Today I'm going to talk about the umbrella. We all know that we put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But the umbrella was not invented as a protection against rain. It was first used as a shade against the sun. Nobody knows who first invented it. But the umbrella was used in very ancient times. When it first appeared in Egypt, it was used only by the rich as a symbol of their power. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella. During the middle ages, however, the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the 16th
century and later in France and in England. Gradually, most European countries began to use the umbrella. During all this time, umbrellas have not changed much in style, but they do become much lighter.
