaries

64. Why is John Perry Barlow mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A. To support the equality for all.

B. To prove the influence of the Internet.

C. To show the supporters’ fav or of cyberspace.

D. To attack governments of industrial countries.

65. The passage suggests that critics of the new technology ___________.

A. worried that friends would never meet in person

B. believed that the Internet could isolate people online

C. worried that people would be separated from the real world

D. were concerned that people were addicted to social networks

66. From the passage we can conclude that the author ____________.

A. argues that real and virtual worlds are not consistent

B. believes the real and virtual worlds rely on each other

C. agrees with both supporters and critics of the Internet

D. opposes the combination of the Internet and the physical world

D

Honesty may well be the best policy, but it often deserts us when no one is watching, psychologists report today. Experiments with an honesty box to collect payments for hot drinks show that people are better at paying up under the gaze of a pair of eyes. The surprise was that the eyes were not real, but photographed.

Researchers at Newcastle University set up the experiment in secret. They attached a poster to a cupboard of mugs above an honesty box alongside a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk. Over ten weeks, they alternated(轮换))each week between images of eyes and pictures of flowers.

Dr. Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study, said that even though the eyes were not real, they still seemed to make people behave more honestly. The effect may arise from behavioral characteristics that developed as early humans formed social groups that increased their chances of survival. Individuals had to co-operate for the good of the group, rather than act selfishly.

“If nobody is watching us, it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we think we’re being watched we should behave better, so people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us,” Dr. Bateson said.

“We thought we’d get a slight effect with eyes, but it was quite striking how much difference they made. Even at a subconscious level, it seems people respond to eyes, and that might be because eyes send a strong biological signal we have evolved(进化)to respond to. ”

The finding, which researchers believe sheds light on our evolutionary past, could be turned to practical use. The psychologists say images of eyes could promote ticket sales on public transport and improve monitor systems to prevent antisocial behavior.

67. The passage is mainly about ______.

A. the effect of honesty

B. the evolution on honesty

C. the policy of honesty

D. the importance of honesty

68. We learn from the experiments that ______.

A. everyone is born to be honest

B. people behave honestly to survive

C. people become more honest with evolution

D. eyes have a bigger effect on honesty than expected

69. Why do people behave more honestly under the stare of eyes?

A. They fear to be laughed at by others.

B. They want to leave a good impression.

C. They have got the nature through evolution.

D. They take the eyes in the photo for the real ones

70. Images of eyes can be applied to all except _______.

As I walked across the campus of Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University, I came upon a table filled with young people chatting and enjoying the fine weather. _____71_____ Trilogy, an Austin, Texas-based software company, had a reputation for recruiting(招聘)our top students. I walked over to the table. “Are you guys here to recruit?” I asked. “No,”they replied firmly. “We're not recruiters. We're just hanging out with friends.”How interesting, I thought. They've come to campus on a workday, all the way from Austin, just to hang out with friends.

I noticed one member of the group sitting on the grass, having multicolored hair, full-body tattoos(纹身), and multiple holes in his ears. _____72_____ But as I would later learn, he was a gifted student who had inked the highest-paying deal in the history of their departments. What a change from my own college days, when students would put on their dressy clothes and carefully hide any counterculture tendencies to prove that they could fit in with the company. _____73_____ In fact, the guy I met on the campus just signed on with Trilogy, right at that table on the grass, with the recruiters who do not “recruit.”

_____74_____ I once asked one young man why he was going to a smaller city in Texas. The company is excellent, he told me. There are also terrific people and the work is challenging. Though he had several good job offers from Pittsburgh's high-tech firms and knew the city well, he said he

felt the city lacked the lifestyle options, cultural diversity, and tolerant attitude that would make it attractive to him.

_____75_____ He is a member of what I call the creative class: a fast-growing, highly educated, and well-paid part of the workforce. They do not consciously think of themselves as a class. Yet they share a common attitude that values creativity, individuality, difference, and advantage.

In the picture, I can see two men are trying to make a bench. Both of them are working hard, sweating a lot. But obviously they are nailing the legs on different sides.

Seeing the picture, I can’t help thinking how ridiculous it is. They work as a team and both of them do make their efforts. Good morning. We would like to welcome you to the largest natural history museum in North America. As you enter the museum, please follow the tour guidelines very closely.

When you enter the first exhibition hall, please make your way to the large screen on the right side of the room. There you will watch a brief overview of the museum’s history. The video lasts about 10 minutes.

After your group has finished the video, you can enter the main exhibition halls. While touring the museum, please stay to the left. There are arrows along the way pointing you in the right

direction. The arrows help prevent groups from blocking hallways and exhibit halls. The exhibits are arranged in chronological order. Be sure to follow the arrows or you will be thoroughly confused as far as the timeline is concerned.

Some objects are enclosed in a glass container, so please adjust your flash when taking pictures. Pictures are allowed in the museum. But if you are seen touching an exhibit or there is any horseplay near an exhibit, you will be asked to leave immediately.

Your tour through the museum should take just about an hour and fifteen minutes. After you complete your tour, please stop off at our museum gift shop and purchase some souvenirs to take home as memories of your visit to our museum.

Thank you and have a wonderfully educational tour.
