注意明确观点立场、论证有理有据、驳论体现complexities(课堂上讲的三种方法都可以用在此题中),用词和语法事项,取得理想的成绩应该还是很轻松的。

In your opinion, should communities have laws that ban building new fast-food restaurants?

范文

The recent 50 years have witnessed the increasingly fast developing society and the current life pace, which has exposed people with nearlya little time for food. Therefore, it is rather a prevalent scenario to see thef ast-food restaurants of all kinds mushrooming in its wake. Therefore, with its boom comes the health problem---obesity, for many people cannot resist the temptation to purchase the ready-made food containing high calories. However,it is rather irrational and unviable to make laws banning the new fast-foodrestaurants for the following reasons.

To begin with, as a free and independent entity incertain community, be it an international one or a local one, humans should begranted with the right to choose what they like freely, let alone their food. Itis the human that comprise the whole community, which decides the food type and dining manner. Where there is a policy, there will be a

counter-measurement getting around it: therefore, it is not a panacea to make laws to proscribe the establishment of new fast-food restaurants, for people will regard it as apolicy to limit their freedom in this aspect. As we all know, some people hustling-and-rustlingwithin certain communities, especially busy ones in some occupations, likebusiness, banking and teachers, do not have enough time to cook for dinners;even if they do have time for cooking, they will probably do it during the weekends or just choose to have a rest after a week’s work. For most of their workdays, they still need to rash to restaurant for food within the short break. Hence,it is not advisable to ban building the new fast-food restaurant.

Furthermore, fast-food restaurants, by definition, arefast and convenient by providing an alternative choice for food. It is amis conception that fast-food restaurants are to be blamed for leading too besity: on the contrary, it is the human instead of the fast-food restaurant that should bear the blame. What’s more, fast food is enormous in kind and type; therefore, not every fast food is necessarily high in calorie and otherelements leading to obesity. It is rather common that many international fast-food chain restaurants, such as KFC and MacDonald, have adjusted their development strategies in different districts to cater for the local flavor. In China, for instance, we are provided with several choices for breakfast and lunch, such as dumplings and noodles in these diners. Besides that, thesefast-food restaurants have adapted and improved their recipes according to the local taste and balanced nutrients. Hence, it is a rash conclusion to say that the existence of fast-food restaurants serves as the underlying reason for unhealthy lifestyle.

In addition, it is neither viable nor possible to bansuch kind of restaurants, for dining represents one of the most fundamental needs for living and survival. What’s more, they also contribute to the strong national economic growth as the tertiary industry, which can embody the characteristics and icon of a community, a region, even a country. In other words, it is the strong social basic needs and fast development demands that stimulate their boom.

Admittedly, it is the common concern and apprehension formost people to worry the safety and health of the fast food, especially when somefast-food restaurants are debunked with forced ripening chickens and illegal cooking oil; besides, people can hardly hold back their thirst and appetite forthe enticing food which contain high calorie in actuality, leading to some diseasesas obesity, diabetes and hypertension. However, this is not the fundamental reason to ban their development, for the governments are in the right positionto regulate the food market instead of banning them. It is advisable for thegovernments to make and implement some regulations to limit the maximum calorieand the health of the food materials. At the same time, the restaurant ownerscan also improve their food by developing new recipes that can combine the nutrient sand flavor perfectly; at last, people should become fully aware of the real meaningand significance of healthy life lie in movement and exercises with food onlyaccounting for a small part. Therefore, only with a strong body, balanced nutrientsand powerful mind can one lead a halcyon and fulfilled life.

All in all, fast-food restaurants are not the right subject to be blamed for obesity and unhealthy lifestyle; it is peoples’ awareness that matters. Therefore, governments and restaurants of this kind shall make concerted efforts to balance the interests of all parties concerned.

