PART IV READING COMPREHENSION (45 MINUTES, 30 POINTS)

Directions: In this part of the test, there are several passages for you to read. Read each passage carefully, and then do the questions that follow. Choose the best answer A,B,C, or D, and mark the corresponding letter on your Answer Sheet.

Passage One

In 1928, Alexander Calder, one of the most innovative modern sculptors, made "The Horse,"

a boxwood figure now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. About the same time, Edgar Alexander Mckillop, living in Balfour, North Carolina, made one of his four known works of folk art, "Hippoceros," combining the elements of a rhinoceros and a hippopotamus, now in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection. That a piece of modern art and a piece of folk art created contemporaneously could be so similar in both subject and treatment leads us to the conclusion that folk art should be considered within the same hierarchy of criteria used to judge modern art.Calder's horse, assembled from three carved parts, expresses the essential character of the animal in an abstract manner, with emphasis on the attitude of the legs and the extended neck and head. McKillop's carved wooden figure expresses the artist's similar ability to select and emphasize those elements that contribute most to his personal statement. "Hippoceros" has teeth resembling piano keys, glass taxidermists' eyes, and originally had rhinestones in its nostrils. The tongue is a leather boxing glove that is rigged to move in and out as the turntable of a phonograph in the animal's back revolves. A strange creature, it has a presence that attests to the artist's ability to combine materials, sound, and motion in a unified statement that becomes a uniquely powerful image.

51. What is the main subject of the passage?

A. A comparison of "The Horse" and "Hippoceros."

B. An explanation of how "Hippoceros" was made.

C. "Hippoceros" ... folk art.

D. "Hippoceros" ... modern art.

53. According to the passage, why has the author chosen to discuss these particular works?

A. Both artists' names are Alexander.

B. Both works were made at the same time.

C. Both works represent real animals.

D. Both works make use of sound and motion.

54. According to the passage, which of the following parts of a horse does Calder emphasize in his sculpture?

A. The mane and tail.

B. The eyes and nostrils.

C. The hooves and feet.

D. The head and neck.

55. Which part of "Hippoceros" moves?

A. Its legs.

B. Its teeth.

C. Its eyes.

D. Its tongue.

56. What is the author's opinion of "Hippoceros"?

A.He admires it because it makes a strong, well-realized personal statement.

B.He likes it even though it is inferior in design.

D. He dislikes it because it incorporates material not appropriate to art.

Passage Two

Stanley Fields, the man who wrote "Sad, Sad Cowboy," which won this year's Philip's Award as the best song of the year, might have had a very different career if his parents had had their way. In a private interview, Fields said, "When I was a kid, my father always told me I should put down my guitar and do my homework. He wanted me to go to college and become a teacher as he and his brother were." Fields explained that he made a great effort to please his father, but often the urge became too great and he would sneak off to a pasture behind his house and play his guitar and make up songs. "I made it to Stanton College," he laughed, "but I majored in accounting instead of teaching. And to pay my own way, I played the guitar and sang at a local nightclub." While Fields was still in his senior year, an executive of a record company came into the club as he was singing one of his own songs. The executive liked what he heard and signed the young man to a contract. Since graduating from Stanton College in 1973, Fields has devoted his full time to composing and singing. "My Heartache," a song he wrote while in college, reached number seventeen in the top twenty song hits of 1974 and in 1977 his song, "Rambling," was the theme song for the movie of the same name.

Passage Three

Baldness, the absence of hair on the head, has been divided into five main types by those who study this affliction of human beings. A general thinning of the hair is called partial baldness and an absence of hair in areas usually covered by hair is labeled area baldness. A thinning of the hair which occurs in persons after about fifty years of age is called senile baldness. In this form of partial baldness, the hairline tends to recede, and there is a gradual thinning of the hair over the whole head. Parts of the head, such as the top, may grow completely bald. Young people may experience what is called premature baldness. And when certain areas of the head become bald while hair over the rest of the scalp continues to grow at a normal rate, the condition is called pattern baldness. Despite all the research that has been done on the subject, the specific causes of baldness are still unknown. Experts believe that heredity, aging, hormone imbalance and infection have an effect on the loss of hair. The most widespread cause of baldness is heredity, but it affects female members of a family less than males. The women of a bald family are more apt to retain their hair than the men. The females, however, pass on an inherited tendency toward baldness to their male offspring. Besides the possible causes mentioned above, baldness may result from such infections and diseases as ringworm, dermatitis, typhoid fever and scarlet fever. This type of baldness is usually not permanent, however. Hygiene has been found to be an important factor in baldness. An improper cleaning of the scalp may accelerate baldness, while the stimulation from cleansing andbrushing helps to delay it.

Passage Four

V oluntary Service Overseas (VSO) is a registered charity dedicated to assisting development in the world's poor countries. It is an independent non-sectarian organization. VSO is a direct response to an urgent need. Each year about 450 volunteers are sent to work on projects in 36 developing countries. Each volunteer goes overseas in response to a specific appeal from a developing country. Over the past 23 years more than 20,000 volunteers have worked abroad with VSO. Together they have contributed over 30,000 man-years to development. But VSO volunteers gain as well as give. They gain responsibility, experience and a personal viewpoint on development. On their return they can make an effective contribution to the development debate. Above all, VSO is aid that the Third World needs. For this reason the Third World countries themselves pay almost half the cost of each VSO volunteer. When VSO was established over 20 years ago, the first volunteers were school-leavers. However, increasingly the demand was for skilled and professional people. Today, all VSO volunteers are skilled and/or qualified people--teachers and doctors, mechanics and electricians, accountants and civil engineers. Why do they volunteer? To make a personal contribution, to take on extra responsibility, to gain overseas work experience, to work within a community--often for all these reasons. The task of VSO is to match these specialists with particular vacancies, notified to them by overseas countries. Then, having made the match, they prepare the volunteer to work for two years in a very different environment.

