AP Chemistry 2010-2011 - Ms. Thomas-Shapiro

Welcome to AP Chemistry! Even as this year is drawing to a close, I am looking forward to the start of our AP class in the fall. It should be a demanding and rigorous, yet exciting and rewarding year. In order to have a successful year, you need to start preparing now. The better organized you are now, the better your start in the fall. It is very likely that AP Chemistry will take more time than any other single class you are taking. Much of the learning is independent and it is the student's responsibility to complete assignments and to seek assistance when the material is confusing. The text is an excellent resource, but it must be read thoroughly to be of use. It is expected that you will complete all assignments on time, and be an active class participant.

1) Before the end of this school year, please send me an email address where you can be contacted

throughout the summer. However, I do expect you to check your First Class email account regularly and will use that address exclusively once the school year begins.

2) Find all of the labs you did this year and organize them into a notebook. Set up a table of contents

with the name of each lab and put them in chronological order. Bring this notebook to class on the

first day of school. (If you’d like you can do this before the end of this year and store it in my

classroom over the summer.)

3) Order your textbook (and lab notebook) at the beginning of the summer (or now!) to make sure you

have no trouble acquiring the book in time to complete the summer assignment. You will need at least two weeks (at a semi-leisurely pace), maybe more, to complete the work with adequate thought. If

you are not an Honors Chemistry student, you will have an additional assignment that will be due on July 30. This must be completed on time for you to be considered for enrollment in the fall.

You can order your book and lab notebook from Conn College's bookstore; however, you may find a better price by going directly to the publisher or by searching for a used copy (of the text only). The textbook publisher’s website is https://www.360docs.net/doc/8e12782958.html,. You can go to their online store to search for the textbook using the ISBN number to find the correct book. For used books you might check

either https://www.360docs.net/doc/8e12782958.html, or https://www.360docs.net/doc/8e12782958.html,. You simply need to make certain that the

ISBN number matches exactly.

4) Summer Assignment - For your summer work, you must read the first four chapters in the

chemistry text and complete all of the red problems at the end of each chapter. This is a large number of problems, but it should give you a good idea of what you know and what you need to spend more time working on before the start of the school year. The answers to these questions are in the back of the book, so you need to make sure that the answers you give me demonstrate that you have worked through the problems and not just that you have copied the answers. Check your answers to make

sure you are on the right track.

All problems are due on the first day of the class. Because this is a college level course, it is expected that you will be able to complete assignments without outside intervention, that you will take responsibility for your own learning, and that you will self-advocate when you experience difficulty.

There is no acceptable excuse for not completing the summer assignment and you will be asked to withdraw from the class if this assignment is not completed.

It would also be to your advantage to start memorizing the elements (name and symbol) through element 92-Uranium, as well as the polyatomic ions listed in the COMMON IONS chart in the back of your textbook. You will also be responsible for knowing the solubility rules. This is especially important and tends to be neglected.

You are welcome to contact me at any time over the summer if you have questions or are having difficulty.
