Q:Who is the prettiest girl in the eyes of the man?

A 20-year-old Australian model and dancer won the Miss Universe title in a two-hour beauty contest watched by television viewers around the world.

Jennifer Hawkins, a 5-foot-11 blonde with blue eyes, was chosen from 80 beauty queens. Miss U.S.A., Shandi Finnessey, was awarded second place.

Hawkins received the crown from outgoing Miss Universe, Amelia Vega, and then walked the length of the stage to the cheers of the crowd. Several times she reached up to touch her crown, as if to remind herself she had actually won the title.

Besides modeling and dancing, Hawkins also organizes a dance team that tours Australia. Her interests include surfing, camping and watching ballet.

Before the contest began, Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan, who performed at the Miss Universe finals, defended beauty contests from critics who insist such events treat women merely as playthings. She said, "A beautiful woman has very great powers to convince, and we have seen many misses who have done a great job."

Despite Estevan's support, many people question the value of beauty

contests. Women's liberation organizations in the United States regularly demonstrate in protest outside Miss America and Miss World contests. Conservative religious groups in India forced such contests to move from Calcutta when they threatened bombings.

All the same, some Australians were hoping the two-hour show would draw world attention to the beauty of their country and attract tourists. They hope Australia is going to shine for what it is, an unforgettable place.

A 22-year-old girl, Pamela Jones, is to undergo six months of plastic surgery on her entire body in a bid to transform herself from an "ugly duckling" into a beauty.

She went under the knife for the first time on Monday and hopes her new looks will lead to a career in films after the long surgery.

A crack team of plastic surgeons has been brought together for the operation, which is being financed by an unnamed sponsor. The surgery began on Monday with the creation of a double eyelid for Pamela and making her nose tip more pointed. Then they will remove the wrinkles from her neck and make her face thinner. Other operations will adjust her jawbone and work on her breasts, abdomen, bottom and legs.

Pamela said beauty was not the most important thing and that a noble character should be prized more highly in a person. But she added, "Nowadays it is technically possible for me to become more physically beautiful. If I can become beautiful both inside and outside, why not?"

But Pamela, a fashion writer and jewelry dealer, is not without worry about loss of her original appearance. She has not dared to tell her parents of her plans for cosmetic surgery although her boyfriend is fully behind her decision to go under the knife.

Dr. Bruce Carson, who will lead the operating team, said they have a picture of the future beauty they hope to turn Pamela into. He also said her new

appearance would last for between three and five years.
