College Stress

May 24, 2014

Jack’s heart pounds as he casts panicky looks around the classroom. He doesn’t know any of the students, and he can’t even figure out what the subject is. In front of him is a test. At the last minute his roommate awakens him. It’s only another anxiety dream. The very fact that dreams like Jack’s are common suggests that college is a stressful situation for young people. The cause of this stress can be academic, financial, and personal.

Academic stress is common in college students. There is always a lot of homework and the lessons they have are usually very hard. What’s more because many of them would like to go abroad to have further education, the score and the GPA they get are both important. Furthermore, some research institutions even ask them to be top in class. Just as Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences only accept the students who ranked top 10%.

In addition to academic stress, the student often feels financial pressure. Most of them are buried in the heavy study, and seldom have time to have a part time job, so the majority has to depend on their parents. However, the life in college is really costly, which not only the essential life needs, but also the money to attend competitions and exams, for example the IELTS, GRE etc.

Along with academic and financial worries, the student faces personal pressures. For example, many students find it’s difficult to get on well with friends and do not know how to deal the relationships with tutors.

In conclusion, academic stress, financial press and the personal are three big pressure which make college students can’t sleep well
