YOU probably know OneRepublic?s music even if you think you don?t. Their songs are all over public spaces and music players. And the US rock band was even shown to a tech audience when Apple introduced its new iPhone 6s earlier this month.

Differen t from many other rock bands that sing about anger and pain, OneRepublic?s songs have positive (积极的) messages and their lyrics are full of hope.

Take Apple CEO Tim Cook?s favorite song, I Lived by OneRepublic, for example. It is about living life to its fu llest and enjoying every minute. “I owned every second that this world could give,” one line goes.

Behind the songs? lyrics is the band?s lead singer Ryan Tedder, 36. Bands are a collection of musical talents, but a lead singer is usually the group?s leader. In OneRepublic, Billboard said that Tedder plays “commander-in-chief” (总司令) because of his excellent songwriting abilities. He has written hits for superstars including Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Adele.

Of course, Tedder has also created hits for his own band: Its first hit Apologize swept the world back in 2007, and its 2013 song Counting Stars topped the charts in many countries.

Although the band is now loved by worldwide fans, Tedder and his teammates didn?t achieve success overnight. Tedder and guitarist Zach Filkins met in high school. They formed a band, but they broke up after a poor

performance in a talent show. Later, in college, Tedder won an MTV songwriting contest, and the prize was a record deal. But he walked away from the chance to write bubblegum pop (泡泡糖流行乐) – he wanted to make deeper music. In 2003, the two reunited in Los Angeles and started OneRepublic with the rest of the current group. Songwriting alone got them a deal with Columbia Records for a little while. But they mostly played small club shows afterwards. While driving home from a show one night, Filkins told Tedder that he was quitting (离开) the band if nothing big happened for them in six months.

Luckily, half a year later, Apologize became a global hit.