Next Year Marks the EU's 50th Anniversary of the Treaty A. After a period of introversion and stunned self-disbelief,continental European governments will recover their enthusiasm for pan-European institution-building in . Whether the European public will welcome a return to what voters in two countries had rejected so short a time before is another matter. B. There are several reasons for Europe’s recovering self-confidence. For years European economies had been lagging dismally behind America (to say nothing of Asia), but in the large continental economies had one of their best years for a decade, briefly outstripping America in terms of growth. Since politics often reacts to economic change with a lag,’s improvement in economic growth will have its impact in , though the recovery may be ebbing by then. C. The coming year also marks a particular point in a political cycle so regular that it almost seems to amount to a natural law. Every four or five years, European countries take a large stride towards further integration by signing a new treaty: the Maastricht treaty in 1992, the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1997, the Treaty of Nice in . And in they were supposed to ratify a European constitution, laying the ground for yet more integration—until the calm rhythm was rudely shattered by French and Dutch voters. But the political impetus to sign something every four or five years has only been interrupted, not immobilised, by this setback. D. In the European Union marks the 50th anniversary of another treaty—the Treaty of Rome, its founding charter. Government leaders have already agreed to celebrate it ceremoniously, restating their commitment to “ever closer union” and the basic ideals of European unity. By itself, and in normal circumstances, the EU’s 50th-birthday greeting to itself would be fairly meaningless, a routine expression of European good fellowship. But it does not take a Machiavelli to spot that once governments have signed the declaration (and it seems unlikely anyone would be so uncollegiate as to veto

Although we focus on the needs of exceptional children, we find ourselves describing their environment as well. While the leading actor on the stage captures our attention, we are aware of the importance of the supporting players and the scenery of the play itself. Both the family and the society in which exceptional children live are often the key to their growth and development. And it is in the public schools that we find the full expression of society's understanding —the knowledge, hopes, and fears that are passed on to the next generation. Education in any society is a mirror of that society. In that mirror we can see the strengths, the weaknesses, the hopes, the prejudices, and the central values of the culture itself. The great interest in exceptional children shown in public education over the past three decades indicates the strong feeling in our society that all citizens, whatever their special conditions, deserve the opportunity to fully develop their capabilities. "All men are created equal." We've heard it many times, but it still has important meaning for education in a democratic society. Although the phrase was used by this country's founders to denote equality before the law, it has also been interpreted to mean equality of opportunity. That concept implies educational opportunity for all children — the right of each child to receive help in learning to the limits of his or her capacity, whether that capacity be small or great. Recent court decisions have confirmed the right of all children — disabled or not — to an appropriate education, and have ordered that public schools take the necessary steps to provide that education. In response, schools are modifying their programs, adapting instruction to children who are exceptional, to those who cannot profit substantially from regular programs. 59. In paragrah 2, the author cites the example of the leading actor on the stage to show that ________. [A] the growth of exceptional children has much to do with their family and the society [B] exceptional children are more influenced by their families than normal children are [C] exceptional children are the key interest of the family and society [D] the needs of the society weigh much heavier than the needs of the exceptional children 60. The reason that the exceptional children receive so much concern in education is that ________. [A] they are expected to be leaders of the society [B] they might become a burden of the society [C] they should fully develop their potentials [D] disabled children deserve special consideration 61. This passage mainly deals with ________. [A] the differences of children in their learning capabilities [B] the definition of exceptional children in modern society [C] the special educational programs for exceptional children [D] the necessity of adapting education to exceptional children 62. From this passage we learn that the educational concern for exceptional children ________. [A] is now enjoying legal support [B] disagrees with the tradition of the country [C] was clearly stated by the country's founders [D] will exert great influence over court decisions 重点词汇: denote (v. Wisdom denotes the pursuing of the best and by the best means.“明智”指的是以最好的方法追求最好的结果。 难句解析: ①Exceptional children are different in some significant way from others of the same age. For these children to develop to their full adult potential, their education must be adapted to those differences. For these children to develop to their full adult potential是一个表示目的的状语,也可以看成是一个从主句their education must be adapted to those differences后面提前了的介词结构。 ②While the leading actor on the stage captures our attention, we are aware of the importance of the supporting players and the scenery of the play itself. ▲此句由一个while引导的让步状语从句the leading actor on the stage captures our attention和一个主句构成。 ③And it is in the public schools that we find the full expression of society's understanding — the knowledge, hopes, and fears that are passed on to the next generation.