Passage Five

One day Mr. Kerry was walking along the Strand in London, killing time, when his eye was caught by an enormous picture displayed upon the wall of a house. It represented a human figure covered with long, dark hair, with huge nails upon his hands and a most fearful expression. On coming nearer, he heard a man call out "Walk in, ladies and gentlemen, the most wonderful curiosity ever exhibited--only five pence--the wild man from Africa--he eats raw food, and many other pleasing and surprising performances.' Mr. Kerry paid his money and was admitted. At first the crowd prevented his seeing anything, for the place was full to suffocation, and the noise awful. At last, Mr. Kerry obtained, by dint of squeezing and pushing, a place in the front, when to his horror, he saw a figure that was far worse than the portrait outside. It was a man, nearly naked, covered with long, shaggy hair, that grew even over his nose and cheekbones. He sprang about, sometimes on his feet, sometimes on all-fours, but always uttering the most fearful yells, and glaring upon the crowd in a manner that was really dangerous. Mr. Kerry did not feel exactly happy at the whole proceeding, and began heartily to wish himself outside. Suddenly, the savage gave a more frantic scream than before and seized a morsel of raw beef which a keeper extended to him on a long fork. This he tore to pieces eagerly, and devoured in the most voracious manner, amid great clapping of hands and other evidence of satisfaction from the audience. 'I'll go now', thought Mr. Kerry, 'for who knows whether, in his hungry moods, he might not fancy finishing his dinner with me.' Just at this instant, some sounds struck his ear that surprised him. He listened more attentively and, to his amazement, found that amid the most fearful cries and wild yells, the savage was talking Irish. Now, Mr Kerry had never heard of an African Irishman so he listened very closely, and, by degrees, not only the words were known to him, but the very voice was familiar, so turning to the savage, he addressed him in Irish, at the same time fixing him with a severe look. 'Who are you?' said Mr Kerry. 'Billy McCabe, sir.' 'And what do you mean by playing your tricks here, instead of earning your living like an honest man?' 'Well,' said Billy, 'I'm earning the rent to pay you. One must do many strange things to pay the kind of rent you charge.' 71. Mr. Kerry was walking along the Strand because

A. he had nothing else to do.

B. he was late for an appointment.

C. he was looking for something to do.

D. he was reluctant to go home.

Passage Six

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, the intriguing story was reported of a tramp who, apparently through no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Presumably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents. However they may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop re-opened, he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor and philosophic temperament--as indeed vagrants very commonly are. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He submitted, cheerfully enough, to being taken away by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the coverage the story received in the newspapers and on television. Perhaps the judge had had a good Christmas too.

76. The tramp was locked in the store

A. for his mistakes.

B. due to a misunderstanding.

77. The staff were 'dead beat' means they were

79. When the tramp was arrested, he

A. laughed at the police.

B. looked forward to going to prison.

C. took his bottles with him.

D. didn't make any fuss.

80. Why didn't the judge award compensation to the chain store?

A. The tramp had stolen nothing of value.

B. The store had profited by the incident.

C. The tramp deserved a happy Christmas.

D. The store was responsible for what happened.

And the launching of the first communications satellite in 1962 was rapidly followed by other satellites of increasing sophistication. Nationally, the insistent demand for telecommunications facilities has led to the introduction of improved trunk (干线) systems and electronic exchanges, as well as new services--data transmission, closed circuit television, educational television, and so on.

What does the man imply? What does the woman’s answer suggest? What does the woman say about..(共出现32次) 2. What can we learn/know about the man? What do we know from the woman’s reply? What can be inferred about…(共出现37次) 3. What does the man promise to do? How does the man feel about… 选项中可能出现can’t, not be able to, too….to, have to等词或词组. 3.

a.表示文章顺序与层次的句子,一般由first, second, in the end, in addition, furthermore, finally引导. b.表示意思转折的句子,一般由but, however, on the contrary, instead, unfortunately, however, yet, although, nevertheless等词引导 c.表示因果关系的句子,一般由because, since, for, thus, as a result等引导 2.

常见表因果的方式:词语方面有because, why, the reason, for, so, since, as a result等。 真题再现 例1:(并列) They weren't looking for cured meats, organic produce or beautiful presentation; they were looking for whatever they could get their hands on, and this prioritisation of quantity over quality prevailed for decades, meaning a generation was brought up with food that couldn't compete with neighbouring France, Italy, Belgium or Spain.(2011.6,cet 4) 3. Why couldn't Britain compete with some of its neighbouring countries in terms of food in the post-war decades? A. Its food lacked variety. B. Its people cared more for quantity. C. It was short of well-trained chefs. D. It didn't have flavourful food ingredients. B选项是对原文中“prioritisation of quantity over quality”的同意转述。 例2:(因果) American tourists, however, shouldn’t expect any relief soon. The dollar lost strength the way many marriages break up- slowly, and then all at once. And
