A year ago, August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but it was hard for Dave to find work, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining

the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift—$7,000, a legacy(遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were meeting difficulty .”says Dave.

But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by what the Hatches had done. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100,000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.

Children of the Great Depression(经济大萧条), Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They preferred comparison shopping and would go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.

Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camps when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything,” says their friend Sandy V an Weelden, “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”

Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches gave away their farmland. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy—a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents—should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.

Neighbors helping neighbors—that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.

5. According to the text, the Fusses __________.

A. were employed by a truck company

B. led a difficult life

D. lost their home

B. They left the old house to live on their family farm.

C. They gave away their possessions(财产)to their neighbors.

D. They helped their neighbors to find jobs.

7. Why would the Hatches go from store to store?

A. They decided to open a store.

B. They wanted to save money.

C. They couldn’t afford expensive things.

D. They wanted to buy gifts for local kids.

8. What Sandy V an Weelden said mainly tells us that the Hatches were __________.

A. understanding

B. kind

C. childlike

D. wealthy

C

In the fall of 1985. I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Tw enty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college an the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer.

I made the choice to leave college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was

fantastic---and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.

Y ou can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling sorry about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to give up, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!

I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a

big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when yo u’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember;

little steps add up to big dreams.

9. When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ________.

A. a writer

B. a teacher

A. She was busy yet happy with her family life.

B. She ignored her sorry feeling for her sons.

C. She wanted to remain a full-time housewife.

D. She was too confused to make a correct choice.

12. What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Failure is the mother of success.

B. Little by little ,one goes far.

C. Every coin has two sides.

D. Well begun, half done.

13. Which of the following can best describe the author?

A. Caring and determined.

Pete Richards was the loneliest man in town on the day that little Jean Grace opened the door of his shop.

Pete's grandfather had owned the shop until his death. Then the shop became Pete's. The front window was full of beautiful old things: jewelry of a hundred years ago, gold and silver boxes, carved figures from China and Japan and other nations.

On this winter afternoon, a child stood there, her face close to the window. With large and serious eyes, she studied each piece in the window. Then, looking pleased, she stepped back from the window and went into the shop.Pete himself stood behind the counter. His eyes were cold as

he looked at the small girl."Please," she began, "would you let me look at the pretty string of blue beads(珠子)in the window?"Pete took the string of blue beads from the window. The beads were beautiful against his hand as he held the necklace up for her to see.

"They are just right," said the child as though she were alone with the beads. "Will you wrap them up in pretty paper for me, please? I've been looking for a really wonderful Christmas present for my sister."

"How much money do you have?" asked Pete.

From the pocket of her coat, she took a handful of pennies and put them on the counter. "This is all I have," she explained simply. "I've been saving the money for my sister's present."

Pete looked at her, his eyes thoughtful. Then he carefully closed his hand over the price mark on the necklace so that she could not see it. How could he tell her the price? The happy look in her big blue eyes struck him like the pain of an old wound.

"Just a minute," he said and went to the back of the shop. "What's your name?" he called out. He was very busy about something.

"Jean Grace," answered the child.

When Pete returned to the front of the shop, he held a package in his hand. It was wrapped in pretty Christmas paper and tied with a green ribbon.

"There you are," he said. "Don't lose it on the way home."

She smiled happily at him as she ran out the door. Through the window he watched her go. He felt more alone than ever.

Something about Jean Grace and her string of beads had made him feel once more the pain of his old grief(悲痛). The child's hair was as yellow as the sunlight; her eyes were as blue as the sea. Once upon a time, Pete had loved a girl with hair of that same yellow and with eyes just as blue. And the necklace of blue stones had been meant for her.

But one rainy night, a car had gone off the road and struck the girl whom Pete loved. After she died, Pete felt that he had nothing left in the world except his grief. The blue eyes of Jean Grace brought him out of that world of self-pity and made him remember again all that he had lost. The pain of remembering was so great that Pete wanted to run away from the happy Christmas shoppers who came to look at his beautiful old things during the next ten days.

