非常感谢你们热情友好的欢迎词。中国是最古老的文明发源地,访问这个文明古国是我多年梦寐以求的愿望.这次访问使我有机会重见老朋友,结交新朋友。我为自己能访问贵国和这座美丽的城市,再次表达我的愉快之情和荣幸之感.我对你们为我到达贵国后所做的安排深表谢意。

作为一名在一家中美合资企业工作了两年的美国经理，我以为中国人和美国人在经营管理中存在着差异。由于我们之间有着不同的文化传统，所以我们比大部分中国同行来得直率。我无法断言我们的经营方式一定在他们的之上。毕竟各有各的优点和弊病。近年来，越来越多的美国管理人员已认识到中国人那种更具人情味的管理方式的长处。

Working Together Towards the Sustainable Development of Confucius Institutes Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, and friends,

Good evening!

I take great pleasure to be here with you in this family reunion of the world Confucius Institutes to celebrate the opening of the 5th Confucius Institute conference in this dazzling evening. On behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, I would like to extend my warmest welcome and sincere greetings to all of you, friends from all over the world.

In this past year, with the unprecedented enthusiasm and unwavering support from the governments and people of all the relevant countries, and with the concerted, innovative, and pioneering efforts by both the Chinese and international colleagues, Confucius Institutes around the globe have made remarkable achievements. Such afore-mentioned achievements would have been impossible without the steady endeavor of all the representatives present, the concerted efforts of all the Chinese and host universities, and the support from the governments and the people in all the host countries. Here I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you, your colleagues and friends whose efforts are indispensable to the great accomplishments in the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes around the globe.

Ladies and gentlemen, and friends,

The Confucius Institute has gone through an extraordinary journey in the past five years, having attained remarkable achievements. Now we are at a brand new starting point. Looking into the future, we need to seize the opportunities, think carefully and make strategic planning for the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes.

Ladies and gentlemen, friends,

As an old Chinese saying goes: “Bosom friends know no distance, and neighbors remain r egardless of thousands of miles”. The exchange of languages and cultures lies in the hearts of human beings. Running Confucius Institutes well is a noble act that will not only benefit today's people, but also generations down the road. The cause of international Chinese language education is bigger than ourselves. I am convinced that, through our concerted efforts, Confucius Institutes will enjoy a brighter and more prosperous future!

The New Year is just around the corner. We are in for the 2011 in just about 20 days. I would like to take this opportunity to give my best wishes to every friend present here, and also through you to all the directors, teachers and students from the 322 Confucius Institutes in 96 countries and regions. I wish you all good health, the best of luck and a very Happy New Year! Thank you all!

世界文化旅游与当地社区大会是联合国世界旅游组织（UNWTO）本年度在亚洲举行的首批较为重要的活动之一，我很高兴地代表UNWTO对各位的到来表示热烈的欢迎。今天我们选择在爪哇的日惹市探讨文化旅游与当地社区的问题是非常合适的。爪哇和整个印度尼西亚一样，拥有世界上最为丰富和多样化的文化遗产。而且这里还有婆罗浮屠、普罗巴南等历史遗址，这些遗址可谓是人类最宝贵的珍宝、世界上最著名的旅游胜地。确实是这样的，近几年来我们选择在日惹举行关于文化旅游发展的国际会议并非偶然。

女士们，先生们，我想首先谈一下当今世界旅游业的现状。2005年是旅游业取得重大发展的一年。大家都还记得，这一年刚刚开始发生了灾难性的印度洋海啸，对整个亚洲的旅游业都冲击很大。但是，世界旅游业不仅表现出了强劲的恢复能力，而且全球游客总数还首次超过了8亿大关，总增长率高达5.5%。尤其是亚太地区，尽管2004年境外游客的增长率惊人，达到了28%，但是2005年仍然增长了7%。我们充分了解几个主要的不确定因素的存在，尤其是恐怖主义、油价高升、禽流感的潜在影响。但是整个2006年世界旅游业的发展态势表明这一行业的发展仍然相当乐观，有更大的发展潜力。

今天我们共聚一堂，讨论文化旅游及其与当地社区的关系这一重要议题。大会的目的在于探讨文化旅游给当地社区带来的挑战以及其对消除贫困的贡献。消除贫困是当前发展中国家面临的最主要的问题之一，这一问题不仅得到了各国领导人及其政府的高度重视，也同样是平民百姓关心的问题。作为联合国的一个专门机构，UNWTO一直致力于协助国际社会实现联合国千年发展目标，尤其是减少赤贫。确实如此，毫无疑问，文化旅游已经证明其有能力为当地社区创造就业岗位、增加社会和经济机会、提高生活质量，因而可以为消除贫困作出巨大贡献。日惹市的生动实例，尤其是其所提出的“文化长廊”这一概念，就证明了一个旅游城市可以利用其世界级的旅游景点来造福当地社区。

过去10年中世界旅游组织一直在世界各地积极倡导发展文化旅游。2004年，UNWTO 召开了一个文化旅游和消除贫困的部长会议，集中讨论了文化旅游带来的挑战和机遇，最终签署了《顺化宣言》。而且我们还设立了联合国世界旅游组织课持续旅游业发展与消除贫困基金会，在发展中国家开展了一些发展可持续旅游业来消除贫困的初期活动。

我很高兴地注意到本次大会吸引了来自各行各业的代表，发言者中既有部长和高级官员，又有知名的业界领导人和学者。他们的知识、见解和经验会为我们提供地区在实践发展可持续文化旅游的一些模式，这些模式可进一步丰富顺化宣言所完成的理论方面的工作，因此非常宝贵。另外，我相信本次大会将会提出一些切实可行的合作模式，使国有和私有部门联合起来，通过旅游业促进社区发展。

在结束讲话之际，我想感谢印度尼西亚文化及旅游部主办这次大会。你们自我们到达之后的热情招待和精心安排一定会使本次大会更为成功。

最后祝愿印度尼西亚和日惹市的旅游业发展兴旺，祝各位在本次大会期间多有收获。

It gives me much pleasure on behalf of our company to extend a warm welcome to the members of the American delegation from Star Corporation, who have been invited to this country by our company. I understand that arrangements are being made for a comprehensive visiting program and I need not talk about this now.

I have, however, just heard that an agreement has been reached between our two companies to establish a joint venture. This is a great step forward and I am sure that our chairman, who is now visiting Canada, would like me to express on behalf of the company to all businessmen present here how pleased we are at the news.

Apart from business contracts, your visit will surely help enhance the cooperation and friendship between us. “Well begun is half done”, as we said. I am sure that this visit will lead to many more in the future.

In closing, I would like to invite you to join me in a toast. To the cooperation and friendship between us! To the health of all the ladies and gentlemen present here!