Selling Digital Music without Copy-protection Makes Sense A. It was uncharacteristically low-key for the industry’s greatest showman. But the essay published this week by Steve Jobs, the boss of Apple,on his firm’s website under the unassuming title “Thoughts on Music” has nonetheless provoked a vigorous debate about the future of digital music, which Apple dominates with its iPod music-player and iTunes music-store. At issue is “digital rights management” (DRM)—the technology guarding downloaded music against theft. Since there is no common standard for DRM, it also has the side-effect that songs purchased for one type of music-player may not work on another. Apple’s DRM system, called FairPlay, is the most widespread. So it came as a surprise when Mr. Jobs called for DRM for digital music to be abolished. B. This is a change of tack for Apple. It has come under fire from European regulators who claim that its refusal to license FairPlay to other firms has “locked in” customers. Since music from the iTunes store cannot be played on non-iPod music-players (at least not without a lot of fiddling), any iTunes buyer will be deterred from switching to a device made by a rival firm, such as Sony or Microsoft. When French lawmakers drafted a bill last year compelling Apple to open up FairPlay to rivals, the company warned of “state-sponsored piracy”. Only DRM, it implied, could keep the pirates at bay. C. This week Mr. Jobs gave another explanation for his former defence of DRM: the record companies made him do it. They would make their music available to the iTunes store only if Apple agreed to protect it using DRM. They can still withdraw their catalogues if the DRM system is compromised. Apple cannot license FairPlay to others, says Mr Jobs, because it would depend on them to produce security fixes promptly. All DRM does is restrict consumer choice and provide a barrier to entry, says Mr Jobs; without it there would be far more stores and players, and far more innovation. So, he suggests, why not do away with DRM and sell music unprotected?“This is

英语真题阅读理解试题及名师解析(三) When a new movement in art attains a certain fashion, it is advisable to find out what its advocates are aiming at, for, however farfetched and unreasonable their principles may seem today, it is possible that in years to come they may be regarded as normal. With regard to Futurist poetry, however, the case is rather difficult, for whatever Futurist poetry may be―even admitting that the theory on which it is based may be right―it can hardly be classed as Literature. This, in brief, is what the Futurist says: for a century, past conditions of life have been conditionally speeding up, till now we live in a world of noise and violence and speed. Consequently, our feelings, thoughts and emotions have undergone a corresponding change. This speeding up of life, says the Futurist, requires a new form of expression. We must speed up our literature too, if we want to interpret modern stress. We must pour out a large stream of essential words, unhampered by stops, or qualifying adjectives, or finite verbs. Instead of describing sounds we must make up words that imitate them; we must use many sizes of type and different colored inks on the same page, and shorten or lengthen words at will. Certainly their descriptions of battles are confused. But it is a little upsetting to read in the explanatory notes that a certain line describes a fight between a Turkish and a Bulgarian officer on a bridge off which they both fall into the river—and then to find that the line consists of the noise of their falling and the weights of the officers: “Pluff! Pluff! A hundred and eighty-five kilograms.” This, though it fulfills the laws and requirements of Futurist poetry, can hardly be classed as Literature. All the same, no thinking man can refuse to accept their first proposition: that a great change in our emotional life calls for a change of expression. The whole question is really this: have we essentially changed? 19. This passage is mainly____. [A]a survey of new approaches to art [B]a review of Futurist poetry [C]about merits of the Futurist movement [D]about laws and requirements of literature 20. When a novel literary idea appears, people should try to_____. [A]determine its purposes [B]ignore its flaws [C]follow the new fashions [D]accept the principles 21. Futurists claim that we must____. [A]increase the production of literature [B]use poetry to relieve modern stress [C]develop new modes of expression [D]avoid using adjectives and verbs 22. The author believes that Futurist poetry is____. [A]based on reasonable principles [B]new and acceptable to ordinary people [C]indicative of basic change in human nature