When the last shopper had gone, late on Christmas Eve, the door opened and a young woman came in. Pete could not understand it, but he felt that he had seen her before. Her hair was sunlight yellow and her eyes were sea-blue. Without speaking, she put on the counter a package wrapped in pretty Christmas paper. From her pocket she took out a green ribbon and put it with the package. When Pete opened the package, the string of blue beads lay again before him.

"Did this come from your shop?" she asked.

Pete looked at her with eyes no longer cold. "Y es, it did," he said.

"Are the stones real?"

"Y es. They aren't the best turquoise but they are real."

"Can you remember to whom you sold them?"

"She was a small girl. Her name was Jean. She wanted them for her sister's Christmas present."

"How much were they?"

"I can't tell you that," he said. "The seller never tells anyone else what a buyer pays."

"But Jean has never had more than a few pennies. How could she pay for them?"

"She paid the biggest price one can ever pay," he said. "She gave all she had."

For a moment there was no sound in the little shop. Then somewhere in the city, church bells began to ring. It was midnight and the beginning of another Christmas Day.

"But why did you do it?" the girl asked.

Pete put the package into her hands.

"There is no one else to whom I can give a Christmas present," he said. "It is already Christmas morning. Will you let me take you to your home? I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas at your door."

And so, to the sound of many bells, Pete Richards and a girl whose name he had not yet learned walked out into the hope and happiness of a new Christmas Day.

21. “I am very happy to get the gift and I should thank my little brother who loves me so much.”

22. “I am so proud of my son to buy me the valuable gift when he is so young.”

23. “I am very happy to have the honor. I think I should thank my children, my relatives, my friends, my neighbors and so on.”

24. “I’m very happy that my daughter-in-law gives me so high a prize. But I think it is my duty to take care of my sons and my grandchildren.”

25. “I never imagined that my favorite star would give me such a high and special honor. I believe that I will still be his fan for ever.”

A

We have been blessed with an angel in our family. I don’t even know if she knows the number of lives she has touched. She just goes on with her everyday tasks and never even realizes the wonderful love that flows from her every move. She is known by so many different titles, like, mom, aunt, sister, friend, neighbor, etc.

B

Whether I am having a good day or in more cases a really bad day, she never seems to fail me, no matter what the circumstances are. Moreover, she’s by far one of my biggest fans. Mom is a really good-hearted person with a beautiful spirit that always shines through even during my darkest days. She definitely earns her angel wings.

C

My special angel is my mother. She is there whenever I need her. In my opinion, she deserves the gift. This gift would surely brighten up her day. She is the one who I can count on to help me or have a hot meal ready for dinner. Moms do that but no one really appreciates them as much as they should be. I just want to make her feel special. There may be a lot of special angels out there, but I think my mom is the only special angel in my heart.

D

Hi, I’m 7 years old and my special angel is my mommy. She takes care of me and our house, works with troublesome teens as a volunteer, takes me to gymnastics every week, and works two jobs. My mommy is my best friend and we are angels for each other. She always thinks of others first. I think she should be the Angel Among Us winner. Please pick my mommy. It would be a great Christmas gift for her since I can’t buy her a present.

E

My special angel is my sister. She is tall and beautiful. And I am proud of her to be my sister. She loves me very much. She is always there for me. She takes care of me when mommy and daddy are not at home, and when I am ill or hurt. She often tells me stories and rides bicycles with me at the weekends. Whatever question I ask her, she will always tell me the answer. She is the best sister in the world. I love her very much.

F

I met my special angel 32 years ago starting my first job. She trained me as a friend. She introduced me to one of her sons t o whom I’ve been married for 20 years. She lovingly raised seven children, and after retiring helped to raise a grandchild who is now in college. Living next

door she was always there to help with our two sons, babysitting, fixing them snacks, or teaching them how to make peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4.
