Compositions

1. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: My Opinion on Campus Love. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below:

1) Some people are strongly against campus love.

2) Some people accept it.

3) My view.

Campus love isn't a newly-born phenomenon. Some people are strongly against it while some others think it's natural. I don't advocate it. The reasons are as follows.

First of all, undergraduates are neither fully psychologically mature nor able to assume the responsibility, especially freshmen and sophomores. Second, they may indulge in it, thus dilapidate their study, which isn't rare. Third, some just take advantage of it to kill time, avoid boredom with much time at their own disposals, have someone keep company, etc. What's more, some change dating "partners" frequently, holding a paradox opinion that they could show off their charm or accumulate experience, but more often than not, they would leave a bad impression, such as lacking the sense of responsibility, on others, especially their former sweethearts. Last, the proportion of successful couples is too low. The overwhelming majority reach the same end - parting just before graduation, forced by reality, etc.

So, look before you leap, discard campus love and make a wiser decision after graduation.

2. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: How to Learn English Well? You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below:

1) 有人认为最重要的是学好语法

2) 有人认为最重要的是尽可能多地记单词和词组

3) 你认为…..

Some people think that if we want to learn English well we must first learn English grammar well. Others believe we can…t learn English well unless we keep in mind as many English words and phrases as possible.

In my opinion, grammar rules, new words and phrases are very important, but they are not enough. For example, some of my classmates are quite good at grammar and have learned by heart a lot of English words and phrases, yet they can…t express themselves in English when they meet foreign friends.

The best way to learn English well, I think, is to learn and use English all the time. Don…t be afraid of being laughed at. We?d better do a lot of listening, speaking, reading and writing. If you can develop the habit of thinking and writing in English all day, you are sure to grasp the spirit of English and will be able to read works in English within a short period of time.

Practice makes perfect. Only in this way can we learn English effectively.

3. About Friendship

Friendship is a kind of human relations. It is a human instinct to make friends. When in trouble, we need friends to offer us help, support and encouragement. With success achieved, we also need friends to share our joys.

Friendship is also one of the greatest pleasures that we can enjoy. It implies loyalty, cordiality, sympathy, affection, and readiness to help. No man can make the most of his life without carefully

and conscientiously striving to win the right kind of friends as he goes along.

Knowing how valuable Friendship is, we should be very careful in making friends. Real friends are those who have good character, superior ability and kindness of heart. Real friends can share all our sorrows and double all our joys. While making friends, we should take care to select those who have such fine qualities. Then we should treat our friends with courtesy, be careful not to interfere unreasonably with them, and not to ridicule their proceedings. We should forgive their failures and do our best to help them. In short, when we have established Friendship, we ought to cherish and treasure it by means of words and deeds. Only thus, can we develop real Friendship and keep the sacred lamp of Friendship burning all our life.

4. Benefits of Volunteering

In recent years, the volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people, especially among youngsters. According to a survey, in 2008, there were about 1,700,000 volunteers who offered service for Olympic Games. Actually, an increasing number of people become volunteers every year in China.

Volunteering is of tremendous benefits to both those in need and the society. Olympic Games are a good example. As is known to all, volunteers played an active role in Beijing Olympic Games. Without them, it would be a tough task to hold this un-precedent Olympic Games. Therefore, we can say that it was those volunteers who ensured the success of these games.

As college students, we should get actively involved in volunteering actions. By participating, we can learn how to work well in a team, how to improve our interpersonal skills and organizational ability. Undoubtedly, all of these are critical for our personal growth. So, we should take advantage of voluntary work to learn and to develop.

5. Should college students take part-time jobs?

Nowadays many college students are enthusiastic about taking part-time jobs. It's estimated that some of them spend over 50% of their after-school time on part-time jobs. In my opinion, taking part-time jobs has both advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, college students benefit a lot from taking part-time jobs. First, by doing part-time jobs, a student can learn how to be responsible. As an employee, a student has to go to work on time. Also, he has to learn how to do his work carefully and diligently if he does not want to lose the job. Second, a student will get to know the value of money through part-time jobs. Many students depend on their parents for money, but they do not know how hard their parents have worked to support their study. When a student tries to make money by himself, he will realize that “money doesn?t grow on trees.” Third, a part-time job enables students to learn how to work together with others. Working as a member of a team will build strong character in students, and the experiences will surely help them a great deal after their graduation and benefit them throughout their lives.

However, on the other hand, part-time work may distract the students' attention from their studies. Some students who have secured part-time jobs have already shown a decline in their studies.

Personally, I think taking part-time jobs is good for college students. As long as they can budget their time properly, and strike a balance between study and work, part-time jobs will offer them a great learning opportunity and enrich their life experiences.
