Randy Kraus was paralyzed(瘫痪的). His left side was useless and he felt he could do nothing. He'd been a police officer before, and he was strong and able.

His trouble started with Parkinson's disease, but it didn't end there. In July, 2002, the 60-year-old Kraus went into the hospital for an operation on his brain to control the shaking. But during the operation, he had a stroke(中风). He was paralyzed. The do ctor said, “You may never walk again and you might not even

Kraus found that he couldn't lift a fork or take a drink by himself. Physical treatment was so painful and slow. What did he have to live for? So Kraus held the gun against his head. Feeling the cold metal on his skin, he began to consider the pain he would cause for his wife, daughters and grandchildren. He didn't pull the trigger(扳机).

Andrew Garud, his exercise physiologist(生理学家), told him, “You are where you are. The pace would be slow; the pain would be real. But as long as you are alive, you have the ability to get better. ”

After three months of working with Garud, Kraus wanted to see if he could stand. He could. Then he took three steps, sat down and cried like a baby.

One step, as they say, led to another. Next he managed a short walk along the edge of a boxing ring(拳击台)in the health club. It was the hardest fight in Kraus' life. People at the gym cheered him on. Stephen Hawking, the most famous theoretical physicist after Albert Einstein, author of A Brief History of Time, was to attend the opening ceremony of a mathematics institute at Zhejiang University.

Stephen Hawking was born on 8 January, 1942 in Oxford, England. When he was eight, his family moved to St Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At the age of eleven Stephen went to St Albans School, and then went on to Oxford University, his father's old college. Stephen wanted to do Mathematics, although his father would have preferred Medicine. Mathematics was not available at Oxford University, so he did Physics instead. After three years and not very much work he was awarded a first-class degree in Natural Science.

He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Stephen Hawking has been working on the basic laws that govern the universe. He is particularly interested in unifying the General Relativity Theory and Quantum Theory to study black hole.

A great man of science sitting in the wheelchair, Stephen Hawking has suffered from a serious disease for decades. In 1963, he caught a disease that couldn't be cured then. Up to 1974, he was able to feed himself, and a private nurse went to his house for an hour or two in the morning and evening. In 1985, he caught pneumonia(肺炎)and had an operation. After the operation, he lost his ability to speak. For a time, the only way he could communicate was to spell out words letter by letter, by raising his eyebrows when someone pointed to the right letter on a spelling card.

A 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo (柔道)despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo teacher. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the

master had taught him only one move.

“ Master,” the boy finally said, “shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”

“ This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the teacher replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first tournament.

Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the teacher appeared.

“ No,” the teacher insisted, “Let him continue.”

Soon after the match continued, his opponent made a mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and the teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy got up the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

“ Teacher, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

The teacher answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

书面表达

I am Li Ming of Senior Three, Guangming Middle School. I am writing to tell you about some symptoms of anxiety among us students before exams.

Most of us feel nervous whenever we’re taking an important exam. Some will feel dizzy or tired, some will suffer from lack of sleep, and some will lose their appetite. In fact, all these symptoms have terrible effects on our exams and we are all eager to get rid of them.

First of all, in my opinion, it’s important for us to have a fight attitude towards exams. They are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our studies, so there is no need to worry too much about the results. Study hard every day and make careful plans for every exam. In this way we can avoid suffering from the pressure of exams. Besides, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, during the period of exams, we should not stay up too late. We can also try a warm bath or a cup of warm milk before going to bed. They might help us to have a sound sleep. (We’d better go out for a walk or do some outdoor exercises before and during an exam so that we can keep ourselves relaxed and then concentrate ourselves on exams.)

人教版高中英语选修6各单元课文原文

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.
